Les recordamos que el día de fin del ciclo
Sabatino (día del examen final) el horario de
clase permanece sin variación.
Es importante la asistencia de los alumnos
hasta el término del horario de clase, puesto
que es la única oportunidad para revisar el
examen final, obtener el resultado de su nota
de trabajo en clase y recibir información de su
desempeño por parte del profesor del curso.
En la primera Ceremonia de Entrega de Certificados Internacionales del año,
el BRITÁNICO otorgó diez becas al Reino Unido. En esta oportunidad, Cynthia
López nos brinda su testimonio antes de viajar.

dreams, but now, thanks to the
BRITÁNICO they are all coming true.
I joined because I knew English was
going to help me, but I did not
know it was going to be like this.
It was weird to find myself eager
to go to class every day; it felt like a time to have fun, not just studying,
challenging my friends to see who had the most creative answers.
I have had a fantastic time over the past two years, and I am thankful. I met
great people who taught me a lot and helped me improve my English skills.
They were not just my classmates and teachers, they became my friends.

Fernando suele llegar e inmediatamente carga los equipos en
su auto y ya ronda por mi sitio para salir cuanto antes. Sin
embargo, salir antes de las 5 es casi imposible… siempre se
presenta algo de último minuto.
Hoy presentamos Shhh… en el auditorio de Surco, y es la
última fecha. César Chirinos, el mimo, llega tras nuestros
pasos, acomoda su escenografía; es tan detallista… cada
elemento tiene ubicación y posición exactas. Aprovecho para
entender un poco más de su arte y lo lleno de preguntas que
responde con una cálida sonrisa. Mientras tanto, Fernando
instala los equipos, la consola de luces y sonido, los parlantes,
los cables de audio y cada uno de sus interminables artefactos
que reciben el trato de “mejores amigos”. Yo voy separando
los folletos y volantes que repartiremos al público, arreglando
las sillas y revisando que todo esté en su lugar; siempre es
bueno dar una mirada antes de iniciar la presentación.
Sin darnos cuenta, ya es tiempo de empezar. Salgo para ver
cómo vamos con el público y afortunadamente tenemos una
larga cola y ya están impacientes porque se inicie la función.
Abrimos puertas, tenemos caras conocidas… “nuestros
caseritos”, algún alumno que se lamenta porque “justo
tengo clases” y últimamente mucha gente joven. Iniciamos
la función y, como siempre, “el que llega tarde”… ¡ni modo!
El público se conecta de inmediato con César, ríe, se emociona,
se entristece; pasa por toda una gama de sentimientos. Es la
quinta vez que veo Shhh…, y cada vez me gusta más, en
cada función siento que logra sacar un sentimiento diferente.
Me encanta ver cómo reacciona el público, cómo disfruta
de la presentación, cómo se desconecta por 50 minutos del
mundo y se sumerge en un poquito de ilusión. Acaba nuestra
función, el público aplaude y se pone de pie.
Algunos fans esperan a César a su salida. Fernando y yo
guardamos los equipos para dejarlos en “casita”, nuestro
centro cultural.

del Libro – LIMA 2009
Del 23 de julio al 5 de agosto, el BRITÁNICO estará
presente en la 14..a Feria Internacional del Libro de
Lima, que se realizará en la explanada del Museo de
la Nación, en San Borja. ¡¡Los esperamos!!

El curso está dirigido a profesores que deseen obtener conocimientos base sobre la enseñanza de
inglés como lengua extranjera y/o actualizar sus conocimientos sobre las últimas tendencias en el
mundo de la ELT. Al mismo tiempo, el curso los preparará en caso de que quieran rendir el examen
internacional TKT de la Universidad de Cambridge. Inicio de clases: sábado 29 de agosto.

Actividades en Camacho

Como es sabido, en el sistema Sabatino, el examen final se
administra en la última sesión, lo cual permite también que,
ese mismo día, nuestros alumnos puedan beneficiarse de la
oportunidad de revisar su examen, recibir sus calificaciones e
incluso algún comentario o consejo del profesor respecto a
su proceso de aprendizaje; y es precisamente en esa ventaja
donde radica la importancia de aprovechar toda la sesión
sabatina… hasta el final.
En algunos casos, como los pequeños de Kids 10, a cargo de
la profesora Sonia Santos, además de usar sus habilidades
lingüísticas, pusieron en práctica las artísticas. En la foto, los
vemos posando junto a su Ocean diorama hecho en clase.

