Principal’s Notes
Hello Thunderbolts! The year has gone by quickly and it is hard to believe that we
are already starting the 4th quarter of school. With Spring Break behind us, and everyone
being well rested, it time to look forward to all that still remains to be done, not the least of
which is SOL’s. We also have numerous spring concerts, including jazz band - April 19;
7th and 8th grade guitar - May 3; 7th grade band - May 10 (this will be held in the DHS
auditorium at 7:30 pm); 7th grade chorus - May16; 6th/7th/8th grade orchestra - May17; 8th
grade chorus - May 21; 8th grade band - May 23; 6th grade chorus - May 29 and 6th grade
band - May 31. Please make it a point to attend at least one of them and see the results of
our talented students’ practice and hard work throughout this school year.
I want to thank all the staff, students, and parents who participated in the Faculty
Basketball game in February. A good time was had by everyone and we raised $651 for the
Seneca Share Fund that aids our community families in need. It makes me proud to see the
generosity of our students and the support that we receive for our fundraising events. I
would like to applaud the cast and crew of Gone With the Breeze on a job well done. I say
it every year--we have a talented bunch of students here and their hard work and dedication
shows with every performance. Also, congratulations to Mrs. Phillip for receiving the quarterly “Thunderbolt Award” from the PTO. Mrs. Phillip was nominated for taking her students to the Kennedy Center for the Tuba Christmas performance and for the extra help she
provided in preparing students for the All District Band competition.
In April, May and June, when our minds are on playing golf or going to the beach,
we need to work hard and stay focused on our school work. Keeping that in mind, the SOL
testing window is May 1st – June 1st and the Final Exams for high school credit classes are
June 5th – June 8th. Please schedule any time off accordingly and remind your student to
get plenty of rest and to start their morning off with a good breakfast to be at their best for
school and testing.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the parents who have volunteered their valuable time for the school this year at Seneca Ridge. Your time, energy and
hard work have certainly contributed to our school’s success. Thank you! To show our appreciation, you are invited to join us on April 26th for a Volunteer Breakfast. Details for the
time and RSVP information are on page 3. We look forward to seeing all of you here.
Finally, please note the date of the April principal’s coffee is Thursday, the 19th
instead of the usual second Tuesday of the month. We did so to accommodate our guest
speaker, Deputy First Class James Spurlock from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office,
Crime Prevention Unit. He will give a presentation on internet safety and how to protect
your children from internet predators. His presentation will be well worth your time, so
please plan to attend.

Mensaje Del Principal
¡Hola Thunderbolts! El año se ha ido rápido y es difícil creer que ya estamos empezando el cuarto trimestre de escuela.
Después de las vacaciones de primavera y ya todos descansados, es momento de ver todo lo que aún queda por hacer, siendo SOL
algo de lo más importante. También contamos con varios conciertos de primavera, incluido el de la banda de jazz el 19 de abril; de
guitarra de 7° y 8° grado el 3 de mayo; la banda de 7° grado el 10 de mayo (esto se llevará a cabo en el auditórium DHS a las 7:30
p.m.); el coro de 7° grado el 16 de mayo; la orquesta de 6°/7°/8° grados el 17 de mayo; el coro de 8° grado el 21 de mayo; la banda
de 8° Grado el 23 de mayo; el coro de 6° grado el 29 de mayo, y la banda de 6° grado el 31 de mayo. Haga el compromiso de asistir
por lo menos a uno de ellos para ver los resultados de la práctica de nuestros talentosos estudiantes y del arduo trabajo a lo largo de
este año escolar.
Quiero agradecer a todo el personal, a los estudiantes y los padres que participaron en el juego de baloncesto de docentes en
febrero. Todos disfrutamos de un momento agradable y recaudamos $651 para el Seneca Share Fund que ayuda a las familias necesitadas de nuestra comunidad. Me siento orgulloso de la generosidad de nuestros estudiantes y del apoyo que recibimos para
nuestros eventos de recaudación de fondos. Me gustaría felicitar al elenco y el equipo de Gone With the Breeze por un trabajo bien
hecho. Digo esto todos los años: tenemos un talentoso grupo de estudiantes y su arduo trabajo y dedicación se pueden apreciar en
cada actuación. También felicitamos a la Sra. Phillip por recibir el “Premio Thunderbolt” trimestral de la organización de padres y
maestros. La Sra. Phillip fue nominada por llevar a sus estudiantes al Kennedy Center para la presentación de Tuba Christmas y por

