“Freedom”
Dear Friends,
This weekend we celebrate 240 years of
American independence. We proclaim
“Freedom!” From sea to shining sea, as the
great hum sings, we prize our freedom.
Freedom, as we were reminded last week,
allows us to walk with the Lord, to follow his
call, to go where God sends us. God doesn’t
force us to do his will. He invites and sends.
And God gives us tools to do the work we are called to do.
Sometimes the work God calls us to do scares us. We wonder if
we have the gifts and the talents to do it.We cling to that which is
comfortable and try to hold on to the stuff we have. The clinging
and the holding on inhibit freedom. They stall us in place. Taking
a risk, letting go, allows God to do wonderful things through
us. Today’s Gospel portrays the disciples rejoicing at the success
that happened when they did as Jesus told them to do. In fact
they were surprised by what they did in the name of God. We
need to keep this in mind as we continue the Renew My Church
process. He told Saint Francis of Assisi to do just that, centuries
ago; he tells us to do that in the Archdiocese Chicago today.
Our parish mission statement, now nearly ten years old,
gets its foundation in this week’s Gospel. After telling the
imperfect, and likely frightened disciples how to do it, Jesus
orders them what to do: “Say to them, ‘the Kingdom of God
is at hand for you.’” That’s what we say is key to our mission.
“By Word, Sacrament and service we proclaim the Kingdom of
God is at hand.” And the “we” that are on this mission together
means everyone! It’s not the staff’s mission statement or the
Archbishop’s mission statement. It’s yours and mine. So let’s get
proclaiming!
Who did the proclaiming then and who does it now? Jesus
called simple people - common folk - to do the work of service
and evangelizing. I’m sure as he was sending them they were
frightened of their own futures. They didn’t know where they
were going or how they would be received. He radicalized the
sending by encouraging their sole reliance on the providence of
God. “Don’t go burdened with stuff,” in a sense, he told them.
God will give you what you need. Share what you have and God
will introduce you others who will do the same.
Whenever I read this Gospel, I remember a man I met
in Lourdes a dozen years ago or more. He was walking, yes,
walking, from southern Italy, through that country and France,
to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Walking. He had no money.
He relied on the providence of God and the generosity of others,
for food, for lodging, for companionship and prayers. The hosts
of our lodging site in Lourdes welcomed him to stay for a few
days of rest and prayer. He joined us for our common meals.The
pilgrims and I became quite fond of him. He taught us by the
conversations we shared.
When the time for him came to leave Lourdes, to continue his
journey of faith and witness, he taught us that the Kingdom of
God really is in our midst. As he readied himself for departure,
the Chicago pilgrims offered him some food and other supplies.
He graciously declined, citing today’s Gospel and reminding us
to join him in trusting God’s great providence. In doing so, he
proclaimed the nearness of the Kingdom of God. I never heard
if he made it to Compostela but I have no doubt that he did.
This weekend we welcome Scott Arkenberg as our new
Director of Music and Liturgy. Scott is well known for his ability
to encourage involvement. So get ready, and if he asks for your
help, please say yes.
We also begin a new fiscal year. We did not, sadly, end
the fiscal year debt free. Please allow the new fiscal year to
inspire you to sign up for electronic giving, and be sure you are
budgeting your church support. If we all do this, we will achieve
fiscal viability. This constant battle to balance the budget makes
me think of the old pastor who got up in the pulpit and told
the people, “We have good news and bad news in this parish.
The good news is there is a lot of money in the parish. The bad
news is that it is still in your pockets!” Prayerfully consider your
support and please sign up at givecentral.org so your support
will come to Saint John Berchmans, even when your travel plans
prevent you from doing so.

THINKING ABOUT BECOMING A CATHOLIC?
Is God calling you to a deeper relationship? Looking for

our RCIA program. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
(RCIA) is for anyone 18 and older who would like to learn
more about the Catholic faith and for those who seek to be
baptized, receive First Holy Communion and be confirmed in
the Catholic Church. The RCIA can also help you complete the
necessary steps to become a member of the Catholic Church if
you were baptized in another Christian denomination. RCIA
meets on Thursday evenings, three times per month from
September to April. If you are interested in learning more, if
you know of anyone who might be a candidate for this journey,
or if you are willing to help as a catechist or sponsor, please
contact Shelagh Donoghue in the parish office.

Mass celebrated at 9 a.m. Please mark your calendars and note there will be no 7 a.m. Mass
on Monday, July 4.
SUMMER OUTDOOR MASS SCHEDULE
On Sunday, July 17, and Sunday, August 14, all morning
Masses will be celebrated outdoors—weather permitting.
The 8:15 a.m.; 9:45 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Masses will be
held out front. Chairs will be provided and we’ll let nature
supply the setting as our faith community comes together
to share the blessings and give thanks for the gifts we have
received. Please join us. If the weather doesn’t cooperate,
Masses will be held as usual in the church.