TKT Partially On-line
Julio • Agosto 09
El curso está dirigido a profesores de inglés, de nivel secundaria, con un gran dominio de
inglés. Durante las sesiones, los participantes recibirán ideas prácticas en las áreas de desarrollo
de habilidades en el idioma, manejo de clase, plan de lección, enseñanza de gramática para
comunicarse, actividades comunicativas en clase, uso de canciones, juegos y videos, entre otros. Las
clases se inician el sábado 15 de agosto.
Otros grupos se deleitaron con algunos extractos
de películas (¡completamente en inglés!), y después
representaron gráficamente lo que más les gustó.
Felicitaciones a todos nuestros docentes que hicieron del
último día de clases sabatinas un fin de fiesta beneficioso
para nuestros alumnos.
Nuestro agradecimiento también a los padres de familia por
su colaboración al promover entre sus niños la importancia
de estas sesiones.

No hay mejor forma de aprender el idioma inglés que…
¡usándolo! Eso nos lo demuestra, en plena acción, un grupo
de alumnos del ciclo K01 de nuestro sistema Sabatino,
guiados por la profesora Ana María Salcedo.
Advanced 6 - The Finale!

Last June 26th, my students finished their advanced course.
They were really excited but at the same time a little sad
because of the end of their studies. They enjoyed their classes
and took advantage of the material used in class (Complete
FCE pack, Practice Tests, among others) since they helped
them a lot to improve their Listening, Reading, Speaking and
Writing skills. I can say that they were really involved and that
they are ready to deal with the international examination
(FCE).
They were also nervous on that day since they had to perform
in a play they had prepared as a special farewell; it was called
The Haunted House. They showed not only their English but
also their acting skills and the students who attended this
special presentation enjoyed it a lot. It was a combination of
horror and comedy, so it was a fun time for everybody.
I would also like to mention their constant interest in the
course which is the key to success and I am sure they will
be able to obtain this prestigious certificate awarded by
Cambridge University.

¿Cómo tener más oportunidades en la vida?

Soy Junior Valdez, alumno de Clientes Externos del BRITÁNICO. Estudié Administración
de Empresas en la Universidad de Lima y actualmente trabajo en la AFP Integra, una
empresa dedicada a la administración de fondo de pensiones. Además, creé una
empresa de taxi remisse para ejecutivos y empresas de diversos rubros de nuestra
capital. Es un poco difícil describir cómo llegué a estudiar en este servicio que ofrece
el BRITÁNICO… la verdad es que comenzó siendo una necesidad para mi profesión
y trabajo. Entonces, por recomendación de buenos amigos, quise entrar en esta
institución porque se ajustaba exactamente a lo que quería. Desde un primer momento
tuve una grata impresión por la atención que me brindaron y, además, los cursos que me ofrecieron casaban perfecto
con mis intereses. La calidad de enseñanza es muy buena debido al gran profesionalismo de sus profesores. Hoy
Dentro de mis metas a corto plazo están estudiar un
posgrado en el extranjero y probablemente vivir fuera de
Perú. Este idioma me hará más fácil la vida para cumplir
estas metas y me dará más oportunidades de negocio
en un futuro no muy lejano. Siempre es recomendable
aprender más de lo que ya sabes para ser competitivo
en el mundo actual y tener así más oportunidades en
tu vida.

The solar system board
It’s the world’s most watched and lucrative league– and
attracts top players from all over the world. Manchester
United have won the title 10 times, which makes them
the most successful Premier League club. That is why we
organized a quiz about this extraordinary club and the winner
was Ana Oré Richle.
Con el mismo entusiasmo y empeño del primer día, los
alumnos de Juniors 12 se despidieron del ciclo elaborando
un interesante y creativo board sobre The Solar System. En
él plasmaron sus conocimientos sobre el tema, así como su
creatividad y habilidad para trabajar en equipo.
De esta forma, terminaron el curso de Juniors, recordando
lo aprendido en cada ciclo y de cada profesor, y sobre todo
¡¡¡divirtiéndose!!!

