l otoño es, como el 1 de enero, un comienzo. En este caso, el comienzo
del nuevo curso. Y también, como a principios de año, cada cual se llena
de propósitos que muchas veces terminarán olvidados en un cajón.
Esta vez no. Estamos en el Barrio de las Letras y el otoño invita a desperezarse. A los que habitamos estas calles nos gusta el otoño. Nos gusta el olor
a café, a lluvia, a teatro, a libro abierto y a butaca de cine. A reencuentros
tras el verano. A cena con amigos y a copas hasta la madrugada. A música
en vivo y a curiosear por las tiendas para encontrar ese algo especial, lo más
'cool' o lo más antiguo. El Barrio de las Letras da para eso y para mucho más.
Este número es una guía para disfrutar de la nueva temporada, de las
miles de propuestas que ofrece este rincón de Madrid. Traemos a Lope de

Autumn is, just as January 1st, a new
beginning. In this case, the start of the
academic year. And also, just as earlier
in the year, we all make resolutions
that will often end up forgotten.
Not this time. We are in the Barrio
de las Letras and autumn encourages
us all to go out. We, who live around
these streets, love autumn. We like
the smell of coffee, of rain, of theatre
plays, of open books and cinema seats.
Of meeting again once the summer
is over. Of having dinner with friends
and drinks until dawn. Of live music
and browsing through stores in pursuit
of the something special, the coolest
or the oldest thing. The Barrio de las
Letras offers that and much more.
This issue is a guide to enjoy the
new season and the thousands of
possibilities offered by this hideout of
Madrid, whether regarding Lope de

Mercado de las Ranas:
abrimos la nueva temporada
29 y 30 de noviembre:
‘Black Friday’ Ofertas
a discrección
Cada primer sábado de mes se
celebra el Mercado de las Ranas,
toda una cita tradicional en el barrio, a la que invitamos a nuestros
visitantes los días 4 de octubre, 1
de noviembre y 6 de diciembre. El
pasado 6 de septiembre, las fachadas se llenaron de globos amarillos,
muchos comercios sacaron su oferta a la calle y los visitantes pudieron
disfrutar de esta ocasión especial.
Otra iniciativa ubicada en el barrio
es la organización de la ruta teatralizada cuya, en principio, última
representación, está prevista para
el 11 de octubre (entrada gratuita,
imprescindible reservar con antelación en casamuseolopedevega@
madrid.org.
Los días 29 y 30 de noviembre se celebrará el
‘Black Friday’(‘Viernes Negro’), creado en Estados
Unidos para nombrar al día que abre la temporada
de compras navideñas, un día después del Día
de Acción de Gracias. Esta iniciativa se potencia
con importantes descuentos en los comercios,
lo que ha conseguido que, desde 2005, sea el
dia de mayor movimiento comercial de EE. UU.
Desde 2012 se empieza a implantar en España,
sobre todo por parte de las grandes superficies,
y desde el Barrio de las Letras se quiere adaptar
la fórmula, por segundo año consecutivo, al pequeño comercio y a nuestra forma de entender
la cultura y el ocio, con descuentos que oscilan
entre el 10 y el 50%, tanto en sus locales como
en los casos de poseer sitio web.

season has started
The Mercado de las Ranas is
held every first Saturday of
each month. It is a traditional
event in the neighbourhood to
which our visitors are invited
on Saturdays 4th october, 1st
november and 6th december. On 6th september, the façades were full of yellow balloons and many shops
exhibited their products in the streets, and visitors were able to enjoy this special
occasion. Another initiative in the neighbourhood is the dramatised tour, whose
last performance is so far scheduled for 11th october.
Black Friday will take place on 29th and 30th
november. This term was coined in the United States to name the opening day of the
Christmas shopping season, the day after
Thanksgiving Day. This initiative is reinforced
by significant discounts in shops, which since
2005 has turned this day into the one with
higher trade volumes in the USA.
Since 2012 it is being progressively implemented in Spain, particularly in shopping
centres. BDLL wants to adapt this approach,
for the second year in a row, to small businesses and to our own understanding of
culture and leisure, with discounts ranging
from 10% to 50% both in the establishments
and online, should they have one.
Encuentro de Cascos Históricos
Old Quarters Meeting
A finales de octubre, Madrid acogerá una nueva edición del Congreso de la Confederación Española de Cascos Históricos (COCAHI), organización que tiene la finalidad de establecer estrategias comunes
para el desarrollo de los centros históricos de las ciudades y pueblos
españoles. Formada por más de 10.000 establecimientos comerciales, la Confederación ayuda a potenciar tanto las actividades empresariales como la modernización de las infraestructuras y los servicios
en sus respectivos ámbitos urbanos, siendo conscientes de la gran
importancia de conservar el patrimonio de los cascos históricos.
In late October, Madrid will host a new edition of the Conference of the Spanish Association of Old Quarters (COCAHI).
The objective of the association is to set common strategies for
the development of old quarters of Spanish cities and villages.
Made up by more than 10,000 commercial establishments, the
Association helps to enhance both business activities and the
upgrade of facilities and services in their corresponding urban
areas, taking into account the importance of preserving the old
quarters heritage.

