MOHAMED NAIEM was born in Port-Said on the northern
part of the Suez Canal.
Mohamed has demonstrated a rare talent for playing the n a y and ka w a la . These flutes are very
difficult to play and it is rare to find someone who plays both flutes with such precision and
talent and such soul-captivating spirituality.
Mohamed moved to Cairo and worked in night clubs with many of the well-known singers
and dancers on the club circuits. Hossam Ramzy kept hearing his name being mentioned by
various well-respected musicians such as OsamaDCBA
E I Hendy (one of Hossam's dearest friends
and musical collaborators) and when the right opportunity presented itself a meeting was
arranged. Mohamed has recorded on several of Hossam's prod~c~ons and has done live
Radio and TV recordings with the current best popular and Shaabi singers.
There are instruments in Egypt,

similar to the n a y, called 'S a la m ia '
and :A rg h o l', made from the same reed plant. They differ in the number of joints and length
as well as playing technique.
The notes produced by the n a y give us the Arabic scale in which the third and seventh are
quarter tones - a scale called 'ra st'. A n a y player can of course play any other scale required,
depending on his skill.
First steps for anyone interested in learning to play the n a y ...
• Hold the n a y's top edge to your lips, and then move its lower end slightly to the left or to
the right, whichever is more comfortable.
o
With semi-closed lips blow a strong fine 'breath' of air; make sure the air stream collides
with the outer edge of the instrument. Do not place your fingers on the holes at this stage.
Blow with a normal breath, neither violently nor continuously, to avoid getting tired (and
dizzy) quickly. Try blowing several times until a note comes out.
o Now begin to put your fingers or the holes. You will find that the notes now have changed.
The different ways of putting your fingers on the holes will produce different scales.
Note: You will find that the third and the seventh notes are quarter tones, which gives you
the basic scale of the nay calledfedcbaZYXWVUTSRQPONMLKJIHGFEDCBA

solehem Talent und mit soleh fesselnder Gefuhlstiefe spielt.
Mohamed zog nach Kairo und arbeitete in Nachtklubs mit vielen bekannten Sangern und
Tanzern. Hossam Rarnzy horte seinen Namen immer wieder von verschiedenen
hochgeachteten Musikern wie z. B. Osama EI Hendy, einern von Hossams engsten Freunden
und musikalischen Mitarbeitern, bis sich schliel3lich eine Gelegenheit bot und ein Treffen
zustandekam. Mohamed spielte seither in verschiedenen Produktionen Hossams und machte
Live-Aufnahmen fur Radio und Fernsehen mit den besten derzeitigen Pop- und ShaabiSangern.

Die Nay (Arabische Rohrflore)
Die N tfY ist ein sehr alres, einfaches Blasinstrument aus Rohr. Man sagt, es wurde erstmals
von den Agyptern in der Antike verwendet. Es gilt als eines der altesten agyptischen und arabischen Instrumente. Der Klang der N tfY soil psychologische und spirituelle Bediirfnisse
stillen.
Die N tfY wird aus festem Rohr hergestellt, das im oder nahe am Wasser wiichst. Eine N tfY hat
neun Knoten und ist zwischen 37 und 80 cm lang. Die Tonhohe der N tfY wird von ihrer
Lange und ihrer Bohrung bestimmt.
Es gibt sieben verschiedene Arten der N tfY . Die wichtigsten sind die N tfY AI D o ko h ', N tfY ,AI
und N tfY ,AI Hosseiny'. Die N tfY AI D o ko h ' wird am haufigsten gespielt.
In Agypten gibt es ahnliche Instrumente wie die N ,!)" die ,S a la m ia ' und .A rg b o t', die aus derselben Rohrpflanze hergestellt werden. Sie unterscheiden sich von der Nay in der Anzahl der
Knoten und der Lange sowie in der Spieltechnik.
Die Tone der N tfY ergeben die arabische Tonleiter, in der der dritte und vierre Ton
Vierteltone sind - eine Tonleirer, die .R a st' genannt wird. Ein N tfY S p ieler kann nariirlich, je
nach seinem Konnen, auch jede andere erforderliche Tonleiter spielen.