Encouraging our students in San Isidro!

Every month our students show their interest in learning
English, so we - all the San Isidro staff - think about
different activities that students can do in order to
improve their knowledge of the new language. They
participate in every activity we prepare, showing creativity
and imagination.
One of these activities was our “Mother’s Day Acrostic
Contest”. Our Basic four students had the opportunity to show their love for their
mothers - and all the knowledge they’ve already acquired - with the acrostic contest.
From delightful descriptions to declarations of love, our students used their originality to
write an acrostic using their mothers’ names and everything they had learned so far. After
a difficult selection process, our Head and Deputy Heads of centre decided on Karina
Hidalgo’s beautiful acrostic. Congratulations!

these activities.

In our lessons we must give students a chance to develop
their conversation skills. Good conversation skills include
much more than simply speaking with others. Listening,
good body language, questioning, pleasantries, and mutual
respect are important elements in any conversation and are
also personality traits exhibited by successful people.
In short, conversation skills include treating others as you
would like to be treated. Even if you are only giving brief
answers or asking short questions, the tone of your voice
plays a major part in communicating effectively and displaying
good conversation skills.

Facing the challenge

Being a teacher at the BRITÁNICO has been a great experience.
Over the years, I have taught many students and I’ve seen
them thrive. I have great memories of all my groups and I
should say that each and every one of them has been unique,
from the very young students to the adults. They are all people
who look forward to improving their knowledge of English in
order to face a demanding world. Together we’ve learnt many
things, above all the taste for achievement.
People study English for different reasons. Not all intend to
take the FCE or CAE exams. However, what they all want is to
become better at English and in the end many decide to give
it a try and take the exam. They never regret it.
Whatever their motivation is, they make a great effort to do
their best, they attend classes, do homework and despite
having a busy life many find time to work on their own
practising as much as they can. Some of them are students
at school or university, others already work. Nevertheless, all
of them are motivated by their desire to succeed. My role as a
teacher is to guide them through their learning, to keep them
going, to encourage them and to help them reach their goals.
When they do so, their pride is my pride and their joy is my
reward. Being a teacher at the BRITÁNICO has proved to be a
worthwhile experience in itself.

¿QUÉ PASA EN LOS CENTROS?

This is the word that best describes the dynamics at Los
Jardines. Ever since we started, back in the year 2000, the
commitment and responsibility shown by every member
of the team has been great. These characteristics that have
not changed over the last almost nine years operating in
this part of the city continue to be the foundation of all
our activities.
Due to the demand from our clients, we expanded our
branch in 2004, adding 10 more classrooms and a
number of other facilities for our students and staff.

Now, five years later, thanks to the enthusiastic response from our local community, we are about
to start the second expansion which will allow us to have 17 more well-equipped classrooms, a
bigger Teachers’ room, SAC, Auditorium and Cafeteria. We will also have the chance to have a large
car park for our students, visitors and staff.
This is the result of such an excellent and committed work developed here at Los Jardines. I am
really proud of being part of this extraordinary family which has changed my life in so many ways.
I would like to thank all the members of the team for their constant support, a key element for the
effective and efficient work we do here.

HI-5 at the BRITÁNICO

Five, four, three, two, one come with us and have some fun.
On 27 June our Kids 4 performed a delightful and dynamic
Hi-5 musical, in which they not only put into practice their
singing and acting skills, but also their accurate way of
associating objects and meanings. Parents participated by
attending with unbounded enthusiasm to see their children
making use of the language effectively in different significant
activities.
Visiting Perú

Commemorating our Independence Day, and having
this patriotic feeling, a group of enthusiastic, committed
students of Basic 6 created a number of interesting tourist
web pages recommending some lively cities from Peru
where we can go this holiday.
During this project we could enjoy a positive learning
atmosphere which let students produce and show the best
of themselves. As a teacher, I would like to point out that
this kind of activity gives students the opportunity to use
English and also to develop their learning autonomy through
authentic use of the language. I couldn’t imagine doing
these activities without active student-teacher performance.
I’m completely sure that after visiting their web pages, you
would really like to travel to and visit our country.