En abril, mayo y junio, cuando estamos pensando en jugar golf o en ir a la playa, debemos de trabajar duro y mantenernos

exámenes finales para las clases con créditos en la escuela secundaria son del 5 al 8 de junio. Programe cualquier momento libre
como corresponda y recuérdele a su estudiante que descanse lo suficiente y que empiece la mañana con un buen desayuno para estar
en su mejor condición para la escuela y para los exámenes.
Me gustaría aprovechar esta oportunidad para agradecer a todos los padres que dedicaron su valioso tiempo para el trabajo
voluntario en la escuela durante este año en Seneca Ridge. Su tiempo, energía y trabajo sin duda contribuyeron al éxito de nuestra

They performed at Heritage on Saturday, February 18,
2012.
Last year was an historic event for the Orchestra
program here at Seneca Ridge. The Orchestra participated in the District 16 (Loudoun County) Orchestra Assessment for the very first time and received a rating of
"Superior Ensemble." On Friday, March 9th students for
SRMS performed and received a rating of “Excellent”.

STEP-UP LOUDOUN: HEALTH FAIR
Where: Dominion High School

Join the Dominion High School Student Council Association for an event that addresses the issue of childhood obesity and promotes a healthy lifestyle within the community. The two hour event will be divided into
30 minute sections. Two of the sections are for activities: Yoga, Martial Arts, Crossfit, and Dance. The other
two sections will be devoted to a keynote speaker and booths set up by local health businesses, vendors, nutritionists, personal trainers, and informational booths set up by the SCA.
The SCA is looking for donations and vendors to participate in the event. If you are interested please contact

PTO OUTLOOK
Your SRMS Parent Teacher Organization at work…….
Thunderbolt Outdoor Cafe is coming! Through the generosity of several parents, fifteen durable outdoor tables have been
purchased for Seneca Ridge. Once the tables are installed, every student will have a chance to eat lunch outdoors on a rotating
basis. We would like to thank Jeffrey Humpton, a former SRMS student who will be coordinating the site work and table assembly for his Eagle Scout Project. Once the Thunderbolt Outdoor Cafe is completed it will be a wonderful addition to our middle
school. A very big thank you to all who are involved with the project and to those who help raised and donated funds for the project.
As we move forward towards the fourth quarter, it is time to start thinking about the next year’s PTO board. If you have
never volunteered before, it is a great way to get involved in your student’s education and to make a difference within the school.
With enough people, jobs could be shared and, well, just make the job even more fun! Please consider running for a board position
(President, VP, Secretary or Treasurer) and making a difference. If you don’t have time to be a board member, we also have opportunities for you to claim ownership of an event, project, or just a piece of the PTO fun! Questions can be sent to Lisa Toohey at

Organizacion de Padres y Profesores que Trabajan para la Escuela (SRMS)….
¡Ya llega el Thunderbolt Outdoor Cafe! Gracias a la generosidad de varios padres, se adquirieron quince mesas resistentes
de exterior para Seneca Ridge. Cuando las mesas estén instaladas, todos los estudiantes podrán almorzar al aire libre en forma rotativa. Queremos agradecer a Jeffrey Humpton, un exalumno de la escuela media Seneca Ridge, que coordinará el trabajo en el lugar
y la instalación de las mesas para su proyecto Eagle Scout. Cuando el Thunderbolt Outdoor Cafe esté finalizado, se convertirá en
un maravilloso aporte a nuestra escuela media. Queremos expresar nuestro mayor agradecimiento a todas aquellas personas que
participaron en este proyecto y a quienes ayudaron a recaudar y donaron fondos para el mismo.
A medida que nos acercamos al cuarto trimestre, es hora de comenzar a pensar en la junta de la Asociación de Padres y
Maestros del próximo año. Si nunca se ofreció como voluntario, ésta es una excelente forma de involucrarse en la educación de sus
hijos y de marcar una diferencia dentro de la escuela. Cuando se cuenta con suficientes personas, se puede compartir el trabajo y,
por supuesto, hacer que el trabajo sea simplemente más divertido. Piense en postularse para un cargo en la junta (Presidente, Vicepresidente, Secretario o Tesorero) y marcar una diferencia. Si no tiene tiempo para ser miembro de la junta, también ofrecemos la
oportunidad de que usted se haga cargo de un evento, un proyecto o una pequeña parte de la diversión en la Asociación de Padres y

STUDENT-FACULTY BASKETBALL GAME
On February 17th, students and faculty came together and competed in a spirited game of basketball to raise funds for the Seneca Shares Fund. The fund is used to help students in need
within our Seneca community. The faculty won the game, but
the students made them work hard for the win. Thank you to all
the parents, faculty and students who volunteered to make the
event a success. Thank you to Chick-fil-A at Sugarland Crossing for their generosity in donating coupons, food, and bringing
the cow to cheer everyone on. A special thank you goes to Denise McKenna, Kristin Lowery, and Nicole Herndon for organizing the event.