Las calles deben estar limpias
Cuestión
de movilidad
Desde el 16 hasta el 22 de septiembre, Europa se
movió de una forma más sostenible. O, al menos,
lo intentó. Ese fue el cometido de la Semana
Europea de la Movilidad (SEM), campaña coordinada en España por el Ministerio de Agricultura,
Alimentación y Medio Ambiente. En el caso del
Barrio de las Letras, el progreso en una movilidad
sostenible se evidencia en sus numerosas calles
peatonales, el acceso restringido de vehículos y
la posibilidad de recorrer sus calles en bicicleta o
segway. En el primer caso, destaca el éxito de la
iniciativa puesta en marcha por el Ayuntamiento
de Madrid Bicimad (en www.bicimad.com/mapa.
html se pueden consultar tanto las estaciones
de recogida de nuestra zona como las de toda
la ciudad) y, en el segundo, Seg City Tours ofrece
la oportunidad de disfrutar del barrio a bordo de
estos vehículos sostenibles.
A matter of transport
From 16th to 22nd september, Europe got
around in a more sustainable way. At least,
that was the intention. It was the goal
of the European Mobility Week (EMW), a
campaign that in Spain was coordinated
by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the
Environment. In the case of the Barrio de
las Letras, the progress of sustainable mobility is embodied in its multiple pedestrian
streets, the restricted access of vehicles and
the option to get about the streets by bike
or segway. As for the first case, it is worth
mentioning the success of the initiative
implemented by the City Council of Madrid,
BiciMad, (at www.bicimad.com/mapa.
html you can have a look at the bike share
stations in the area and in the whole city).
Concerning segways, Seg City Tours offers
the opportunity to enjoy the neighbourhood riding these sustainable vehicles.
Las últimas semanas, numerosos vecinos y comerciantes del barrio han manifestado su
disgusto al ver cómo no se limpiaban las calles. Este malestar, unido al problema de imagen
que puede causar en un barrio de tanta afluencia turística como el nuestro, hacen que el
esfuerzo de todos sea vital para solucionar este problema.
La Asociación ha trasladado la necesidad de resolver esta situación al Ayuntamiento de
Madrid, con reuniones de trabajo con la Delegación de Medio Ambiente y Movilidad para
buscar soluciones a este problema que afecta a habitantes y visitantes. Es un trabajo de todos.
Primero, una obligación de nuestro ayuntamiento y, también, una colaboración de nosotros,
los ciudadanos –vecinos, comerciantes y visitantes–: papeles a las papeleras, bolsas de basura
depositadas en el contenedor a su hora… una conciencia cívica, en suma, que reforzará
nuestro derecho a un barrio limpio y salubre.
Streets must be clean
In recent weeks, many residents and local shopkeepers have expressed their discontent about streets not being cleaned. This concern, together with the bad impression
that this situation can make in such a touristic area, makes it vital to join efforts to
solve this problem.
The Association has informed the City Council of Madrid on the need to solve this
problem, via work meetings with the Environment and Mobility Delegation aiming
at finding solutions to this problem, which affects both locals and visitors. It is a
joint effort because, even if it is an obligation for institutions, it will not succeed
without the citizens’, shopkeepers’ and visitors’ engagement: using bins to throw
away paper, placing trash into containers at the adequate times of day... To sum up,
civic awareness that will reinforce our right to a clean and healthy neighbourhood.

El jurado compuesto por miembros de Mahou,
Nuevo Estilo y la Asociación de Comerciantes
del Barrio de las Letras premió con 1.000€ a
Monique Gilly por conseguir el balcón más
bonito del Barrio de Las Letras. Esta iniciativa,
creada en el marco de DecorAccion, animó a
los vecinos a decorar sus balcones, dando un
toque especial a nuestro barrio. Por nuestra
parte, ¡animamos a que los balcones se decoren
todo el año!
1st Balcony Contest
The jury, made up by representatives of
Mahou, Nuevo Estilo and Asociación de
Comerciantes del Barrio de las Letras,
awarded €1,000 to Monique Gilly for
having the most beautiful balcony in the
Barrio de las Letras. This initiative, which
was created in the framework of the DecorAcción project, encouraged residents to
decorate their balconies, endowing our
neighbourhood with a special touch. For
our part, we encourage you to decorate
balconies all year long!

l Barrio de las Letras es un laberinto de complejo trazado que, como en la prodigiosa ‘Rayuela’ de
Cortázar, permite al visitante elaborar mil itinerarios.
En la revista que usted tiene entre manos vamos a
desgranar, en este y los próximos números, algunos de ellos.
Hoy le invitamos a deambular por una de las zonas más
interesantes del barrio, la que, junto al Paseo del Prado, y de
espaldas a CaixaForum, conforman las calles de la Verónica,
la Alameda, San Pedro, Gobernador, Almadén y San Blas.

