2007 Annual Report - Chicago Foundation for Women
2007 Annual Report One of the largest women's funds in the world, Chicago Foundation for Women believes that all women and girls should have the opportunity to achieve their potential and live in safe, just and healthy communities. Since 1986, the Foundation has awarded more than 2,500 grants totaling $15 million to hundreds of organizations that make life better for women and girls. The Foundation also influences social justice through advocacy, leadership development and public and grantee education. Chicago Foundation for Women’s core values include gender-specific funding, diversity, accessibility and choice. Our work is rooted in three principles of women’s and girls’ human rights: economic security, freedom from violence and health. 1 Chicago Foundation for Women’s rank among local foundations that serve women and girls. “You—Chicago Foundation for Women and those many programs you support and the many good-hearted people who support you—are doing it for us. Today you are exactly where you should be.” Kathy Najimy Feminist comedienne 22nd Annual Luncheon keynote speaker 1 This has been a year of bold action, innovative advocacy and far-reaching impact—and we are proud to report our biggest grantmaking year ever. We broke our grants record by giving out $2 million to 132 organizations and expanding our reach statewide through the yearlong “What Will It Take?” anti-violence initiative. And, we mounted one of the country’s first coordinated and strategic statewide approaches to change men’s and boys’ attitudes and beliefs about violence against women. It was a breathtaking effort, carried out by supporters and advocates around Illinois, all with the goal of making ours the safest state in the nation for women and girls. With our statewide public awareness campaign, the “What Will It Take?” initiative reached more than 25 million people through billboards, public transportation, radio, television and newspapers. We continued to channel our energies into advocacy, which we believe is the best way to effect meaningful social change. The 78 programs we hosted this year allowed us to reach more people than ever, educating and informing them about the work we do and what it will take to make this world a better one for all women and girls. We also improved our online advocacy: the re-launch of cfw.org with a clean, new layout and customizable email alerts, and the introduction of the Tuesday Blast, our popular and growing weekly e-newsletter that reaches nearly 10,000 subscribers. As always, none of this work would be possible without the support we get from the community and the generosity demonstrated each year at our annual luncheon and symposium, one of the largest gatherings in Chicago. This year our 2,000 guests heard from veteran journalist and White House reporter Helen Thomas. We took heed from her comment: “Women have come a long way, of course, as the cliché goes, but not far enough. We’ve got miles to go before we sleep.” Indeed, we have so much still to do. And we will get it done. With your continued support, someday all women and girls will truly realize their potential and live in safe, just and healthy communities. Mae P. The Foundation uses these resources to grant money, educate our grantees and the public, develop diverse leadership and advocate for women’s and girls’ human rights. With the National Network to End Domestic Violence Fund and its network of state coalitions, the program provides: Direct services: Financial empowerment curriculum and training materials, community volunteerism by Allstate employees, and grants to service providers. Thought leadership: Research, national conferences and other events. Public awareness: A national effort to change societal attitudes about domestic violence. The Allstate Foundation and Chicago Foundation for Women share a message of economic empowerment and violence prevention, and The Allstate Foundation is proud to have been a Presenting Sponsor of the Foundation’s “What Will It Take?” anti-violence initiative. 11 David Gee Patti Gerbie Julia E. Our grants further three principles of women’s human rights: access to health care and information, economic security and freedom from violence. This fiscal year we doubled our past record and gave out $2 million in our biannual grants and in one-time awards through our yearlong, statewide anti-violence initiative, “What Will It Take?”. The following is a list of our grantee partners during fiscal year July 1, 2006 through June 30, 2007. Thank you for your great work. 17 Building the Safest State for All Women and Girls “What Will It Take?” grants address gender-based violence prevention across Illinois. Thanks to a grant from the State of Illinois, we awarded $1 million in grants—most of which funded innovative advocacy and service programs, and the rest in “minigrants” averaging $5,000 for smaller projects and events. Not only was this our first statewide grantmaking effort, it was the first time we funded projects involving men and boys. We received more than $5 million in worthy requests for innovative and collaborative programs throughout the state.
