A recent report from USA Today stated the average debt in 2015
for U.S. college graduates was about $35,000. During the 20142015 school year, only 48 percent of the 1,066 UHV students who
graduated had student loans. Among those UHV graduates, the average amount of debt was a little more than $27,000.
“One of the essential goals and priorities of UHV is to provide
a quality, affordable education,” UHV President Vic Morgan said.
“Our students come from all economic backgrounds, and we want to
ensure that they have the opportunity to earn a degree without being
hampered by overwhelming debt.”
Students working to earn undergraduate degrees at UHV already
have an advantage when it comes to avoiding debt. According to
2016-2017 tuition and fees data from CollegeForAllTexans.com,
in-state UHV students who take 15 credit hours each fall and spring
semester for four years will save up to $10,711 compared with

More than 1,600 H-E-B vendors, suppliers and Partners (employees) gathered in San Antonio
from June 8-10 for H-E-B’s 31st
annual Tournament of Champions, one of the largest charitable
events in the nation. This year’s
tournament raised $8.4 million
to benefit hundreds of Texas nonprofit organizations focused on
the needs of children and families
across the state. Since its inception
in 1986, the H-E-B Tournament of
Champions has raised close to $90
million for 300 Texas nonprofits,
many of which reside in the Gulf
Coast area.
An annual tradition, the H-E-B
Tournament of Champions was
created to provide an opportunity
for H-E-B’s suppliers to team up
with the company to support nonprofit organizations focused on
providing basic needs and exciting
new opportunities for children and
families across the state of Texas.
“Because of the strong support
from our Partners, suppliers and
vendors for this annual charity
event, we are able to make a positive impact on the lives of hun-
dreds of thousands of children and
families throughout Texas,” said
Winell Herron, Group Vice President of Public Affairs and Diversity. “The H-E-B Tournament of

one deserving organization, and

Opening Reception for “Art Cars from the
Permanent Collection” June 25, 2016

p.m. to 7 p.m., Five Points Museum of Contemporary Art will host
an opening reception for the new
exhibit, “Art Cars from the Permanent Collection.” This exhibit will
feature several art cars from internationally acclaimed artists as well
as new acquisitions, and will take
place in the newly renovated large
gallery at Five Points Museum.

Luncheon workshop to focus on offering
better customer service
Every business offers a product
or service to customers, but the
way a business serves its customers is a key factor in success.
That is the focus of the June 17
University of Houston-Victoria
Small Business Development Center luncheon workshop Customer
Service: On the Front Lines. The
workshop will begin at noon in the
Welder Conference Room located
in Room 110A of UHV University
North, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St.
There is a $10 registration fee, and
lunch will be provided.
“Customer service is essential
to businesses, especially in the
digital age,” UHV SBDC Director
Joe Humphreys said. “In today’s
world, potential customers are able
to look up reviews of businesses at
the touch of a button, so it’s vitally
important that businesses emphasize good customer service in all
scenarios.”
The workshop will focus on how
business owners and their employees should interact with customers
from the moment they make contact to after the transaction is completed. Attendees also will discuss
working with customers through
different mediums, including by
phone, in person or online.
As with most things in life, mistakes can be made. One topic that
will be emphasized is how to deal
with customer complaints. The

finding a way to turn an issue into
a positive or reconciling experi-

“Whether it’s in person or on
the phone, the first rule is to stay
calm,” he said. “Let the customer
explain the issue, restate it so they
know you understand, acknowledge any mistakes and thank them
for letting you know. Being calm
and courteous goes a long way toward turning what was a problem
into a positive experience.”
The workshop is designed to
help attendees develop skills, rules
and habits to help create a reputation for excellent customer service.
“Far too often, companies and
individuals forget that a company’s
success relies on the satisfaction of
its customers,” said Farhang Niroomand, dean of the UHV School
of Business Administration. “This
is a good opportunity for small
business owners and entrepreneurs
in the Victoria area to refine their
customer service skills.”
The UHV SBDC offers assistance on starting, growing and
financing a business; contracting opportunities; and recovering
from disaster. Most of its services
are free to area small business
owners in Aransas, Bee, Calhoun,
DeWitt, Gonzales, Goliad, Jackson, Karnes, Lavaca, Refugio and
Victoria counties. It is part of a nationwide small business assistance
program serving the small business community and federal, state
and local governments.