The Barrio de las Letras is a labyrinth with a complex layout
that, just as in Cortázar's brilliant Rayuela, allows the visitor to
create a thousand itineraries. In the current and future issues of
the magazine you are reading, we are going to detail some of
them.
Today, we invite you to wander around one of the most interesting areas of the neighbourhood: the one right next to the Paseo
del Prado and behind the CaixaForum museum, made up by the

Empecemos, si le parece, por la Calle de la Alameda.
Aquí se ubican algunos de los centros más interesantes
de la cultura de vanguardia del barrio. Si la cogemos
desde la Plaza de la Platería –donde podremos disfrutar de un relajado tentempié en las terrazas extendidas

dispuestos al cambio social. Si continuamos
en dirección a la calle Atocha, MedialabPrado (Alameda, 15) nos sorprende con su
fachada multimedia.
Estos son algunos hitos de la calle más
meridional del barrio, pero no podemos dejar de visitar las muchas, e interesantísimas,
galerías de arte que tienen su refugio en
Alameda y otras calles aledañas, como la de
Almadén, así como estudios de arquitectura o tiendas de moda diferente. Toda
esta zona es un hervidero de creatividad.
La calle de San Pedro, paralela a la de la
Alameda hacia el norte, concentra un buen
número de talleres de restauradores y
tiendas de muebles vintage. También
encontramos la Asesoría Inmobiliaria
Las Letras (San Pedro, 9), la primera que
se instaló en el barrio, así como Mazarías
(San Pedro, 13), donde los amantes de las
motos clásicas no deben dejar de curiosear,
o la Cristalería Venegas (Almadén, 8). Y,
atención melómanos, en San Pedro también está la Guitarrería Juan Álvarez, en
el número 7, y, al lado, La Casa del Arpa.
La visita a esta zona del barrio se completa
con las calles de San Blas, Almadén, Gobernador y la Verónica, paralelas entre sí, con
un sinfín de propuestas creativas.
Para recuperar fuerzas, una buena comida
en algún fantástico café o restaurante. Aquí
encontramos rincones como la Bodega de

San Pedro Street, parallel to Alameda to the
North, hosts quite a number of restoration
workshops and vintage furniture stores.
We can also find the real estate agency Asesoría Inmobiliaria Las Letras (San Pedro,
9), the oldest in the neighbourhood, as well
as Mazarías (San Pedro, 13), a store which
classic motorbike lovers will be delighted
to browse, or the Cristalería Venegas
glassware shop (Almadén, 8). And, for music
lovers, the Juan Álvarez guitar shop is
located in the number 7 of San Pedro Street,
right next to La Casa del Arpa (The Harp
House). The visit of this part of the neighbourhood finishes off by strolling the parallel
streets of San Blas, Almadén, Gobernador
and la Verónica, with an endless assortment
of creative offers.
To rest and recover, enjoy a hearty meal
in some fantastic cafeteria or restaurant.
There are some nice spots around, such as

In only six years, CaixaForum Madrid, the social and cultural centre of ‘La Caixa’ in Madrid, has established itself as one
of the major cultural centres of the city. This natural boundary between the Paseo del Prado and the Barrio de las Letras,
its unmistakable silhouette, with a clear industrial appearance, attracted over 835,000 visitors during the last season.
Isabel Fuentes, its director, reveals the secret of its success.

solo seis años, como uno de los grandes centros culturales de la capital. Frontera natural
entre el Paseo del Prado y el Barrio de las Letras, su silueta inconfundible, de inequívoco
aire industrial, atrajo la pasada temporada a más de 835.000
visitantes. Isabel Fuentes, su directora, nos revela el secreto
de su éxito.
-¿Con qué nos va a sorprender CaixaForum esta temporada que acaba de empezar?
-Actualmente tenemos dos exposiciones que se están exhibiendo: 'Mediterráneo, del mito a la razón', que podrá visitarse hasta

