September 25, 2016 Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time This past weekend, the Latino community celebrated the sacrament of baptism, with 13 children being baptized. ADMINISTRATION pastor’s note BUSINESS OFFICE UPDATE Parables demand careful reading. There is little detailed description about the characters in today’s gospel. It is never said that the rich man is wicked. We are never told that Lazarus badgers him for help which he actively refuses. Between them, however, lies an abyss that cannot be bridged. It is the abyss of unawareness and self-sufficiency. The anesthetized conscience of the rich man is no longer touched by the reproach of poverty. In our ongoing efforts to improve the financial practices and controls at St. Pius X, we are pleased to announce that we have retained the services of Leonard Vuylsteke as our acting Chief Financial Officer. Leonard comes to us after nearly 16 years at the Archdiocese of Portland where he served as the Chief Financial Officer until the end of 2011. We are confident that Leonard’s expertise will be of great benefit as we move forward in faith towards the future financial health of the parish. Please be sure to make Leonard feel welcome if you see him on campus. Thus we can understand Jesus’ warnings: “How hard it will be for the rich to go into the kingdom of God. Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through a needle’s eye than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven” (Luke 18:25). Sometimes we read on the door of elegant buildings: “No soliciting”. What if that prohibition were to be found reversed at the threshold of the kingdom, “The rich need not apply.” That is the picture Luke seems to paint. NO COFFEE AND DONUTS SEPTEMBER 25TH Instead, please support the Knights of Columbus and enjoy participating at their Breakfast Cafe after the 7:30 am, 8:45 am and 11:00 am Masses. Coffee and Donuts will resume October 2nd. Is there no redemption then for the rich? At the door of the kingdom there are no rich and poor. Both are saved by the word of God. That word reveals to men and women their radical interdependence. The selfsufficiency of the rich can blind them to the Lazarus at their gates. The affluence of our society can close our ears to the cries of the third world. In neglecting their needs, we exclude ourselves from the table of the kingdom. CATHOLIC INQUIRY DINNER SCRIP GIFT CARD PROGRAM This is your invitation! Are you interested in learning about Catholicism or becoming Catholic? Or can you invite someone who is? Come to our Catholic Inquiry dinner, Tuesday, September 27, at 6:30 pm, in the Community Center. RSVP on our website at rcia.stpius.org, ideally by the Friday before. Spouses, partners, children and guests are all welcome. Afterwards, we will have weekly meetings from 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm. We also make arrangements for people who cannot attend on Tuesdays. Questions? Call Bob Little, (503) 213-1447. The easiest way to budget and plan your monthly Scrip gift card purchases (and thereby maximize your fundraising dollars for St. Pius X!) is to complete and submit a Scrip Standing Order Form. You can pick one up from the Scrip Seller. When you fill out your Standing Order Form, you simply list all of the Scrip Gift Cards (merchant names and denominations) that you would like to receive either once or twice monthly. No need to prepay your order, you may pay when you pick-up. Most families include their “staple” purchases on their Standing Order Form, like grocery, gas, Starbucks, movie theater, favorite restaurant, and fastfood. Plus, now that Costco is accepting VISA, be sure to include VISA Scrip gift cards on your order, and even your Costco purchases can benefit St. Pius X! A realization no matter how different we are, we are still one in the same in the eyes of Christ. We are his beloved.” –Retreatant Men’s Retreat 2015 ACTS Retreats --- Frequently Asked Questions What is an ACTS Retreat? An ACTS lay retreat is held for three days and three nights and is presented by fellow parishioners. The retreat begins on Thursday evening and ends the following Sunday at a Mass celebrated with the parish community. Retreats for men and retreats for women are given separately. The focus for the weekend is Adoration, Community, Theology and Service from which the ACTS acronym is derived. The retreat takes on the traditions and atmosphere of the parish community sponsoring it. The retreat facilitates the attainment of a new and/or deeper relationship with the Lord through: Adoration - The call by, acceptance of, and response to God Community - The love and caring of each other Theology - The study of God through scripture and the Catholic Faith Service - To God and His people Each retreat is conducted by a retreat "team" composed of 30-40 individuals who have attended prior ACTS retreats. Chosen by the retreat Director, the team organizes the retreat, conducts the retreat activities and ministers to the needs of the retreatants during the retreat weekend. What is the purpose of an ACTS retreat? To allow each retreatant to experience God's love and joy and deepen their faith in Him. To allow all to return to their lives with a deeper love for God, each other and a desire to become more involved in their faith community and serve others. Why attend an ACTS retreat? It is a powerful and enduring personal conversion experience. Over the weekend, retreatants experience a better understanding of God’s love and His presence in their lives and the journey that He has planned for each of us. Retreatants come away with a new or renewed dedication to live their lives as Jesus did by recognizing the needs of those around us and of our obligation, as followers of Christ, to help meet those needs. Questions: Please contact our Co-Directors Matt Anderson, [email protected] or Steve Franey, [email protected].