Gente, como yo, that try to do
a bit for the community sometimes cannot help but wonder why
things aren’t forgotten or just ignored. Then there are those whose
spouses, like mine, who can’t wait
to bring up a sore subject matter, años después, muchos años

my motorcycle escapade and probably why I don’t run for office of

Many years ago, after being
married a few short months, I was
faced with a dilemma that was

of super heroes. I had been sitting
at home, when my mother came to
our home next door with the message, from my wife, that all my
work clothes had been stolen from
the washateria. I guess the modern
word is laundromat.

Once upon a time, sugar was
mostly relegated to desserts. But
now, excessive amounts can be
found in our everyday foods and
beverages, and it’s taking a toll,
according to recently published
studies.

Gone, but not forgotten

This is the story of a veteran that
(like many) goes unheralded for
their service after leaving the military. His name is Ervin Williams.
Ervin was born on November 14,
1953 in Tivoli, Texas. He enlisted
and served four years in the Marine Corp. After his discharge, he
attended the University of Corpus
Christi and the Victoria College
where he later taught a truck driving course. He worked at the E.I.
DuPont plant, in Victoria, while
attending to his Tasty BBQ business. He also served as county
commissioner.
Ervin was a very proud Marine
and he decided to find something
that he could get involved in to
help those veterans that had already served. So he became a Veteran Peer to Peer Group meeting
facilitator.
Ervin and I started facilitating
Veteran Peer to Peer meetings in
Victoria and Port Lavaca, Texas.
While working together, we started investigating the possibility of
establishing a VA funded Vet. Center in the Victoria Crossroads.
We contemplated the What,
Who, Where and When to start
the effort. We decided to seek help
from our city and county offices. We contacted county commissioners Danny Garcia and Gary Burns
and asked for their help. They immediately agreed to help work out
the details on how to get started.
Irvin and I decided to get endorsements from our city mayor
and all seven county judges in the
Golden Crescent Area. We then
contacted our congressman’s Veteran Field Representative. In the
meantime, the DAV Chapter 169
of Victoria decided to take charge
of the project and carry it through.
Ervin was a member of that committee.
We were finally able to launch
forward with the project with the
help of Congressman Blake Farenthold’s field representative J.D.
Kenedy, the DAV Chapter 169 and
the Victoria county commissioners.
With the endorsements in hand,
we then visited the Vet. Center in
Corpus Christi to obtain knowledge on the administration and
services provided to veterans.
Brother Ervin in the meantime,
kept conducting veteran group
meetings for a total of seven years.
The last three years, he funded the
meals for the group out of his own
pocket. He would transport veterans to wherever they needed to go
for help. He was always picking
up vets that were homeless, feeding them and then taking them to
get help.
Ervin wore out a new car transporting vets to San Antonio and
back. He used his old truck to
transport them when his car broke
down. The old truck did not have

A/C, so he bought a used car and
he kept rolling down the highway
to San Antonio.
Ervin was so busy serving his
brother vets that he was not able to
participate as much as he wanted
to on the work for the Vet. Center
that was ongoing. But we would
keep him abreast of all the developments. Ervin suffered a brain aneurysm
in mid September, 2015 and was
transported to Houston where he
had brain surgery. The doctors
were very optimistic and were
saying that we would recover because of his strong will to live. He
regained conscience and was very
happy for the fast development
and coming together of our Crossroads Veteran Service Center. He
was really looking forward to being present at the ribbon cutting
ceremony.
The Lord made his call and took
him home on September 22, 2015.

the Crossroads Vet. Center ribbon
cutting ceremony because I felt his

businesses pop up. ‘We don’t want
to be down here, we want to be a
little higher.’ He’s learning about
that,
Loa grew up on a farm in Victoria and was drafted into the
Army before his 18th birthday. He
served in World War II, returned
to Corpus Christi for a stint at the
Sinclair refinery and eventually
started a tire and auto parts store
in 1966. The small two-bay workshop played second to the retail
parts business until a larger auto
parts chain opened up down the
street. Loa took a gamble, moved
to an eight-bay garage and shifted
his main focus to auto repair almost overnight.
“Dad would pick us up after
school, we’d watch ‘Gilligan’s Island’ for 30 minutes and then he’d
pick us up to go to work because
he didn’t want us to be lazy,” Gomez said. “We’d do our homework there. He raised all six of
us through the business, and he’s