enero de 2015, con piezas de Grecia y Roma que no se habían
expuesto nunca antes en España; y, hasta el 12 de octubre,
'Le Corbusier. Un atlas de paisajes modernos', que hace un
recorrido por la vida del arquitecto suizo. Después tendremos
a Roni Horn, el certamen FotoPress y otras exposiciones sobre
fotoperiodismo. Ya en 2015 contaremos con una exposición
sobre el reino animal en el Egipto faraónico y, a partir del verano
que viene, el arte mochica del antiguo Perú.
INTERVIEW
-¿Cuál es la propuesta de Caixa Forum? ¿Qué le diferencia de otros centros de cultura y arte de la zona?
-Son muchas cosas las que nos unen con los museos colindantes, pero como centro de la Obra Social "la Caixa" tenemos
nuestras señas de identidad. CaixaForum es un centro abierto
para todos los públicos, una plataforma de divulgación para
la ciudadanía que pretende actuar como correa de transmisión para la transformación de la sociedad, combinando en su
programación exposiciones de arte clásico y contemporáneo
de primer nivel organizadas con instituciones como el MoMa,
el Louvre, el MACBA o la Tate. También contamos ciclos de
conferencias, debates, programación de cine, talleres y educativos. Esto nos permite ser un complemento ideal en la oferta
cultural madrileña.
-El proyecto arquitectónico de CaixaForum convirtió
una antigua central eléctrica abandonada en un edificio
totalmente vanguardista. ¿Qué les atrajo del antiguo
edificio, una construcción industrial de ladrillo?
-La Central Eléctrica del Mediodía era uno de los pocos ejemplos de arquitectura industrial modernista en Madrid. Además,
hacía frontera entre el Paseo del Prado y el Barrio de las Letras.
Así que significaba rehabilitar un edificio que es un ejemplo
minoritario de un estilo arquitectónico importante, que cumplía una función social y cultural y que abría ese camino entre
el Paseo del Prado y el Barrio de las Letras. Es cierto que se hizo
una ampliación, pero se ha conservado de la fachada todo lo
que se ha podido. Por ejemplo, hay 50.000 ladrillos repuestos
manufacturados especialmente para esta rehabilitación.
-¿Qué le aporta a CaixaForum la proximidad del Barrio
de las Letras?
-Yo conozco el Barrio de las Letras desde hace muchos años y no
ha hecho otra cosa que mejorar y mejorar. Aporta muchísima
diversidad, es un caldo de cultivo de creatividad, de progreso,
de avance… Es un barrio abierto y respetuoso con todos. Tiene
muchos focos de creatividad e iniciativas, tanto culturales como
empresariales. Es un barrio que se ha revitalizado gracias a
la implantación de galerías, talleres, restaurantes y nuevos
negocios, y estos nos beneficia a todos. Creo que tiene una
gran dosis de juventud, pero que convive con la gente del
barrio de toda la vida.
-¿Cuáles son sus sitios preferidos del barrio?
-Son muchos, porque he vivido seis años en la Plaza de Santa
Ana número 10. Viví la transformación de la Plaza. Y, rincones, todos los del mundo. Podría pasarme cinco entrevistas
hablando de rincones. Pero me quedo con uno que está al
otro extremo del barrio y al que le tengo mucho cariño: el
Café Central. Le reconozco un mérito importante porque es
el único sitio de Madrid que lleva programando música en
vivo a diario desde hace más tres décadas. Y, además, de la

Which surprises is CaixaForum hiding for
this season that has just started?
There are currently two ongoing exhibitions: “Mediterráneo, del mito a la razón”
(Mediterranean, from myth to reason),
scheduled until January 2015, with ancient Greek and Roman pieces that had
never been exhibited before in Spain. And,
until 12th October, "Le Corbusier. Un atlas
de paisajes modernos” (Le Corbusier. An
atlas of modern landscapes), on the life
of the Swiss architect. After that, we will
host an exhibition about Roni Horn, the
Fotopress contest and further exhibitions
about photojournalism. In 2015, there
will be an exhibition on the Nilo's fauna in
Ancient Egypt and, from next summer on,
Moche art of Ancient Peru.
Could you tell us about CaixaForum’s approach? What is the difference with other
culture and art centres of the area?
Many things link us to the neighbouring
museums; however, in La Caixa Foundation centre, we have our own hallmarks.
CaixaForum is an open centre, suitable for
all audiences, a dissemination platform
that aims at becoming a paramount
agent in the transformation of society. In
its agenda, it combines high-level exhibitions of classic and contemporary art,
organised in partnership with institutions
like the MoMA, the Louvre, the MACBA
or the Tate. It also hosts conferences,
debates, film screenings, workshops and
educational activities. This allows us to
be a perfect complement for Madrid’s
cultural activities.

