Together with St. Francis of Assisi, she is one of the most popular saints in the history of the church. Pope Pius X called her "the greatest saint of modern times". The Pro-Life Committee and the Knights of Columbus invite you to the Rosary Rally this Sunday, May 17, at 10:15 a.m. at the Shrine of the Unborn. If the weather is inclement, the rosary rally will be held in Craven Hall. Please help us pray for an end to abortion. Jesus expects his disciples to walk in his footsteps. But Jesus always invites us to share in his ministry, never forces us. At the Ascension, Jesus commissioned his disciples to proclaim the gospel. At first this might seem an impossible commission: how can we expect to fill Jesus’ footsteps? On our own authority we cannot preach the gospel, we can fill Jesus’ footsteps only when we hear “the instructions given through the Spirit.” What an awesome honor it is to be disciples of Christ – by returning to his rightful place at the hand of God, Jesus entrusts his mission to us. (Living Liturgy, p.136) Congratulations “Father” Roy! On May 30th Roylan Recio will be ordained to the priesthood of Jesus Christ in the Diocese of Colorado Springs. It has been a long and difficult road. Please pray for him as he begins his new life as a priest. If you would like to congratulate him personally please write him at: Rev. Roylan Recio St. Francis of Assisi Church 2746 5th Street Castle Rock, CO 80104 Greetings and God’s Blessings to all at St. William Parish, my name is Jim Handerhan and I am so excited to be doing my diaconate internship with all of you in the upcoming months. I just wanted to write a few line by way of introduction. Let me just say first that I am probably a little older than the seminarians that you may have had assigned to your parish in the past. I am what the diocese likes to refer to as an “older vocation,” although I am not sure they mean this old. I am a lifelong Catholic, born and raised in New Jersey. I moved to Alabama in 1973 and have lived in the Birmingham area ever since. My home parish is St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, in Gardendale, Alabama. I was married for twenty-nine years to a very lovely lady who passed away in 2000. I have one son, Jay who is married to Rebecca, and I have three grandchildren, Sean (20), Katie (18), and Colin (13), all of whom live in the Fultondale area. Although I was resistant at first to God’s call, only because I did not feel worthy of such a call, He kept calling me and I finally entered the seminary in the fall of 2010. The seminary has been both challenging and rewarding and as I look back now it is hard to believe that five years have passed so quickly, but they have, and now I am on the verge of my diaconate ordination: (May 30th 2015, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Gardendale, Al., @ 5:00PM). While attending Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans, La., I have had past summer assignments at St. Elizabeth’s and St. Henry parishes in Gardendale and Warrior as well as St. Charles Borromeo and St. Joachim parishes in Jacksonville, Al. I have also participated in the Rome Experience during one of my summers. All of these assignments have been very rewarding and have helped to prepare me to be a servant of the Lord. I look forward to meeting all of you and to serving you in the near future. God Bless All of You. ~ Jim Handerhan A Prayer for our Graduates… Father, I have knowledge, so will You show me now, How to use it wisely and find a way somehow To make the world I live in a little better place, And make life with its problems a little bit easier to face. Grant me faith and courage and put purpose in my days, And show me how to serve Thee in effective ways. So my education, my knowledge and my skill May find their true fulfillment as I learn to do Thy will. And may I ever be aware in everything I do, That knowledge comes from learning, And wisdom comes from You.