What began as filing and alphabetizing in an era without computers evolved into catalog parts sales
for Gomez, who has worked at
Loa’s since she can remember.
“Time just goes by, and you
don’t realize you’re in the next
chapter,” Gomez said. “I don’t like
to sell, but I’ve become a salesperson. When customers aren’t sure
what they want, you have to be
there to help them figure it out.”
Her passion, it turns out, is on
the marketing and public relations
side. In the coming year, Gomez
plans to shift away from daily operational responsibilities and focus
on outreach that her customers can
get excited about.
“I’m tired of women getting
their eyes poked at garages,”
Gomez said. “In the near future,
we’re going to host a ladies’ night,
serve sparkling grape juice, turn
everything pink and teach the ladies how to change a tire. I love
to educate people and get them to
know what to ask when they’re at
a garage.”
Loa instilled the importance of
one-to-one customer service early
on, Gomez said. In an industry
in which so many customers feel
they have been taken advantage of
by other shops, Loa’s approach focuses on customer education.
“You can’t just show customers
an estimate,” Gomez said. “You
have to show them how things
work. A tune-up used to be so simple. You used to have room to get
in under the hood and work. Now,
the engine is mounted sideways,
and it’s all cramped up. There are
so many sensors, and they control
everything. We try to show customers how the systems interact.”
As Corpus Christi grows and
the impact of online reviews soars,
Gomez notes a changing client
base. Her clients are younger and
more diverse. A business that once
served its immediate neighborhood, Loa’s Tire and Auto Supply
now attracts customers from as
far away as Ingleside and Rockport. Gomez credits the Internet,
and though Loa himself is com-
ing around to modern marketing
methods, he’s still sticking to the
staples.
“We’re into email, Face book
and social media,” Gomez said.
“He wants to put ads in the phone
book. We did have a customer
yesterday who found us in the
phonebook and called us. He’s still
sharp.”

4. Remember that spending time
with a potential employer takes
valuable time out of your former
bosses’ day, so try to give something back. For instance, after receiving a good job reference, write
a personal thank-you letter or (at
a minimum) send an email. Better
still, send a thank-you note with a
gift card, or offer to take your former boss to lunch/dinner.
5. If you win the new position,
call or email your former boss and
thank them again for the positive
references. At the same time, you
can provide your new professional
contact information.
Additionally, it’s critical to be
certain of the feedback from your
professional references. If you are
not 100 percent convinced that
yourprofessional references and
past employers will relay positive comments about you to prospective employers, have them
checked out. A professional reference check
can either put your mind at ease, or
supply you with the critical information and evidence that may be
blocking your job search efforts.

The Victoria Police Department
Crime Prevention Unit is here to
provide you with the information
you need to reduce your chances
of becoming a victim of crime.
We approach crime prevention
from three different angles: educational, physical and community
involvement.
Our educational approach includes crime prevention classes
in which we address the crimes
occurring in Victoria and their prevention. Some of the most requested topics are burglary prevention,
home security, civilian response
to active shooter events, Rape Aggression Defense and scams and
ID theft prevention.
Classes are held in the Community Room at the Victoria Mall;
however, if you need a speaker for
a business safety training, church
or club meeting we will be happy
to accommodate you.
In addition to our classes, the
Crime Prevention Unit also offers the Civilian Police Academy,
which is one of our most popular
programs. The CPA is directed
to those who want to learn more
about the operation of the Victoria
Police Department, what we as police officers do, why we do it and
Crescent and the Boys & Girls
Club of Victoria.
Every year, UHV Career Services hosts a part-time job fair to connect students with area employers.
The office also hosts several other
events during the year, including
field-specific fairs and a military
career fair.
“Loans should always be a last
resort,” Williams said. “We always
tell students to borrow responsibly
and only get what they need.”
Another reason UHV graduates’
loan amounts are lower than the
national average is because of the
options the university offers for
paying tuition and fees, UHV Assistant Bursar Ashley Sisson said.
In addition to paying their tuition
up front at the beginning of each
semester, students have the option
to pay using an installment plan or
an Institutional Tuition Loan.
If students use an installment
plan, their tuition and fees are divided into five payments spread
throughout the semester with a
one-time $20 service charge. The
plan is available during the spring
and fall semesters. Students also
can apply a second installment
plan toward their housing and
meal plans.
“The university has some great
payment options,” Huerta said.
“Between my financial aid and my
job on campus, I was able to pay
my tuition through the semester
with no problem.”
The Institutional Tuition Loan
program defers students’ payments until later in the semester.
The cost is deferred 90 days in the
spring and fall, and 30 days in the
summer. This plan comes with a
one-time service charge of 1.25
percent of the student’s total tuition and fees for the semester.
“These methods give students
time to take care of their balances
throughout the year,” Sisson said.
“We want to make paying for education as stress-free as possible,
and these methods help make sure
they don’t have to scramble for a
large lump sum at the beginning of
every semester.”