turned an old, abandoned power plant

into a cutting-edge building. What in the
old building, an industrial construction
made of bricks, attracted your attention?
The Central Eléctrica del Mediodía was
one of the few examples of modernist
industrial architecture in Madrid. Furthermore, it was a boundary between the Paseo del Prado and the Barrio de las Letras.
So it was all about refurbishing a building
that was a rare example of a significant
architectural style, that had a social and
cultural role and that opened up a way
between the Paseo del Prado and the
Barrio de las Letras. It is worth mentioning that it was indeed enlarged, but the
façade has been preserved to the greatest
extent possible. For example, there are
50,000 replaced bricks manufactured
specifically for this refurbishment.
How does the Barrio de las Letras being
so near help CaixaForum?
I have known the Barrio de las Letras for
many years now, and it has been continuously improving ever since. It provides
a lot of diversity, it is a breeding ground
for creativity, progress, advance... It is an
open and respectful neighbourhood. It
is highly creative and innovating, both
when it comes to culture and business.
The new galleries, workshops, restaurants
and shops that have been set up breathe
life into the neighbourhood, which is in
all our interests. I think that it is highly
influenced by youth, but at the same time
it coexists with locals that have lived there
forever.
What are your favourite places in the
neighbourhood?
Lots of them, because I lived for six years
in Santa Ana Square, 10. I witnessed the
transformation of the square. And about
the special spots in the neighbourhood...
All of them. I could spend five interviews
talking about spots. But I would like to
mention one which is located in the opposite part of the neighbourhood, which I
am particularly fond of: the Café Central.
I think it deserves special recognition, as
it is the only place in Madrid where there
has been daily live music for more than
three decades. And, furthermore, it is of

It dates back to the end of the 17th century and its
oldest documented apothecary, in 1700, was Pedro
Serrano, a contemporary of Cervantes. Part of the
antique wood furniture and the porcelain jars from
1850 are still in the shop today.
Esteban García de Ochandatay opened this ironmonger’s in 1888 and soon gained a reputation with the
products he brought from Germany and England –some
of which are still there today. He was the great grandfather of the current owner, María Jesús García del Río.

In Virginia Woolf’s footsteps
If its walls could speak...
Founded in 1853, when there were still very few hotels
in Madrid. Geniuses like Virginia Woolf and Valle-Inclán
have slept on its beds. It closed in 2012 to open again
one year later, but thankfully it has preserved its 19thcentury flair.
Lhardy is not only the restaurant with the most famous
cocido (meat, veg & chickpea stew) in Madrid: it is history. Kings have dined in the venue and far-reaching
political decisions were made. And Azorín already said
it all: ‘You can’t imagine Madrid without Lhardy’.
Passing through their doors is
like entering a time machine. The
atmosphere of long-gone decades
can still be felt between their walls.
These veritable institutions in the
Barrio de las Letras are well worth
a visit, and all well over 100 years
old. The reasons abound. Lhardy,
the mythical restaurant on Carrera
de San Jerónimo, opened its doors
in 1839 and celebrates its 175th
anniversary this year, and they’ve
designed a mouth-watering menu for
the occasion. For its part, at Farmacia
León, we can still nose around amidst
lovely 19th-century porcelain jars; at
the Ferretería García del Río we
can find old tools whose production
ceased long ago, and at the Hotel
Inglés feel the echoes of geniuses

ecorAccion 2014, el mayor evento urbano
de la decoración en España, organizado
por la revista 'Nuevo Estilo' y la Asociación
de Comerciantes del Barrio de las Letras,
en colaboración con el Ayuntamiento de Madrid,
celebró su quinta edición del 5 al 8 de junio.
Este compromiso con el diseño, el arte y el interiorismo convocó a anticuarios, interioristas, comercios
y vecinos en un escenario festivo, que acogió actos
como la batucada patrocinada por Bruguer.
La casa Museo Lope de Vega abrió sus puertas
para acoger el talento de nuevos diseñadores en
el concurso Audi Innovate Design Talent, en un
entorno de calles rodeado de originales propuestas de decoración, de creación para el disfrute de
habitantes y visitantes. Conferencias, charlas, cócteles… todo contribuyó a que el encuentro de
la creatividad con los visitantes de DecorAccion
consolidara esta cita como un centro de atención
cuyo reconocimiento traspasa las fronteras de Madrid al resto de ciudades españolas y europeas que
organizan actos similares.

recreated in MediaLab Prado the image

DecorAccion 2014, the largest urban design event
in Spain, organised by Nuevo Estilo magazine and
the Barrio de las Letras Merchants’ Association,
in collaboration with the Madrid City Council,
celebrated its fifth edition from 5 to 8 June. This
commitment to design, art and interior design
assembled dealers, interior designers, merchants
and neighbours, with festive activities included the
batucada (Brazilian percussion music) sponsored
by Bruguer.
The House-Museum of Lope de Vega opened
its doors to welcome new talented designers to
the Audi Innovate Design Talent competition, in a
setting surrounded by original decorative proposals created for the enjoyment of residents and
visitors alike. Conferences, talks, cocktails... all this
contributed to turn this encounter between creativity and DecorAccion visitors' into a major focus of
attention that has been widely recognised beyond
the Madrid borders, being noticed in many other
Spanish and European cities organising similar
events..