Over the last 4 years teaching at the BRITÁNICO, I have always put great emphasis on
my students’ practice of what they learn. This time I had my 7 a.m. and 7:40 p.m.
students work on a very interesting project called SOCIAL CUSTOMS AROUND
THE WORLD. It consisted of searching the web for information on social customs
around the five continents. After collecting the information, students had to prepare
a PowerPoint presentation for the class where they had the opportunity to use the
vocabulary and expressions learned in class.
My students once more gave a demonstration of how well they can work if they
are appropriately motivated and challenged. I’m proud to say that the outcome
utterly exceeded my expectations. This definitely was an interesting, memorable and
gratifying activity in which students felt they can achieve anything they want.

Promoting intercultural
learning through
integration and tolerance

Some weeks ago, the removal of thousands of native
Amazonian protesters from a road near Bagua was a topic
of discussion in my intermediate 10 class. This discussion
inspired the class to work on a project where they could do
some research on both British and Peruvian cultures. Thus, we
organized an exhibition about ethnic groups in Peru and UK. I
can only say I was amazed at my students’ commitment. They
prepared stalls decorated with pictures, crafts, traditional
food, linguistic features as well as mythical characters related
to Peruvian and British world views. We invited students from
other classrooms to attend the exhibition and the presenters
shared with them their knowledge about Aguarunas,
Ashaninkas, Quechuas, Aymaras and Shipibos, as well as the
English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh cultures. The experience
was highly satisfactory for both assistants and presenters;
they had the opportunity to interact in English all the time.

Does Great Britain have an
independence day?

It was a question one of my B7 students asked me in class, so
I invited them to investigate about it. It wasn’t till I saw all the
information they brought along that I noticed their interest
in the task, so I turned the whole homework into a Project.
There is no independence day in Great Britain. However, I’m
really sure this was an enlightening experience for all the
people who attended this presentation, including myself,
because we could learn so much more about this country.
Did you know that Ireland has its own anthem? It does! “The
song of the soldier”. Or that the current flag of the United
Kingdom, “THE UNION JACK”, is a combination of the crosses
of the saints of England, Ireland and Scotland?
This Project gave my students the opportunity to put their
speaking skills into more realistic practise and to use the
grammar structures taught during the cycle.
Finally, I want to express my gratitude to my students for all
their hard work and constant enthusiasm.

Reading Projects
At first we had many different ideas about our project.
However, as the days passed we realised that our students
needed an activity to improve their speaking skills.
I was pleasantly surprised to see my students’ beautiful projects
and the enthusiasm they have shown, everything surrounded
by a warm and nice atmosphere. This experience helped me
to also understand we are not only teachers but also lifelong
learners, since I learned a lot from their abilities and work.

So this is what we did: we asked our students to imagine
themselves going to a restaurant and to create a conversation.
They prepared their own material; some did so out of paper
and plastic, others brought sandwiches, sodas and fruit
juice, but one of the most surprising things was that some of
them were dressed as waiters and waitresses.
Let me tell you, my students from Basic 2 and Intermediate
4, that I am very proud of you and if you continue with this
positive attitude you will be successful in whatever you want to
do in your life!
We were really excited to see how involved and eager to
participate our students were. They demonstrated that
although they were in Basic 3, they were able to cope with
this challenging task.
This was a memorable activity for them because they
could broaden their horizons. Not only did they use the
language presented in class, but also they went beyond our
expectations.

El SAC de Los Jardines es muy visitado por nuestros entusiastas
alumnos. Representa para ellos un lugar acogedor donde refuerzan
lo aprendido en clase. La gran diversidad de materiales a disposición
se convierte en un valioso aporte para complementar aún más el
aprendizaje del idioma inglés. El personal a cargo gustosamente
guía al alumno en el uso de los servicios brindados por el SAC.
En el mes de mayo se organizó una exhibición para los alumnos
de Avanzado en la cual pudieron revisar material con las últimas
modificaciones para los exámenes internacionales.