The university has several resources available to help students pay for their education, said
Lashon Williams, director of the
UHV Office of Financial Aid. The
first step to accessing those resources is to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
The information from the FAFSA
is used to determine if students are
eligible for need-based scholarships or grants.
“The university tries to give
out as much ‘free money,’ such as
scholarships and grants, as possible,” Williams said. “A lot of
students qualify for Pell and Texas
Education grants, and the sooner
they get their applications in, the
more likely they are to receive
funds.”
In addition, students can apply for merit-based scholarships
through the university and other
sources, such as nonprofits and
foundations. Huerta was able to
earn extra aid from sports scholarships.
“I played softball and soccer,
and I got a softball scholarship,”
Huerta said. “I just kept applying
for any kind of scholarship or aid I
could find.”
If grants and scholarships aren’t
enough or are not available, students also have the option to take
part in a work study program.
Students can work various jobs
around campus in Information
Technology, campus offices or
Jaguar Dining Hall. Some students
even are hired to drive campus
shuttle buses. Off-campus work
study options also are available
through nonprofit organizations
such as the YMCA of the Golden

Una persona que puede estar afectada por contaminantes de emisiones atmosféricas de una planta tiene derecho a solicitar una audiencia. Si se solicita una audiencia de caso impugnado, debe presentar lo siguiente: (1) su nombre (o para un grupo o asociación, un representante oficial), dirección, número de teléfono y
número de facsímile si lo tiene; (2) el nombre del solicitante y número de permiso; (3) la declaración “[yo/nosotros] solicito una audiencia de un caso impugnado”;
(4) una descripción específica de como se vería adversamente afectado por la solicitud y emisiones atmosféricas de la planta de manera que no es común para el
público en general; (5) la ubicación y distancia de su propiedad con relación a la planta; y (6) una Descripción de como emplea la propiedad la cual puede ser
impactada por la planta y (7) una lista de todas las cuestiones disputadas de hecho que se somete durante el período de comentarios. Si la petición la hace un
grupo o asociación, el miembro o miembros que tienen derecho a solicitar una audiencia y los intereses que el grupo o la asociación busca proteger, también se
deben identificar. Las peticiones para una audiencia de caso impugnado se deben presentar por escrito dentro de 30 días después de este aviso a la Oficina del
Funcionario Jefe, a la dirección a continuación.

how we train. The CPA consists of
12 weekly classes which include
some hands on training. Some
of the more entertaining classes
include searches and handcuffing techniques, building searches,
traffic stops and firearms.
Although the Civilian Police
Academy doesn’t directly lead to
employment with the Victoria Police Department, it will give you a
chance to meet others with similar
interests and give you the opportunity to be a part of the Civilian
Police Academy Alumni Association. The Alumni are a very
active group of volunteers who
work with the police department at
many community events throughout the year.
Residential and commercial security surveys and VIN etching are
a part of our physical approach.
If you are interested in a security survey simply make an appointment with us and a Certified
Crime Prevention Specialist will
come to your home or business to
assess your current security measures and make recommendations
for improvement. If you want to
add a measure of security to your
vehicle come by our office and
have your vehicle’s identification
number etched in its windows. A
vehicle with its VIN etched in the
windows is much less attractive to
a criminal and may add value to
your vehicle.
Our third approach to crime
prevention is community involvement. In addition to the Civilian
Police Academy Alumni Association the Crime Prevention Unit
promotes community involvement
through the Neighborhood Watch
program. Who knows the goings
on in a neighborhood better that
the people who live there. This
program is a great way to meet
your neighbors, learn about crime
prevention techniques and help
to create a safer community. Call

come out and explain the process
of starting a Neighborhood Watch,
the duties of the participants, what
to look for and give you some
ideas for your meetings.

