We remember our past and are open to our future: living and sharing the Gospel with enthusiasm, joy and celebration under the guidance and protection of Mary, Our Lady of Perpetual Help.” We begin the Lenten Season and for forty days we are invited to reflect on the salvation God has provided us through the sufferings and death of Jesus Christ on the Cross. Generally, we describe this season penitential. It is this time when, in our reflection, we look back and seek to be reconciled to God and with one another and making amends for our commissions and omissions. In these six succeeding weeks (including Palm Sunday), I will be sharing with you by installment some thoughts I borrowed from Fr. Dwight Longenecker, an American Catholic priest, preacher, author, who is based in England. He talks about really helpful guidelines to remember when we struggle to amend our lives by falling into the same sin. Here are the first two things he has to say: 1. “Perfection is the work of a lifetime. Did you think you were going to become a saint overnight? This is a problem with us Americans. We like the instant fix, the painless solution and the easy way out. Pope St. John Paul II said, “Chastity is the work of a lifetime”. Nothing great comes ever easily. Becoming a saint is like becoming an Olympic athlete or a concert pianist. It does not happen quickly.” 2. “Don’t be so hard on yourself. Yes, by all means set a high standard. Don’t be too easy on yourself, but also don’t be too tough on yourself. If you continue trying, then you are doing the right thing. It’s an old cliché, but it’s true: “It does not matter how often you fall. It matters how often you get up.” As long as you are still on the path and getting up it does not matter that much if you stumble.” Perseverance is key to this discipline. God demands conversion and tells us to be quick. But also He is patient with us. What it means is that we make a decision to do the right and choose God. That does not mean immediate holiness. That choice to be straight does not go without being tested. Thus it is going to be a constant battle between the good and the evil. Our consolation is this: God remains by our side helping us get over these trials. "No seas tan duro contigo mismo. A Reflection on Depression Father Raymond P. Carey, Ph.D. Tuesday, March 24 7:00 PM—Gathering Space Depression is a common occurrence today, and one that can take away one’s joy and sense of well-being.
