RIGHT TO LIFE MARCH The annual March For Life takes place on January 22, 2014 in Washington D.C. This march is not a protest. It is a witness to the goodness of every human life. It is testimony that life is worth protecting. Unfortunately, on January 22, 1973 the nine male judges of the Supreme Court, by a vote of 7-3 went against the first principle on which this country was built – the right to life. Without a right to life there are no other rights. Sadly we have seen the effects of this decision. Supporters of abortion promised that no child would be born unwanted – not true. They said women would achieve economic parity – not true. Every human life has value and dignity worth protecting, educating, caring for and loving. Parishioners are joining with the parish of St. John’s Parish in Townsend MA and going down to Washington to take part in this great event. Specifically, NFP is the title for the moral, natural and healthy, modern and scientifically reliable methods of family planning. These methods teach married couples how to identify and understand their combined signs of fertility. This information then helps married couples plan to achieve or postpone a pregnancy. NFP is morally good because it helps married couples respect God’s design for married love. Learn about Natural Family Planning at Saint Mary's Church on the following Tuesdays at 7 PM: March 11, May 13. Please register in advance with Jennifer Acuña at 401-9969028 [email protected]. FIAT! A GROUP FOR DISCERNING WOMEN Fiat is a discernment group for single women considering a vocation to religious life. They meet on the last Wednesday of every month. The next meeting is on January 29 from 7:00- 9:00 PM at Our Lady Help of Christians Church, 573 Washington Street, Newton. For more information contact Sr. Marian Batho at 617-746-5637 or email [email protected]. SCRIPTURE OF THE WEEK We encourage everyone to continue reading the Acts of the Apostles this week … ACTS OF THE APOSTLES - CHAPTER 10 PART 1 The Vision of Cornelius. Now in Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion of the Cohort called the Italica, devout and God-fearing along with his whole household, who used to give alms generously to the Jewish people and pray to God constantly. One afternoon about three o’clock, he saw plainly in a vision an angel of God come in to him and say to him, “Cornelius.” He looked intently at him and, seized with fear, said, “What is it, sir?” He said to him, “Your prayers and almsgiving have ascended as a memorial offering before God. Now send some men to Joppa and summon one Simon who is called Peter. He is staying with another Simon, a tanner, who has a house by the sea.” When the angel who spoke to him had left, he called two of his servants and a devout soldier from his staff, explained everything to them, and sent them to Joppa. ATTACKS ON GOD Protestant pastor murdered in India An Evangelical Protestant pastor has been slain by unidentified assailants in India’s state of Andhra Pradesh, in the latest of a series of acts of violence against that country’s Christian minority. The pastor, identified as Rev Sanjeevulu, was stabbed to death by 4 men who came to his home in Vikarabad. He was rushed to a hospital but pronounced dead. Police have not yet determined a motive for the killing or identified any suspects. QUESTIONS & ANSWERS ABOUT THE CREED Last year we began including questions and answers about each line of the Creed to remind us what we mean when we profess our faith. We will continue to do so until we reach the end of the prayer. From the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church… • Why is the Church the ‘people of God’? The Church is the ‘people of God’ because it pleased God to sanctify and save men not in isolation but by making them into one people gathered together by the unity of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. • What are the characteristics of the people of God? One becomes a member of this people through faith in Christ and Baptism. This people has for its origin God the Father; for its head Jesus Christ; for its hallmark the dignity and freedom of the sons of God; for its law the new commandment of love; for its mission to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world; and for its destiny the Kingdom of God, already begun on earth. • In what way does the people of God share in the three functions of Christ as Priest, Prophet and King? The people of God participate in Christ's priestly office insofar as the baptized are consecrated by the Holy Spirit to offer spiritual sacrifices. They share in Christ’s prophetic office when with a supernatural sense of faith they adhere unfailingly to that faith and deepen their understanding and witness to it. The people of God share in his kingly office by means of service, imitating Jesus Christ who as King of the universe made himself the servant of all, especially the poor and the suffering. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY FOR 2014 Please consider joining us in the After School Program to help children with their homework. The homework time is from 3:00-4:15 PM, and you may volunteer one day a week or more if you’d like. You don’t need teaching experience to do this volunteer work. The children benefit greatly from having someone to guide them through getting their homework done. The volunteers benefit not only from serving the Lord in this way, but also from the sense of community they form with the other adult volunteers. If you would like to join us, please contact Susan Brennan at 781-577-2262 or [email protected].
