It is the 50th day after Easter (if we count both Easter and Pentecost), and it replaces the Jewish feast of Pentecost, which took place 50 days after the Passover and celebrated the sealing of the Old Covenant on Mount Sinai. Christ had promised His Apostles that He would send His Holy Spirit, and, on Pentecost, they were granted the gifts of the Spirit. The Apostles began to preach the Gospel in all of the languages that the Jews who were gathered there spoke, and about 3,000 people were converted and baptized that day. That is why Pentecost is often called "the birthday of the Church." On this day, with the descent of the Holy Spirit, Christ's mission is completed, and the New Covenant is inaugurated. It's interesting to note that St. Peter, the first pope, was already the leader and spokesman for the Apostles on Pentecost Sunday (see Acts 2:14). ~http://catholicism.about.com/ LECTOR SCHEDULE Weekend of May 30-31 Saturday 5:00 p.m. Sunday 8:30 a.m. 11:00 a.m. 1:30 p.m. 5:00 p.m. Maureen Wheelin & Scott Major Tim Hayes & Cecilia Nwogu Mimi Soileau & Jocelyn Lyons Rosa Godinez & Gloria Cruz Lynne Sparks-Zantinga Readings for the week of May 24, 2015 Sun Pentecost Sunday Day: Acts 2:1-11; Ps 104; 1 Cor 12:3b-7, 12-13 or Gal 5:16-25; Jn 20:19-23 or Jn 15:26-27, 16:12-15 Mon St Bede the Venerable, Priest & Doctor of the Church; St Gregory VII, Pope; St Mary Magdalene de’ Pazzi, Virgin Sir 17:20-24; Ps 32; Mk 10:17-27 Tues Saint Philip Neri, Priest Sir 35:1-12; Ps 50; Mk 10:28-31 Wed St Augustine of Canterbury, Bishop Sir 36:1, 4-5a, 10-17; Ps 79; Mk 10:32-45 Thurs Sir 42:15-25; Ps 33; Mk 10:46-52 Fri Sir 44:1, 9-13; Ps 149; Mk 11:11-26 Sat Sir 51:12cd-20; Ps 19; Mk 11:27-33 Sun The Most Holy Trinity Dt 4:32-34, 39-40; Ps 33; Rom 8:14-17; Mt 28:16-20 Ignite Adoration Thursday, May 28 - 7:00 –8:00 p.m. Join us as we IGNITE our hearts, lives and parish as we sit at the feet of our Lord Jesus in praise and adoration. “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing.” ~Luke 12:49 Parish Offices closed Memorial Day Monday, May 25 There will be no evening mass or adoration on Memorial Day. May 24, 2015 - Pentecost Sunday It is fitting on this Pentecost Sunday that the Scripture passages speak of the works of the Holy Spirit in the early Christian community, as described in the Acts of the Apostles, and still present to us today. In St. John’s Gospel, Jesus gives His disciples the gifts of the Spirit, peace, and the power to forgive sins. In his First Letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul encourages the faithful to live in unity and to appreciate each member’s gifts, service, and works granted to them by the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as one body in Christ. As Christian stewards, what do we bring weekly to the Eucharistic table through our God-given gifts of time, talent, and treasure to build up our parish communion — to build up the Body of Christ? 33 Days to Morning Glory - Study Program beginning June 7th Leon Bleau said “The only one real sadness in life is not to become a Saint”.