n un par de minutos, unos pasos suponen un viaje por el
tiempo de cuatro siglos y una visita muy recomendable.
En pleno centro de Madrid, la visita guiada a la Casa
Museo Lope de Vega comienza en un patio-huerto que
empieza a invitar a la ensoñación, al viaje a unos tiempos en los
que el Barrio de las Letras gozaba de la mayor concentración de
genio universal, con Cervantes, Quevedo, Góngora y el propio
Lope viviendo y creando en sus calles.
Desde 1610, cuando el escritor compró la casa, al año 1635,
cuando murió con 73 años y fue enterrado en la iglesia de San
Sebastián, en la actual calle de Atocha, la casa se convirtió en un
poderoso centro de interés en el barrio, ya que su propietario
tuvo la suerte de gozar de gran popularidad por el éxito de su
obra, en la que destacan sus piezas teatrales (dijo haber escrito
1.500, de las que se conservan 500, 300 confirmadas) como
'El perro del hortelano' y 'Fuenteovejuna'. Toda una labor, en
la que también figuraron novela y poesía, que le auparon a la
cima de la literatura universal.
Desde el primer momento, la explicación de la guía ayuda

a ‘entrar en el personaje’, en una casa que, en su época, estaba
a escasos metros del ‘mentidero de los representantes’ donde
dramaturgos, actores y poetas no paraban de comentar –sobre
todo con mala idea–, el trabajo de los demás.
En pocos minutos nos encontramos en el oratorio, testimonio de la fe del morador –que fue ordenado sacerdote– y
lugar de oración desde la pequeña ventana de su habitación,
situada enfrente. Otra prueba de la fe familiar se demuestra
con la presencia de valiosos objetos depositados por el cercano
Convento de las Trinitarias, ya que Sor Marcela, hija de Lope,
fue su superiora.
En poco más de media hora, el visitante puede disfrutar de
una evocación de la vida y obra de Lope y de los usos y sus
costumbres de su época. Se habla de sus grandes amores –tres,
y once amantes–, de sus hijos –catorce– y de los hábitos de
todos ellos, mientras comprobamos cómo eran los libros de la
época –donados por la Biblioteca Nacional-, su higiene, cómo
comían, cómo dormían… un gratificante paseo por la historia
en pleno Barrio de las Letras. !!"#$"

La habitación
de Alatriste
In a couple of minutes, just a
few steps will take you back
four centuries, in this highlyrecommended tour. In the heart
of Madrid, the guided tour of the
Lope de Vega Museum-House
starts in a garden courtyard that
induces daydreaming and a
journey back in time to when the
Barrio de las Letras enjoyed its
greatest concentration of worldrenowned geniuses, an era when
Cervantes, Quevedo, Góngora
and Lope himself lived and created in the district’s streets.
The writer bought the house
in 1610 and lived there until his
death in 1635, at the age of 73,
and was buried in the Church of
San Sebastián on the present-day
Calle de Atocha. During this
period, the house was of immense
interest in the neighbourhood, as
its owner was fortunate enough to
enjoy great popularity due to the
success of his works. His theatre
pieces were perhaps his greatest
claim to fame (he said he wrote
1500, of which 500 have been
conserved, with 300 confirmed),
with plays including 'El Perro del
Hortelano' and 'Fuenteovejuna'. An
enormous body of work, including
many novels and poetry, which
elevated him to the heights of
international literary fame.
From the very beginning, the
guide’s explanations help us get
inside the skin’ of this illustrious
personality, in a house that in its
day was located few metres from
the ‘Mentidero de los Representantes’, a debating society, where
playwrights, actors and poets
met to endlessly discuss others’
works, especially to criticise them.
We then headed to the oratory,
a testimony to his faith –he was
ordained as a priest– and prayer
spot from the small window of his
bedroom across the hall. Further
proof of the family’s faith can
be seen in the valuable objects
on display at the home from
the Convent of las Trinitarias
Descalzas, as Sister Marcela,
Lope’s daughter, was the superior.
In little more than half an hour,
visitors get a well-rounded idea
of Lope’s life and works, as well as
a glimpse into the era’s customs.
Guides speak of his three great
loves and 11 lovers, 14 children,
and about their habits, while
learning what books from this
period were like -donated from
the National Library-, their
hygiene, how and what they ate,
how they slept... a delightful and
learning-filled journey through
history in the heart of the Barrio

which he fought. This person
inspired Arturo Pérez Reverte
to create a now modern classic
of Spanish literature... Captain

also created, working with the
RAE (Spanish Royal Language
Academy) and the Community of
Madrid, the theatricalised routes
through the Barrio de las Letras.

