JUNE 29, 2014
At Masses around the world will be celebrated today the feast of Sts Peter and Paul, companions and
spiritual brothers. These two are often called founding pillars of the Church. Peter is often read as the
rock, the steady one at the center, the leader of the
Jewish Christian community in Jerusalem and Antioch and Rome. And Paul, is the one sent to the
margins, the peripheries, to bring good news to the
gentiles in Galatia, Athens, and Thessalonica.
In the first reading we are shown the path to freedom. There is a spiritual pattern in the interaction
between Peter and the angel. We can see it by looking this way. Three times the angel speaks to Peter,
saying get up, get ready, follow me. And three
times Peter responds: the chain fall from his wrists,
he follows. This is what we too are called to do
when we have fallen back in the prison of fear: we
are to get up, get ready, and then follow the Spirit
who wants to free us. We might note that Peter
does all this without realizing that what was happening was real. This path is opened up for Peter,
not by plotting his escape on his own, or by asking
where he was being led, but by trusting the angel of
the Lord.
What is it like when we follow the Spirit Just like
for Peter, it feels like a jail break. It feels like being
set free. How will we know if we have followed the
good spirit. We will know if we have followed the
good angel if we end up in the same place as Paul.
If we are able to look back at what we have done, at
the path down which we have been led, and say
``following this voice has meant pouring out my
whole life in the service of God, of the poor, of the
marginalized. It has cost me, and called me to give
more of myself than I thought possible to be emptied completely, yet not left feeling hollow

En las Misas alrededor del mundo hoy se celebra el
Día de los Apóstoles Pedro y Pablo, compañeros y
hermanos espirituales. Ellos dos muchas veces son
llamados los pilares fundadores de la Iglesia. Pedro
es llamado la roca, el centro estable, el líder de la
comunidad Cristiana judía en Jerusalén y Antioquia
y Roma. Y Pablo, es el que es mandado a las
afueras, los márgines, a llevar buenas noticias a los
gentiles en Galata, Atenas y Tesalónica.
En la Primer lectura se nos demuestra el camino a la
libertad. Hay un patrón espiritual en la interacción
entre Pedro y el ángel. Lo podemos mirar al mirar a
las cosas de esta manera. El ángel le habla a Pedro
tres veces, diciendo levántate, prepárate, sígueme.
Y tres veces Pedro responde: la cadena cae de sus
muñecas, el sigue. Esto es también a lo que somos
llamados a hacer cuando caemos en la prisión del
temor: debemos levantarnos, prepararnos, y seguir
al Espíritu que quiere liberarnos. Debemos notar
que Pedro hace todo esto sin darse cuenta que lo
qhe pasaba era real. Este camino esta abierto para
Pedro, no al planear su escape el solo, ni
preguntando a donde era llevado, sino por confiar
en el ángel del Señor.
Como se siente cuando seguimos al Espíritu, al
igual que Pedro se siente como un escape de la
carcel. Se siente como ser liberado. ¿Como
sabemos si hemos seguido al espíritu bueno?
Vamos a saber si hemos seguido al angel bueno si
terminamos en el mismo lugar que Pablo. Si
podemos mirar atras a lo que hicimos, en el camino
donde fuimos dirigidos y decir “seguir esta voz ha
significado poner toda mi vida al servicio de Dios,
de los pobres, de los marginalizados. Me ha
costado, y se me ha pedido dar más de mi mismo de
lo que pensé posible, pero no me siento vacío.