MINISTRY OF CARE VISITS TO THE SICK AND
HOMEBOUND
The heat of the summer may not have you
thinking about Christmas, but we’re invoking
the “spirit” of the season next month as we
kick off our Christmas In August Scholarship
Drive! Don’t wait until the end of the year
to exercise your giving spirit. Look for the
tree in the back of Church during the first
weeks of August. Take an ornament, make a
donation and make an SJB school or religious
education student’s dream a reality! If you’d

look for SJB’s Christmas in August Campaign!
Your spiritual needs are very important to the staff at St.
John Berchmans. Ministers of Care are available to bring
communion to parishioners who are unable to attend Mass
due to illness or infirmity. A communion visit includes
time to listen and pray, as well as sharing the Eucharist,
with those who are homebound, in nursing homes or
in the hospital. This ministry is provided by trained and
certified lay people, members of religious communities,
and ordained deacons and priests. To request a visit from
a Minister of Care, for yourself or a loved one, please call
the parish office in the rectory at 773-486-4300 and ask
for Shelagh Donoghue.

“¡Libertad!”
Queridos Amigos,
en Lourdes hace una docena de años o más. Había estado caminando desde
el sur de Italia, a través de ese país y Francia, a Santiago de Compostela,
en España. Caminaba. No tenía dinero. Confió en la providencia de
Dios y la generosidad de los demás, de comida, alojamiento, compañía
y oraciones. Los anfitriones de nuestro sitio de alojamiento en Lourdes
le dieron la bienvenida a permanecer unos días para descansar y orar.
Se unió a nosotros en nuestras comidas comunes. Los peregrinos y yo
disfrutábamos de su presencia. Aprendimos por las conversaciones que
compartimos.
Este fin de semana celebramos 240 años de la
independencia de Estados Unidos. Proclamamos
“¡Libertad!” De costa a costa, como dice la canción,
apreciamos nuestra libertad. La libertad, como se
nos recordó la semana pasada, nos permite caminar
con el Señor, a seguir su llamado, a ir a donde Dios
nos envía. Dios no nos obliga a hacer su voluntad.
Nos invita y envía. Y Dios nos da las herramientas
para hacer el trabajo que estamos llamados a hacer.
Cuando llegó el momento para que él partiera de Lourdes, para
continuar su camino de fe y testimonio, nos enseñó que el Reino de
Dios realmente está entre nosotros. A medida que se preparaba para la
partida, los peregrinos de Chicago le ofrecieron algo de comida y otros
suministros. Él amablemente se negó, citando el Evangelio de hoy y que
nos recuerda a unirse a él confiando en la gran providencia de Dios. Al
hacerlo, él proclamó la cercanía del Reino de Dios. Nunca escuche si él
llegó a Compostela pero no tengo ninguna duda de que él lo hizo.
A veces el trabajo que Dios nos llama a hacer nos asusta. Nos
preguntamos si tenemos los dones y talentos para hacerlo. Nos aferramos
a lo que es cómodo y tratamos de mantener las cosas que tenemos.
Manteniendo y aferrándonos de estas cosas nos privan de la libertad.
Nos estancan en un lugar. Soltándolas y arriesgándonos permite que
Dios haga cosas maravillosas a través de nosotros. El Evangelio de hoy
representa a los discípulos regocijándose en el éxito que ocurrió cuando
hicieron lo que Jesús les dijo que hicieran. De hecho, se sorprendieron
por lo que hicieron en el nombre de Dios. Tenemos que tener esto en
cuenta a medida que continuamos el proceso de Renueva mi Iglesia.
Siglos atrás, Él le dijo a San Francisco de Asís que hiciera precisamente
eso, hoy nos dice hacer eso en la Arquidiócesis de Chicago.
Este fin de semana le damos la bienvenida a Scott Arkenberg como
nuestro nuevo Director de Música y Liturgia. Scott es conocido por su

Nuestra declaración de la misión parroquial, de hace casi diez años,
obtiene su fundación en el Evangelio de esta semana. Después de decirle

Jesús les ordena lo que se puede hacer: “digan: ‘el Reino de Dios está
cerca.’” Eso es lo que decimos que es clave de nuestra misión. “Por medio
de la palabra, Sacramento y servicio proclama que el Reino de Dios está
cerca.”Y el “nosotros” que forma parte de esta misión juntos quiere decir
¡cada uno! No es la misión del personal o la misión del arzobispo. Es la
suya y la mía. Así que, ¡proclamemos!
¿Quién proclamó anteriormente y quién lo hace ahora? Jesús
llamó a la gente sencilla - la gente común - a hacer obras de servicio
y evangelización. Estoy seguro de que cuando Él los enviaba estaban
temerosos de su propio futuro. No sabían a dónde iban o cómo serían
recibidos. Él radicalizó su envió alentándolos para que dependieran y
pusieran su confianza en la providencia de Dios. “No vayan cargados de
cosas”, en un sentido, les dijo. Dios les dará lo que necesiten. Compartan
lo que tienen y Dios les introducirá a otros que harán lo mismo.

Cada vez que leo este Evangelio, recuerdo a un hombre que conocí
Nuestra Misión:
“Arraigada en Cristo y tocada por Su amor y misericordia, la comunidad de San Juan Berchmans encuentra unidad en su diversidad, proclama por medio
de la palabra, Sacramento y servicio, que el Reino de Dios esta cerca y declara que todos son bienvenidos en este lugar.”
