Spiritual gifts are God’s gift of love to the Church through uniquely proportioned blessing to each individual member of the faith community. Each gift is unique yet integral to the good of the whole Catholic Church. St. Paul talked about these gifts in his letter to the Corinthians. He told the faithful of Corinth that “Some people God has designated in the church to be, first, apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers; then mighty deeds; then gifts of healing, assistance, administration and varieties of tongues.” The first three gifts are specific and distinguished. The latter are general. The latter gifts are interpreted in various ways throughout time. In doing so, many ministries were developed in the church. Among the professed religious and ordained priests and deacons, ministries like teaching, caring for the sick, helping the poor, consoling the grieving to name a few. The lay faithful have also joined in ministries like care for the priests and religious, marriage and family counseling, liturgical ministers, vocation promoters and the like. What spiritual gift do you have? Haven’t discovered it yet? You can start yourself the question: What am I good at and how will this gift help my church? o0o Faith, Hope and Love. The greatest of these is love. St. Paul tells us that our spiritual gifts should be used in the way of love. I use to hear my mom that principle and I believed in it. One time, I was assigned to cook jackfruit in coconut milk. I was sure I strictly followed the procedures. Unfortunately, my mom was not happy. I explained to her that I cooked the vegetable the way she does. So what went wrong? She’s got no secret ingredient. But as always my vegetable does not measure up to her cooked vegetable. One day, she was cooking the same recipe of jackfruit in coconut milk. I observed her well. I was observing her closely to see what I might have missed in cooking it. I did not see any difference. Tired of trying to discover what I did not do quite well; my mother broke her secret. She told me that tasty meal is cooked with love. Surely a mother knows that. o0o Year of Mercy. January is Feed the Hungry. Check out the 40 Cans for Lent spearheaded by the Knights of Columbus and with the help of our youth. Beginning February 10, we will be collecting your donation of canned goods to benefit the poor. Carisma. Yo no vi nada diferente. 5th Sunday Rosary To help bring families together in a spiritual activity and promote devotion to Mary, the Albany Knights of Columbus are pleased to announce a new church activity, the 5th Sunday Rosary Program. Knights, their families and other parishioners are encouraged to pray the rosary as a corporate body every time a 5th Sunday occurs during in a month. The Knights will lead a decade of the Rosary before each mass THIS weekend. Father Leonard’s Car Repair A parishioner graciously donated a Honda Civic to the parish to be used by Fr. Leonard in his Ministry to the parish community. Unfortunately, we’ve discovered the car needs a repair to make it as safe as possible for Fr. Leonard to drive. The cost of the repair will be approximately $3,000. We are asking for donations to help offset the cost so if you are in a position to help us out we would be so greatly appreciative. Donations may be made payable to St. Mary’s by check or by cash, noting on the check memo line or on the envelope “Fr. Leonard’s Car Repair”. We will also take EFT and credit card donations through WeShare or by calling the parish office and speaking to Joni Siewell, our Business Manager. If you are not in a position to help at this time, please keep us in your prayers. Thank you so very much!