MEXICAN BEEF AND TORTILLAS
8 (6-inch) corn tortillas
1 (17-oz.) pkg. refrigerated beef
pot roast with juices
1 (14½ -oz.) can diced tomatoes
with green chilies
1 green sweet pepper, cut into
strips
1 lime, cut into wedges
Dairy sour cream (optional)
Fresh cilantro sprigs (optional)

2. Microwave beef according to
package directions. Meanwhile,
place un-drained tomatoes in small
saucepan; heat through.
3. Remove meat, reserving juices.
Cut in slices. Serve on warmed
tortillas with tomatoes and green
pepper strips. Pass lime wedges,
sour cream, and cilantro. Drizzle
reserved juices.
1. Wrap tortillas in microwavesafe paper towels. Microwave on
100% power (high) 45 to 60 seconds or until warm. Cover; set

2 medium plum tomatoes, seeded

wrap. Chill up to 1 hour. Serve
with tortilla chips. Make 2 cups

2. Note: For a kicked up version
of this guacamole, stir in one or
more of the following: 1 seeded,
finely chopped jalapeno Chile
pepper; ¼ cup sour cream; ¼ cup
snipped fresh cilantro; ¼ teaspoon
ground cumin; and/or 1/8 teaspoon
cayenne pepper.
CREAMY CHICKEN ENCHILADAS
½ pound skinless, boneless
chicken breasts
4 cups torn fresh spinach or ½
of one 10-ounce package frozen
chopped spinach, thawed and
well-drained
1 (8-ounce) carton light dairy sour
cream
¼ cup plain fat-free yogurt
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
¼ teaspoon ground cumin
¼ teaspoon salt
½ cup fat-free milk
1 (4-ounce) can diced green chili
peppers, drained
6 (7-inch) flour tortillas
1/3 cup shredded reduced-fat
cheddar or Monterey Jack Cheese
(1½ ounces)
Chopped tomato or salsa (optional)
Thinly sliced green onions (optional)
¼ cup thinly sliced green onions
1. In a 3-quart saucepan place
chicken in enough water to cover. Bring to boiling; reduce heat.
Cover and simmer about 15 minutes or until chicken is no longer pink. Remove chicken from
saucepan. When cool enough,
use a fork to shred chicken into
bite-size pieces. (You should have
about 1½ cup) Set aside.

spinach in a steamer basket over
boiling water.
Reduce heat.
Steam, covered, for 3 to 5 minutes
or until tender. (Or, cook in a small
amount of boiling water, covered,
for 3 to 5 minutes) Drain well.
3. In a large bowl combine chicken, spinach, and green onions; set
aside. In a bowl combine sour
cream, yogurt, flour, cumin, and
salt. Stir in milk and chili peppers.
Divide sauce in half. Set one portion aside.
4. For filling, combine one portion of the sauce and the chickenspinach mixture. Divide the filling
among the tortillas. Roll up tortillas. Place, seam side down, in
an un-greased 2-quart rectangular
baking dish.
5. Spoon reserved portion of sauce
over tortillas. Bake uncovered in
a 350ºF oven about 25 minutes
or until heated through. Sprinkle
with cheese; let stand for 5 minutes. Transfer to a serving plat-
ter. To serve, if desired, garnish
with chopped tomato or salsa and
additional green onion. Makes 6
enchiladas.
6. Make-Ahead Tip: After filling
the tortillas and placing them in the
baking dish, cover baking dish and
chill for up to 24 hours. Store the
reserved sauce separately in a covered container and chill. To serve,
bake uncovered as above except
add 10 to 15 minutes to cooking
time or until heated through.
MOJITO SPARKLER
6 fresh mint leaves
1½ to 2 jiggers (2 to 3 ounces)
gold rum
1-teaspoon limejuice
2 teaspoons superfine sugar
Ice
Club soda
1. Crush leaves in the bottom of a
tall glass. Pour in rum, limejuice,
and sugar. Add ice, stir and top
with club soda. Makes 1 serving.