Un espacio ultramoderno, blanco y minimalista, acoge la Colección
de Arte Contemporáneo de la Comunidad de Madrid, formada
por alrededor de 1.500 obras de todas las disciplinas. Inaugurado
en 2008 en Móstoles, al sur de la capital, el CA2M reparte sus casi
6.000 m2 entre los espacios de exposición, una sala de actos para
cien personas, un bar que también es tienda, una mediateca y una
terraza para actividades al aire libre.
La exposición permanente la forman los fondos de la colección, que se muestran temporalmente de forma rotatoria, pero el
CA2M también es sede de exposiciones individuales y colectivas
y de otras manifestaciones culturales, como las artes escénicas, las
performances o las proyecciones.
Para la nueva temporada, el CA2M amplía sus fondos con la Colección ARCO, con más de 300 piezas de artistas contemporáneos
cuyas obras se irán mostrando en distintas exposiciones.

Museo Naval. Cuartel General de la Armada
Sobre el mar, pero sin el mar
¿Un museo dedicado a la navegación en Madrid? Pues sí, ha
leído bien. El Museo Naval sorprende no solo por estar situado
muy lejos del mar, sino por la cantidad de curiosidades que se
exponen en sus salas. Entre ellas, la carta de navegación en la
que el marino Juan de la Cosa trazó, en el año 1500, las tierras
de ultramar descubiertas desde 1492 para mostrárselas a los
Reyes Católicos; o el compendio astronómico de Felipe II: un
estuche con preciosos instrumenos de navegación elaborado
en 1596 por el prestigioso orfebre Tobías Volckhmer. En total,
unas 10.500 piezas que harán las delicias de los amantes de
la navegación.

in Madrid? Yep, you read it
right. The Navy Museum is a
complete surprise, not only
because it is so far from the
sea, but because of the huge
number of odd and strange
objects exhibited in its different rooms. To name just
a few of these fascinating
items, we have the nautical
chart that Juan de la Cosa
drafted in 1500, detailing the
overseas lands discovered
since 1492 to show to the
Catholic Kings; and Philip II’s
astronomy case containing
priceless navigation instruments, which was crafted in
1596 by illustrious goldsmith
Tobías Volckhmer. A total
of 10,500 pieces that will
delight and fascinate lovers
of the sea.

Estamos acostumbrados a que en los museos se mira pero no
se toca. Aquí es diferente: es obligatorio tocar. En el Museo
Tiflológico de la ONCE todas las piezas se pueden ver y tocar,
ya que está especialmente pensado para que las personas
invidentes puedan acercarse al arte. Así, mediante el tacto,
el visitante puede hacer un recorrido a través de reproducciones de los monumentos arquitectónicos más famosos del
planeta, como el Taj Mahal, el Partenón
o la Torre Eiffel.
Pero este interesante museo va más allá
y también expone material tiflológico
-con sistemas de escritura anteriores al

touch. It’s different here: you
must touch things. At the
ONCE Typhlology Museum,
you can look and touch all
the pieces, as it was specially
designed so that the blind
can experience art. Thus,
using their sense of touch,
visitors can wander among
replicas of the most famous
architectural monuments
on the planet, such as the Taj
Mahal, Parthenon and the
Eiffel Tower.
However, this interesting

los fogones y restaurantes –varios de ellos situados
en el barrio– sino que ha sido proveedora del programa 'Master Chef', donde se ponen a prueba cada
semana las habilidades de experimentados chefs.

dueño, Davide Ribet, turinés afincado en
Madrid desde hace años, ha querido traer
a la capital los sabores de la región norte
de Italia, en concreto del Piamonte y del
Véneto. Su fuerte es la pasta fresca: el chef
y el personal son también turineses y la
elaboran en el restaurante a diario. Pero
tampoco hay que dejar de degustar sus
risottos –con recetas nuevas cada semana-,
sus postres caseros o, para terminar una
comida, sus mojitos naturales de guarapera. Su seña de identidad, dicen, es la
calidad de las materias primas: todos los
productos son frescos y de temporada, de
ahí que la carta cambie a menudo.

information on services offered at different establishments. Advertising and promotion are vital for running a
business, especially during crises (just as the one we are
going through) and in such a commercial area as ours;
however, it is equally vital to respect some unwritten rules
on coexistence with locals and visitors of the Barrio de las
Letras.
This activity generates an amount of income for
flyer hander-outers (for example, in order to pay for their
studies) which is conditional upon the positive results of
such advertising. We all agree on that... As long as there
is respect for the passersby, other establishments nearby
(not invading their space) and the subsequent street
cleaning.

