A Letter from Our Pastor
The Forgotten Liturgy
Every time we attend Mass, we
participate in liturgy. Liturgia is a
Greek word which implies
"work", or specifically the "work
of the people". It is easy to visualize this work as
being encompassed and defined by Sunday Mass.
However, liturgy goes far beyond the action of the
weekly Eucharist.
In fact, there is a very important liturgy which is
often forgotten. It is the Liturgy of the Hours. Prior
to the Second Vatican Council, the Liturgy of the
Hours was in the hands of priests. The laity seemed
to know vaguely that priests prayed something
called the "Daily Office". But, since it was in Latin, it
didn't really apply to most people. In fact, this is
true. Priests and Religious prayed the Daily Office
or the Liturgy of the Hours. This is a practice which
found its origins among the Benedictine Order.
Monks of that tradition pray the "hours" of the day,
blessing the parts of the day which God gives. They
gather seven times a day (even in the middle of the
night) to pray together and fulfill the ancient
Benedictine charism of "Work and Pray". Eventually
this practice was adopted by other religious orders
and secular priests. Priests make a promise to pray
the Liturgy of the Hours diligently and regularly on
behalf of the people and the world. It is consoling to
know that we are always being prayed for!
After the Second Vatican Council, the practice of
the Liturgy of the Hours became more common
among the laity of the church. Many Catholics pray
the Hours daily as a part of their own prayer life
and spiritual path. In this, the Western or Latin
Church is connecting with its Eastern counterparts
who have always maintained a universal praying
of the Liturgy of the Hours. Books of Christian
Prayer (common term for the Liturgy of the Hours)
are readily available and recommended for the
faithful. As the Liturgy of the Hours is based on
the Psalms, it opens up this beautiful book of the
Bible to the faithful. The Psalms speak to our
emotions and deepest feelings and longings, and
are a great benefit to personal prayer. You may
consider adopting the Liturgy of the Hours to your
daily prayer in the coming year.

“LO OLVIDADO 'LITURGIA’ "
Cada vez que vamos a misa, participamos en la liturgia. "Liturgia" es una palabra griega que
significa "trabajo", o específicamente el "trabajo de la gente." Es fácil visualizar este trabajo al ser
rodeada y definida por la misa del domingo. Sin embargo, la liturgia va mucho más allá de la acción de la
Eucaristía semanal.
De hecho, existe una liturgia muy importante que a menudo se olvida. Es la Liturgia de las Horas. Antes
del Concilio Vaticano II, la Liturgia de las Horas se encontraba en manos de los sacerdotes. Los laicos
parecían saber vagamente que los sacerdotes oraban algo que se llama la "El Oficio diario". Pero, ya que
estaba en Latín en realidad no se aplicaba a la mayoría de la gente. De hecho, esto es cierto. Sacerdotes y
religiosos rezaban El Oficio Diario o la Liturgia de las Horas. Esta es una práctica que encuentra sus
orígenes en la Orden Benedictina. Monjes de esa tradición rezan las "horas" del día, bendiciendo las

ENCUENTRO MATRIMONIAL MUNDIAL
Piensa en lo cansado, desanimado y frustrado que los apóstoles deben haber estado en la lectura del Evangelio
de hoy. Entonces Jesús aparece y les dice que lo intenten una vez más. Porque estaban dispuestos y
obediente, Jesús los bendijo abundantemente. Funciona de la misma manera en nuestras vidas hoy en día; si
confiamos en Jesús y lo que Él nos dice que hagamos, vamos a recibir Sus abundantes bendiciones! Permite
que la gracia de Dios fortalezca y renueve, y reaviva su relación matrimonial. Los próximos fines de semana

Desde su creación en 1965, la Colecta Anual del Arzobispo ha