BASEBALL TEAM PLAYS FOR THE CURE
On Thursday, May 3, 2012, the Dominion High School baseball team will be holding a Play for the Cure
game against Millbrook High School at 6 pm. This game is in honor of the mother of a former Dominion High
School student and baseball player, who lost her battle with breast cancer. Both teams will be wearing pink
shirts donated by Cheers Sports in Ashburn, VA to increase the awareness of breast cancer.

On March 17, 2012 Julia Baek, Katerina Banks, Janne Calleson, Nathan Chong,
Anthony Ellis, Brandon Ellis, Rebka Ephrem, Bharut Jain, Corey Kim, Anika Maan,
Allison Mescall, Ian Mescall, and Mikey Mulhearn attended the 4th annual UVA Classics Day.
The participated in a certamen (Latin competition), watched an adaptation of a Roman comedy, made theater masks, and took part in mock games of the Circus Maximus.
Each of the students not only had a good time, but they learned a little more about
the Roman way of life and the culture of the time.

“Shine your Smile Day" is coming!
Seneca Ridge Middle School is hosting Smile Programs...the mobile dentists on
Wednesday, May 2, 2012.
We have invited Smile Programs to bring its comprehensive dental care services to
our school because we know how important good oral health is to our children's overall general health.
"We know that tooth decay is the most common chronic and infectious disease
among children," explained Margo Woll, D.D.S. and Marcy Borofsky, D.D.S., co-founders of
Smile Programs. "We also know poor oral health causes other problems in children, such as
diminished growth in toddlers, poor nutrition due to difficulty eating and an increase in bacteria in the blood and respiratory systems."
Additionally, the CDC reports that "more than 51 million school hours are lost each year because of dentalrelated illness." So maintaining good oral health keeps your child smiling...and in school.
Smile Programs will set up a mini-dental office in our building and can provide dental examinations, x-rays, cleanings,
fluoride treatments, and sealants (if needed). Where exams reveal decay, our dentists, with child's parental consent, will
provide fillings, pulpotomies, stainless steel crowns, and simple extractions where clinically indicated.
Smile Programs can provide preventive services to the children of the families who need financial assistance
and it has subsidized fees for those who choose to pay for the preventive care. No child is ever turned away from Smile
Programs because of financial need. Restorative care is available only where insurance coverage applies.
Signing up your children to see the Smile Programs team is an easy way to get necessary comprehensive dental
care. If you want your child to see the dentist on "Shine Your Smile Day," just fill out the permission slip that was sent
home with your child and return it to your child’s house office.

La Escuela Intermedia Seneca Ridge está patrocinando el Programa Sonrisa….los dentistas
móviles el miércoles, 2 de mayo de 2012.
Hemos invitado al Programa Sonrisa a traer su amplio servicio de cuidado dental a nuestra
escuela porque nosotros sabemos cuán importante es la salud oral de nuestros niños como su
salud en general.
"Sabemos que la descomposición del diente es la infección más común y crónica en los niños” explico Margo Woll, D.D.S. and Marcy Borofsky, D.D.S., cofundadores del Programa
de Sonrisas. "También sabemos que la salud oral causa otros problemas en los niños, tales
como la disminución del crecimiento, nutrición pobre debido a la dificultad para comer, y
también la incrementación de bacterias en la sangre y el sistema respiratorio”.
En adición, el CDC reporta que "más de 51 millones de horas escolares se pierden debido a enfermedades relacionadas con la dentadura.” Entonces, manteniendo una buena salud oral permite a tu hijo/a sonreir….en la escuela. El
Programa Sonrisa, tendrá una mini oficina dental en nuestro edificio y proveerá exanimación dental, rayos x, limpiezas,
tratamientos de fluoruro y selladores (si es necesario). Si los exámenes revelan decadencia nuestros dentistas proveerán
con el consentimiento de los padres, selladores, pulpotomías, coronas de acero inoxidable y extracciones sencillas.
El Programa de Sonrisa puede proveer servicios preventivos a los niños de familias que necesiten asistencia financiera y tiene costos de subsidiados para aquellos que escojan pagar por su cuidado preventivo. “El Programa Sonrisas jamás ha rechazado a ningún estudiante por necesidades financieras”. El cuidado restaurativo está disponible solamente donde la cobertura de seguros aplique.
Inscribiendo a su niño/a para ver al equipo de Programa de Sonrisa es una manera fácil para obtener un cuidado
dental completo. Si usted quiere que su hijo vea al dentista en "Shine Your Smile Day," se enviara a su casa la boleta de
permiso en conjunto con las calificaciones de su hijo/a, solo tiene que llenar el permiso y devolverlo a la oficina.