Algunos establecimientos utilizan también

ejemplo, facilita a los huéspedes códigos QR para
conocer su opinión y, cuando hacen el 'checkin', les llega una encuesta al correo electrónico.
Todo esto ha provocado un gran cambio
en el sector: ha invertido en calidad, ya que

Ana''. Teatro –estuvo en la Compañía
Nacional de Teatro Clásico– y televisión –'Hospital Central', 'Amar en tiempos
revueltos' y la próxima emisión en TVE de
'Víctor Ros'– marcan la actualidad de este
actor que ha decidido emprender en un
barrio que conoce como la palma de su
mano: es propietario, con el actor Marco
Martínez –''es aún más del barrio que yo''– y
Mario Álvarez, de 'Matute' y 'Carbones 13'.
Estos años de su vida están muy ligados
al barrio…
¡Estoy tan metido en él, que ir a Gran Vía ya
es una excursión! Desde que empezaba con
mis clases de teatro en el Ateneo estoy muy
ligado al barrio, no solo por trabajo, sino
porque vivo a cincuenta metros de Matute.
¿Cuál es el balance de esta etapa como
emprendedor?
Muy buena, acabamos de cumplir un año
en Matute, con muy buen resultado.
Televisión, su implicación en locales…
¿cómo ajusta agenda?
Hay tiempo para todo, incluso para caminar por el barrio, saludar a los amigos, a la
gente del pequeño comercio de mi zona…
Incluso en los próximos meses, que trabajaré en una serie que se emitirá la próxima
primavera –estoy encantando con ella, va
a sorprender–, sacaré tiempo para estar en
los locales , pasear por unas calles que, por
cierto, espero que estén más limpias...
¿Qué mejoraría en el barrio?
Sin duda, le pediría a los políticos, sean del
partido que sean, que paseen por esta zona
histórica, cultural, turística, a la que hay que
cuidar como si fuese una casa vieja. Y que
se solucionen los problemas que vemos
–e incluso olemos–, en algunos puntos
de nuestro barrio.

He came from Valencia "straight to Santa Ana
square". Theatre –he was part of the National
Classical Theatre Company– and television
shows –'Hospital Central', 'Amar en tiempos
revueltos' and 'Víctor Ros', which will be soon
broadcast in TVE (a state-owned Spanish TV
channel)– are the milestones of this actor
who has decided to become an entrepreneur
in a neighbourhood that he knows like the
back of his hand: he owns, together with
the actor Marcos Martínez –''he loves the
neighbourhood even more than I do''– and
Mario Álvarez, the establishments 'Matute'
and 'Carbones 13'.
These recent years of your life are intimately linked to the neighbourhood...
I am so into it that going to Gran Vía is an
actual trip for me! Since my very first acting
lessons in the Ateneo theatre, I became very
attached to the neighbourhood, not only
because of my work, but also because I live 50
meters away from Matute.
What is your assessment of this stage of
your life as an entrepreneur?
Very positive, we have just celebrated Matute's first anniversary with excellent results.
Television, involvement with establishments... How do you manage to do it all?
There is time for everything, even for taking
a walk around the neighbourhood, meeting
friends or the people working at local shops...
Even during the next months, when I will be
working on a TV series scheduled for next
spring –I'm so happy about it, it is going to
be quite surprising–, I will find the time to
be in the establishments, to stroll along the
streets that, by the way, I hope that they will
be cleaner...
What would you improve in the neighbourhood?
I would undoubtedly ask politicians, irrespective of the party they engage with, to walk
around this historical, cultural and tourist
area, which we have to take care of as if it was
an old house. And to solve all the problems
that we can see –or even smell– in some spots
of our neighbourhood.
MY FAVOURITE SPOTS
Además de evocar los tiempos en los que pisó por
primera vez la Plaza de Santa Ana,''el Teatro Español,
el hotel de los toreros''… Nacho escoge sus paseos
por Cervantes y León y por las calles que la rodean y la
singularidad y atractivo de la Plaza de Matute, ''todo
un descubrimiento, quién me iba a decir que iba a
participar en un local alojado en uno de los escasos
edificios modernistas que quedan en Madrid'.'

Apart from remembering the times when he first set
foot in Santa Ana square, the Teatro Español or the
"bullfighters' hotel", Nacho enjoys walking along the Cervantes and León streets and those surrounding them, as
well as the uniqueness and appeal of the Matute Square,
"a true discovery! Who would have thought that I was
ever going to be part of an establishment located in one
of the very few modernist buildings left in Madrid.'