Dcr 9, 9-10- Rm 8, 9. 11-13- Mt 11, 25-30
Thánh Phêrô là đá tảng trên đó Chúa Kitô thiết lập Giáo Hội
của Người; Thánh Phaolô là «dụng cụ ưu tuyển » để mang Tin
Mừng đến cho các dân tộc. Thánh Phêrô, người đánh cá miền
Galilêa, ít học, đã lập gia đình, theo Thầy Giêsu ngay từ buổi
đầu sứ vụ, là người sau khi đã vượt qua những ngày đen tối
của cuộc Thương Khó của Chúa, sẽ có trách nhiệm cũng cố
anh em trong đức tin và chăn dắt đoàn chiên của Chúa Kitô
(Mt 16,13-19). Còn Thánh Phaolô là người có nhiều điều để tự
hào, về gia thế, về học thức, về đời sống đạo hạnh, người
Pharisêu sốt sắng. Ông chưa hề gặp mặt Ðức Giêsu khi Ngài
còn sống. Nhưng ông gặp Đức Kitô Phục Sinh với biến cố ngã
ngựa trên đường Damas, Phaolô trở nên vị tông đồ của ơn cứu
rỗi đến từ đức Tin. (x. Tđcv 9,1-22)
Cả hai đều được Ðức Giêsu gọi. Phêrô được gọi khi ông đang
thả lưới bắt cá nuôi vợ con. Phaolô được chính Đức Giêsu
Phục sinh gọi khi ông hung hăng tiến vào Ðamas, lúc ông
đang làm tông đồ không biết mỏi mệt của dân ngoại (x. Tđcv
9,1-22). Cả hai đã từ bỏ tất cả để theo Ngài. Tất cả của Phêrô
là gia đình và nghề nghiệp. Tất cả của Phaolô là những gì ông
cậy dựa vênh vang. Bỏ tất cả là chấp nhận bấp bênh, tay trắng.
Cả hai đều đã từng có lần vấp ngã. Vấp ngã bất ngờ sau khi
theo Thầy như Phêrô, trong một phút giây quá tự tin vào sức
mình. Ngã ngựa bất ngờ và trở nên mù lòa như Phaolô, trong
lúc tưởng mình sáng mắt và đi đúng hướng. Vấp ngã nào cũng
đau và in một dấu không phai. Vấp ngã bẻ lái đưa con người đi
vào hướng mới.
Chương trình mầu nhiệm của Chúa Quan Phòng dẫn đưa
Phêrô tới Roma, nơi đây ngài đổ máu như chứng tá sau cùng
và cao cả nhất của đức tin «Thầy là Con Thiên Chúa hằng
sống» (Mt 16,16), và của lòng mến đối với Thầy chí Thánh
«Lạy Thầy, Thầy biết con yêu mến Thầy» (Mt 16, 17). Như
vậy ngài đã chu toàn sứ mệnh trở nên dấu hiệu của lòng trung
thành với Chúa Kitô và của sự hiệp nhất của tất cả Dân Chúa.
Phần Phaolô, trong các chuyến ra đi truyền giáo, ngài không
ngừng rao giảng Chúa Kitô bị đóng đanh và lôi kéo nhiều

nhóm người trong các thành phố khác nhau miền Châu Á và
Châu Âu trở về với Tin Mừng của Chúa. Sau khi qua Thổ Nhĩ
Kỳ, Hy Lạp, ngài đến Roma. Và chính ở đây, ngài được phúc
tử đạo để làm chứng cho Chúa Kitô. Chính ngài đã nói lên
trong bài đọc thứ hai Thánh Lễ hôm nay rằng : « Chúa đã gần
gũi tôi và ban sức mạnh cho tôi, để qua tôi, việc rao giảng sứ
điệp Tin Mừng được thực hiện và để các dân ngoại được nghe
biết đến ». (2Tm 4, 17-18)
Phêrô và Phaolô đều yêu Ðức Giêsu cách nồng nhiệt, vì họ
cảm nhận sâu xa mình được Ngài yêu mến. «Này anh Simon,
anh có mến Thầy không? Thưa Thầy có, Thầy biết con yêu
mến Thầy.» (Ga 21,16) Cả Phaolô cũng yêu Ðấng ông chưa hề
chung sống, vì Ngài là «Con Thiên Chúa, Ðấng đã yêu mến tôi
và hiến mạng vì tôi.» (Gl 2, 20) Phaolô đã không ngần ngại
khẳng định: Không gì có thể tách được chúng ta ra khỏi Tình
Yêu của Ðức Kitô (x. Rm 8, 35.39) yề
Tình yêu Ðức Kitô là linh hồn của đời truyen giáo, vì nói cho
cùng truyền giáo chính là giúp người khác nhận ra và yêu mến
Ðấng đã yêu tôi và yêu cả nhân loại. Cả hai vị tông đồ đều
hăng say rao giảng, bất chấp muôn vàn nguy hiểm khổ đau.
Phêrô đã từng chịu đòn vọt ngục tù (x. Cv 5,40) Còn nỗi đau
của Phaolô thì không sao kể xiết (x. 2C 11, 23-28). « Tôi
mang trên mình tôi những thương tích của Ðức Giêsu» (Gl 6,
1-7).
Cả hai vị thánh đã chết như Thầy, đã lấy máu mình mà làm
chứng. . . .
Hội Thánh hôm nay vẫn cần những Phêrô và Phaolô mới, dám
bỏ, dám theo và dám yêu dám sống và dám chết cho Ðức Kitô
và Tin Mừng. Hội Thánh vẫn cần những chiếc cột và những
tảng đá. Với lòng ngưỡng mộ biết ơn các ngài, chúng ta quyến
một lòng trung thành với Đức Tin đã lãnh nhận.
Xin với Mẹ Maria, Nữ Vương Các Thánh Tông Đồ, cầu cho
chúng con. Amen.
