Jason XV completes broadcast on BCI
Today, February 6, JASON XV: Rainforests on
the Crossroads completes broadcasting on Barro
Colorado Island. On Wednesday, February 4,
STRI director Ira Rubinoff visited with the
JASON XV broadcasting crew, JASON's
executive director, Tim Armour, STRI's JASON
liaison, Beth King, scientists involved in the
broadcast, and the second group of JASON
Argonauts on BCI. The broadcast crew thanked
Rubinoff for the use of the STRI facilities on
BCI, the cooperation of our researchers, and
general logistics.
The JASON Project, founded by Bob Ballard
to stimulate interest in science and math among
4th-9th grade students, received tremendous
support from STRI staff and visiting scientists
for their fifteen expedition. Georgina de Alba
and Cristian Samper gave the initial go ahead to
the project. Beth King, STRI's science
interpreter, worked with JASON's Katie James
and Ilana Schoenfeld to develop the JASON
written curriculum and with JASON's
production company in Seattle, Media Arts, to
coordinate video productions in 2003. Since
then, Beth became STRI’s counterpart with the
JASON Project, dedicating every waking hour to
make JASON XV possible.
The live broadcast (Jan 26-Feb 6, 2004)
starred Meg Lowman, Mike Kaspari, Compton
Tucker, Stephanie Bohlman and Randy Morgan
working with 24 student Argonauts from the
US, Panama and Mexico. The curriculum and
broadcast also featured research and
commentary by: Roland Kays, Ricardo Moreno
and the ARTS group; Elisabeth Kalko, Christa
Weise, Sabine Sphen and the bat research
group; Bob Stallard and the ESP group; Jackie
and Greg Willis, Mark Wishnie and Prorena,
Stanley Heckadon, Allen Herre and the cacao
endophyte research group, Lissy Coley and the
ICBG group; Arturo Lindsay.
STRI's Nelida Gomez worked with Lupita
Salmon and JASON trainers to coordinate
teacher training efforts with Panama's
Education Ministry (MEDUC) and Secretariat
for Training in Science and Technology
(SENACYT). Twenty local teachers trained 200
additional teachers in the use of this hand's on
science curriculum. MEDUC approved the
JASON curriculum and Stanley Heckadon's
text, Puente Biologico as part of the national
curriculum. Meylin Hernandez helped to
coordinate activities with JASON's Elsie Rivard

Culminan las transmisiones de JASON XV en BCI
Hoy, 6 de febrero, JASON XV: Bosques tropicales
en la encrucijada completa sus transmisiones en
Barro Colorado. El miércoles 4 de febrero, el director de STRI Ira Rubinoff visitó al personal de transmisión de JASON XV, el director ejecutivo de
JASON Tim Armour, Beth King, enlace entre STRI
y JASON, los científicos que estaban participando
en las transmisiones y el segundo grupo de Argonautas en BCI. El equipo de transmisión agradeció

La Oficina de Seguridad de STRI coordinó con los
guardias de AKASAKA para la barcaza de la ACP.

La Oficina del Director y la Oficina de Asuntos
Externos ofrecieron apoyo logístico invalorable
