The Redemptorists
Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time From the Rector Very Rev. Joseph Tizio, C.Ss.R. I believe that it is important to periodically give you an update on the financial state of the parish. We are all members of the Body of Christ here at the Basilica and that means that we all must work together to keep this community alive and active for many years to come. St. Paul reminds us that each member of the Body must work with the other members to keep it alive and strong. Of course, it is through our worship together, especially in the Eucharist, that we are bonded into this great Body of Christ. However, it is also through our ministries and our financial sacrifices that we strengthen the Body. So, it is important for me to periodically let you know how we are doing financially. For the past several months, much of the work on our parish finances has been “behind the scenes”, in ways you may not see or know. These past months, we have worked hard to get a better understanding of the state of our finances and to understand what will need to be done. We have slowly been trying to better organize our parish finance office and create systems and structures which will allow for a more accurate and professional reporting of our financial status. Our hope is that this will give us a clearer picture of exactly what we will need to do. We are also preparing to form a finance council composed of professionals who can offer us advice and direction. We are also hoping to begin regular parish staff meetings so that we can better work together toward our common goals. So what can you do to help us at this point? More than anything else, please be conscious of your weekly contribution. Our main source of income is the weekly collection. We literally depend on your generosity to continue the ministry of this wonderful community. You may not realize how important your weekly offering is but you need to know that it is essential and most deeply appreciated! The next time you hear God calling, have the courage to walk through the door and say “Here I am, Lord.” NEWS & EVENTS Ash Wednesday Join us at the Basilica as we begin the season of Lent. Ash Wednesday is February 10th. Masses will be offered at 7:00am, 12:10pm, 5:00pm, and 7:00pm in Spanish. During this season of preparation, Lent helps to deepen our faith by our individual and common acts of prayer, fasting and sacrifice. For More Information and to View Our Schedule of Events: www.bostonsbasilica.com/lent Sacrament of Reconciliation Wednesdays during Lent 6:30pm-8:00pm Every Wednesday evening during Lent there will be two Redemptorists available for confession in the Basilica. One priest will be in the confessional and the other priest will be offering the sacrament face-to-face at a private area set up near the Purgatorian altar (to the right of the main altar). Stations of the Cross Fridays during Lent 7:00pm Every Friday evening during Lent, there will be the Stations of the Cross in the Basilica. People are invited to walk the Way of the Cross with the priests and seminarians. Lenten Regulations Abstinence -Catholics over 14 years of age are bound to the obligation of abstinence. Abstinence is to be observed on Ash Wednesday (February 10, 2016) and on all Fridays of Lent. On days of abstinence, meat may not be used at all. Fast – Catholics over 18 and up to the beginning of their 60th year are bound to the obligation of fasting. Ash Wednesday (February 10, 2016) and Good Friday (March 25, 2016) meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. Regarding other weekdays of Lent, participation in daily Mass and the voluntary observance of fasting is recommended. Commendable, particularly during Lent, is generosity to local, national and world programs of sharing our abundance, the traditional Lenten Devotions and all the self-denial summed up in the Christian concept of “mortification.” Annual Cori Forms for Volunteers The Archdiocese of Boston requires that all clergy, parish staff (full and part time), together will all volunteers (17 years of age and older) who minister to or have the potential for unmonitored access to children, youth, elderly or the disabled, undergo a CORI check. This process requires an individual to fill out a CORI request form annually in accordance with this policy.
