CONFESSIONS SATURDAYS TUESDAYS 8:30 am to 10:00 am 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm W elcome to the season of Lent! This holy time of grace is a sacred pilgrimage which serves as the annual “retreat” of the Church’s liturgical year, expressed ritually by the worshiping community, and in the personal resolve that each of us shows to enhance the quality of our lives. During this special time, we are invited to leave behind the comforts of our familiar world and set out to experience life with mind and heart renewed in Christ. We sacrifice in order to love more deeply. We detach ourselves from the clutter and distractions which keep us from God. Through penance and recommitment to the Lord, we seek to enliven our faith convictions, and more clearly authenticate our Christian discipleship. This great seasonal pilgrimage of faith, which spans forty days, actually has ancient roots. For forty days, Noah and his ark drifted upon the flood waters as God purged the earth of its sins. Often we, too, drift through the waters of time unaware of how selfishness has consumed us. Can we endeavor to enter into the purgation of ours sins a little bit more this season? Let’s allow God to change us this Lent. For forty days, Moses conversed with God alone in order to receive the Commandments. Can we pray and speak to the Lord from the heart a little bit more during this holy time of introspection, to commune with Him more, so as to develop a more profound relationship and identification with Him? If we don’t know how to talk with him, relate with him, and to live for him right now while on earth, how will we ever know how to do so, one day, in eternity? Let’s allow God to speak to us and gift us with his love this Lent. For forty days the people of Nineveh repented through self-denial and thereby won God’s mercy. In the light of eternity, can we, too, offer penitential practices, religious gestures which enliven our spiritual lives, even make personal changes and adjustments, which demonstrate our desire to be made new this Lent? Can we strengthen our resolve to put God first for a change? Let’s recommitment to place ourselves under the mantle of our Lord’s merciful glance this Lent. For forty days, Jesus prayed in the desert (as this weekend’s Gospel describes) in order to give himself over completely to the work of God’s Kingdom. Now for forty days (actually slightly more when the Sundays of Lent are counted), the Christian community assumes with greater intensity the disciplines of fasting, almsgiving, and prayer to help us walk in the way of the faith and to better understand the sacrifice of Jesus’ Cross as a gift of perfect love. Can we pray a little bit more this Lent? The fruits of prayer are peace, harmony, simplicity, humility, acceptance, inner calm, and tranquility of spirit. These dispositions make us docile to the Lord, and bring us into greater solidarity with the cause of Christ and with one another. Let’s give ourselves over completely to the will of God this Lent. Yes. Lent is our annual church “retreat,” a spiritual pause, a stepping back, a pushing of the rest button in our spiritual lives. May we sacrifice a little bit more in order to love more deeply, and detach ourselves from the clutter and distractions which keep us from God. a la temporada de Cuaresma! 2711 Indian Mound Trail Coral Gables, Florida 33134 Phone: (305) 446-9950 www.cotlf.org Mrs. Irma Aguilar Ext. 300 Receptionist Data Processing Coordinator Mrs. Maria Elena Chialastri Ext. 306 Office Manager Administrative Assistant to the Pastor Mr. Luis Cuza Associate Director of Liturgical Music Mr. Juan Del Sol Ext. 311 Wedding Coordinator Dr. Dawn Fontana Ext. 305 Director of Liturgical Music Ms. Cecilia Miyar Ext. 310 Administrative Assistant to the DRE Parish Coordinator of Ministries Mr. Jorge Perez Congratulations to our Newly Baptized: Sebastian Francis Quesada, Elena Lucia Saiz, Matteo Daniel Delbo Congratulations and God’s Blessings to those Joined in Holy Matrimony: Carson Zerpa & Jocquelyn Llorente Gaston Legorburo & Michelle Bermudez Rest in Peace. During the penitential season of Lent, Catholics around the world embrace gestures of spiritual solidarity, which speak of penance, sacrifice, and a greater alignment of life toward godly virtue. Among these is the age old practice of abstinence from meat products during all Fridays of the Lenten season. Also to note is that Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are universal days of fasting for all between the ages of 18 and 59. Fasting is the simplification (or diminishment) of food intake, as a way to lift our minds to the abundance of gifts that we always receive from God, and to grow in solidarity with the poor. The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart. — Romanos 10:8 T L he devil tempted Jesus by quoting scripture, as today’s Gospel reminds us. Try a self-serving miracle. Try selling out. Try dazzling the audience; people are gullible, after all. Try all these easy ways. The tempter tries to urge Jesus onto the slippery slope, attempts the old soft-soap, the snake-oil solutions that are always readily at hand. The devil knows better, but is powerless to do better, much less be better. The devil is evil personified, who senses in Jesus the stronger, truly attractive presence of holiness. Evil is exposed and engaged, we are reminded in this Sunday’s Gospel. Evil knows the jig is up. The undoing of lies begins with Jesus, who takes up the work of soul-healing and world-healing. This Lent, the Church invites us to enter into this renewing, re-creative work and be made whole again. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.
