The Dewey Docket
January 2009
Welcome to a new year with lots of new books to
discover!
This is my favorite time of the year for reading: all
the annual book awards from the American Library Association are announced! The new Caldecott and Newberry Award books will be announced at 9:45am on January 26th, along with a
number of other Children’s and Young Adult
Awards. Also announced are the “Best of” lists,
compiled by librarians around the country as their
choices of the best books, audio books, and graphic
novels published during 2008. Be sure to check
that day for the winners.
I have recently been in contact with Florida Virtual
School and have asked them to come and present
information sessions for interested parents and students. I hope to host this in early February, so be
sure to check with us for the exact date and time.

We will also be hosting VPK Roundup again this
year for all Lake County parents and children.
Child Care Choice Services will be here with VPK
providers on April 20th from 9:30am—4:00pm. If
you are a resident of Polk or Osceola counties, just
ask one of us for information on how to contact
VPK in your county.
We have also started brainstorming for the 2009
Summer Reading Program: Be Creative @ your library. Plans are still in the works, so be sure to
check with us closer to summer.

Award Winners
The Caldecott Medal was named in honor
of a nineteenth-century English illustrator.
It is awarded annually to the artist of the
most distinguished American picture book

The Newberry Medal was named for a

The Michael L. Printz Award is an award
for a book that exemplifies literary excellence in young adult literature. It is named
for a Topeka, Kansas school librarian who
was a long-time active member of the
Young Adult Library Services Association.

We have some awesome programs already scheduled for this year, so be sure to check out the information elsewhere in
the newsletter to see when Benjamin Franklin and Mark Twain will be at the library.
A recent article in the Orlando Sentinel stated that public library usage is up more than 20% in some areas of the United
States due to job losses and empty bank accounts. The resources that are available at libraries are helping to replace
everything from magazine subscriptions and DVD rentals to home internet. According to one study, a family of four saves
as much as $2500 a year by borrowing 10 items per month instead of buying. Unfortunately, budget cuts are also
affecting many libraries nationwide, and some libraries have closed or drastically reduced hours due to budget shortfalls.
Our library has certainly seen an increase in usage, and hopefully we will continue to be able to offer resources that the
community has come to expect. There may be longer waits to get the latest bestseller due to fewer copies being
purchased, and the delays to log on to the internet may increase, but we do not anticipate reducing hours. At least there
is some good news to be shared!
