Pastoral Council Fr. Lee Fangmeyer, Chair Amy Tolan, President Financial Council Joe Gomez, Chairman DEADLINE FOR BULLETIN SUBMISSIONS: Deadline is 5 days before publication. Please email: [email protected] Dedication of the Lateran Basilica 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Nov. 9, 2014 From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Friends, Saturday In this month of November we think more of the communion of saints and how we are united by faith to those who have gone before us. We can pray for them and they for us. They continue to be witnesses to us. One of these is Monsignor Lorenzo Albacete, a noted priest, theologian, lecturer, author and television personality, who died on October 24, 2014. Sunday In a letter, Fr. Julian Carron described Msgr. Albacete in this way: “Therefore, Pope Francis’ words from Evangelii Gaudium are befitting our dearest Lorenzo: ‘Christians have the duty to proclaim the Gospel without excluding anyone, not as one who imposes a new obligation, but rather as one who shares a joy, points out a beautiful horizon, offers a desirable banquet. The Church does not grow by proselytism but ‘by attraction.’” He was undoubtedly so captivating that he immediately became friends with anyone he met, because he was showing the beauty and usefulness of faith for facing life’s needs.” Albacete was friends with Pope John Paul II. In 1997 he was part of a PBS documentary. Following is an excerpt of "John Paul II: The Millennial Pope: "... The obstacles to faith, among them perhaps the most serious one is the loss of the capacity to encounter or to experience reality that you know doesn't originate (See Fr. Albacete over these past 20 years. He was instrumental in beginning and leading many of my priest retreats as well as many other symposiums and talks, retreats and days of reflection. As many who were able to be in his presence I was struck by not just his intelligence and humor, but by his profound love of Christ. He was completely taken by one thing only: the recognition of the Mystery in our midst. His last words were all about the Incarnation and that Jesus is coming. I felt a tremendous friendship with him the year my friend Fr. Bill Finch died. Lorenzo simply looked at me with the deep understanding of the pain but also faith in Someone else. He was also experiencing in his life great suffering, a share in the Cross. He helped me embrace mine. 8:00 AM 5:00 PM U.S. Veterans (l & d) 12:30 PM People of the Parish 5:00 PM Nilsa Maldonado (d) 6:30 AM Souls in Purgatory (d) 8:00 AM Naiyah I. Lee’s Letter (continued from pg. 1): inside of you…..Do we believe that something new can exist? The Pope is convinced that the biggest threat not only to faith but to human survival at the end of this age and the beginning of the new one is the loss of that ability to experience an encounter with the really and truly other and thus establish a dialogue, establish solidarity, because that is the key phrase to him. The human being cannot be free, cannot live fully if it is not in solidarity with others. Inability to grasp otherness is to him not only the biggest obstacle to faith but really the biggest obstacle to human life and human survival. That is why in the end he'll have to say, "Look, it is only through an encounter with another that you can have faith." In the end what the Pope offers or proclaims is the possibility of encountering the human face of the mystery called God which he believes is the face of Jesus Christ. ..." http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/pop e/interviews/albacete.html For me, Msgr. Albacete was that kind of encounter. Thank you Lorenzo! His last words were, “You see, Jesus always comes. He wants to be with us.” Thank you for showing us the joy of his presence. Fr. DID YOU KNOW that the Mother Seton Alternative Christmas program gives us an opportunity to reclaim the true meaning of Christmas by really doing something to reduce the commercial nature of our celebration. Instead of spending time and too much money buying things for loved ones who already have everything, we can give gifts of sharing to those who have little or nothing in honor of our loved ones. We can find the Christ child in those around us who are in need and can celebrate His birth by supporting our local service agencies in their mission of comfort and healing. SECCIÓN EN ESPAÑOL DEDICACION DE LA BASILICA DE LETRAN (Ciclo A) 9 de noviembre del 2014 Diversas culturas hispanas, pero «Un solo Señor, una sola fe» (Cf. Ef 4,5). Me ayudó a llevar mi cruz. Joe Breighner’s More Reflections Along A Country Road “More Reflections Along A Country Road” by Father Joe Breighner “Minute Meditations for Everyday” Good Example The most effective way we share our scriptures, our understanding of the sacraments, our prayer life and our image of God, is by how we live. As someone has profoundly put it, “People may not always believe what you say, but they will always believe what you do.” So our effort is to live as Jesus asked us to live when He gave the criteria for entering the kingdom of God, “I was hungry and you fed me; thirsty and you gave me something to drink; naked and you clothed me; in prison and you visited me; a stranger and you took me in” Put simply, the best way to show our belief in God is through the sermon of our lives. When we treat the least person the way we treat God, then we become believable and God becomes visible. Father Joe Breighner To Order A Copy of Fr.