Erste Schritte fur jemanden, der die N '!)' spielen lernen rnochte:
• Halten Sie den oberen Rand der N '!)' an lhre Lippen, dann schwenken Sie das untere Ende
etwas nach links oder rechts, je nachdern, wie es bequemer ist.
• Blasen Sie mit halb geschlossenen Lippen einen schmalen, kraftigen Luftstrom; achten Sie
darauf, daB der Luftstrom gegen die Aul3enkante der Nay geblasen wird. Lcgen Sie die Finger
zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch nicht auf die Locher.
Blasen Sie mit Ihrem normalen Atem, weder zu stark noch zu lange, darnit Sie nicht schnell
mude (oder schwindelig) werden. Versuchen Sie, mehrmals zu blasen, bis Sie einen Ton
herausbringen.
• Jetzt legen Sie die Finger auf die Locher. Sie werden merken, daf die Tone sich verandern,
Durch die unterschiedlichen Arten, wie Sie die Finger auf die Locher legen, erhalten Sie verschiedene Tonleitern.

Mohamed Naiem est ne a Port Said au nord du
canal de Suez. Mohamed fait preuve d'un talent
exceptionnel aux n'!Y et kaw ola. Ces flutes sont particulierement difficiles a jouer, et il est rare de trouver
un flutiste qui puisse maitriser ces deux instruments
avec une telle precision, un tel talent et qui ravit par
la delicatesse etheree de son jeu,
Mohamed partit pour Ie Caire, O U il joua dans des
night-dubs aux cotes de la plupart des grands artistes
de la chanson et de la danse en cabaret. Hossam
Ramzy entendait regulierernent divers musiciens de
renom, comme Osama EI Hendy (un des collaborateurs et amis les plus chers d'Hossam), mentionner Ie
nom de Mohamed Naiem. L'occasion voulue se
presenta en fin et une rencontre des deux artistes fut
organisee. Mohamed a participe a I'enregistrement de
plusieurs albums produits par Hossam Ramzy et a
enregistre en direct a la radio et a la television avec les
vedettes actuelles de la chanson populaire et du sb a a b i
(musique populaire egyprienne).

Le Nay (flute arabe en roseau)
/la y est un tres ancien instrument a vent simple en roseau. Selon certaines sources, il vit Ie

jour en Egypte antique. Cette flute est consideree comme Ie plus ancien instrument d'Egypre
et du monde arabe. La "voix" du /la y, selon certains, assouvit les besoins psychologiques et
spiriruels.
Le /la y est fait de roseau rigide d'une longueur couvrant plusieurs nceuds. Le roseau est une
plante qui pousse dans ou pres de I'eau. Cet instrument mesure entre 37 et 80 em de long et
couvre neuf nceuds, La longueur et Ie calibre de la flute deterrninenr sa tonalite.

Certains instruments egyptiens ressemblent au It'!). II s'agit des sa la m ia et a rg h o l, egalement
faits de roseau. lis different du nay par Ie nombre de nceuds, la longueur ainsi que la technique
de jeu.
Le n '!) produit les notes composantes de la gamme arabe, qui comporte des quarts de ton en
troisierne et septieme echelons. II s'agit de la gamme ra st. Le n '!) permet bien sur, selon les
cornpetences du musicien, d'interprerer route autre gamme voulue.
Voici quelques conseils pour ceux qui souhaitent apprendre a jouer du n a y :
o Posez Ie bord superieur du n a y contre les levres, puis deplacez legerement Ie bas de la flute
vers la gauche ou la droite pour obtenir une position confortable.
o Levres mi-closes, soufflez un puissant et mince filet d'air. Assurez-vous de diriger I'air contre Ie bord de I'instrument. A ce stade, ne placez pas vas doigts sur les trous.
Soufflez dans l'instrument tout en respirant normalement, c'est a dire pas trop fort ou sans
arret, vous eviterez ainsi de v o u s fatiguer rapidement (et eventuellement de ressentir des vertiges). Essayez de souffler a plusieurs reprises [usqu'a ce que vous produisiez une note.
o A present en mettant vos doigts sur les trous, vous remarquerez que les notes changent. En
variant Ie positionnement des doigts sur les trous de la flute on obtient differentes gammes.

• Sujete eI borde superior del n q y contra 105 labios, y Iuego mueva su extremo inferior ligeramente a Ia izquierda a a Ia derecha, segun se encuentre mas comedo.
• Con 105 Iabios semicerrados, sople un 'alien to' fuerte y fino de aire, asegunindose de que eI
caudal de aire choque contra el borde exterior del instrumento. En este punto no coloque aun
los dedos sobre los orificios.
Sople con aliento normal, ni violenta ni continuamente, con el fin de evitar cansarse (y
marearse) rapidamente. Intente soplar varias veces hasta conseguir una nota.
