Wojciech B. Jaskowiak, who begins his assignment at St. Peter’s this weekend. He replaces Fr. Mayhel Velasquez who served at our parish for the past year and whom we thank for his ministry among us. Fr. Wojciech (pronounced Voy-Check) comes to our parish with a wealth of life and pastoral experiences which I am sure he will put to good use at St. Peter’s. Originally from Poland, Fr. Wojciech came to this country in 1994 to receive his seminary formation at the Redemptoris Mater Seminary in Kearny, NJ. His missionary formation included stints in Siberia and Estonia. Fr. Wojciech was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Newark nine years ago, and served at Immaculate Heart of Mary/ St. Patrick parishes in Elizabeth. Subsequently, Fr. Wojciech was released to do missionary on the Island of Guam, where he served as seminary formator, parochial vicar and pastor. It was there that I had the great joy of working with Fr. Wojciech. Fr. Wojciech B. Jaskowiak I am particularly indebted to Archbishop John J. Myers for assigning such a fine young priest to St. Peter’s. From my communications with Fr. Wojciech in the past few weeks, I could sense an enormous enthusiasm and gratitude for this assignment among us. I am sure you will make Fr. Wojciech welcome at our parish. Please make sure you introduce yourselves to him in the coming days. Witamy (welcome) Fr. Wojciech! We also welcome a very special visitor to our parish this coming week. The international travelling statue of Our Lady of Fatima, here in the Archdiocese of Newark for a three-week period, will come to our parish this Tuesday for a 24-hour period. The Church will be open for extensive periods to ensure that all our parishioners will get the opportunity to ask for the Blessed Mother’s heavenly intercession and receive her maternal protection. The phones at the rectory have been ringing off the hook these past days with parishioners at neighboring parishes enquiring about the visit by Our Lady of Fatima. May we, the faithful at St. Peter’s, show her the same kind of devotion and love during these special days. This week also see the beginning of a “Fortnight for Freedom,” called forth by our bishops due to a serious situation we have been faced with and which can seriously jeopardize religious freedom in this country. The recent mandate by the Department of Health and Human Services forcing employers to provide insurance coverage that includes immoral means of contraception and abortion-inducing medication, is an enormous threat to the religious landscape in the U.S. During the coming days, especially now that we approach Independence Day, we are invited to pray that our lawmakers may be enlightened on this important matter. In agreement with the parishes in our New Energies Cluster, we will keep our Church open from 7AM to 4PM the next two Fridays (June 22 and 29) for those who wish to come and pray for the defense of religious freedom (St. Anthony’s in Silver Lake will remain open on Tuesdays while Most Holy Name in East Orange will be open Thursdays). At all daily masses from June 21 to July 4, we will recite a prayer for freedom provided by our bishops, at the end of the Prayer of the Faithful. You can also find the text on page 3 of this bulletin in case you wish to pray it at home. A Blessed Sunday to all, Fr. We will have an ANOINTING MASS on SATURDAY, JUNE 23rd at 11:00 a.m. It will be a bilingual Mass and anyone can be anointed whose health is impaired. Through this Sacrament we receive a special outpouring of God’s love, and this Sacrament can also bring about an improvement in our spiritual and physical well-being. After the Mass, we will serve a light lunch in the Rectory. If you plan on attending the Anointing Mass, you can fill out the form below and return it to the rectory, or you can call the rectory and sign-up verbally. Please register by Wednesday, June 20th. My Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, I write today to urge you to speak with clarity and strength against efforts by the current federal Administration to define what a Catholic institution is, and to impose restrictions and rules that would, if implemented require Catholic institutions-and Catholics themselves-to violate Church teaching and tradition. Beginning June 21 and continuing until July 4, every diocese across the nation will be participating in a Fortnight of Freedom to call for an end to an intrusion into the ordering of Church institutions. Throughout these two weeks a number of national and regional events will take place, such as June 8 Mass and Rally in Trenton. I encourage you to participate in this local event and become more informed about how fragile this first and most precious of all of our freedoms has become in recent years. I I also encourage you to bring the matter into your local parish and wider community. For example, the parish can host a viewing of such appropriately-themed films as A Man for All Season of The War of the Vendee, or sponsor a trip to the soon-to-released For Greater Glory, followed by a discussion back at the parish. Or use materials available online at www.rcan.org/religiousliberty and www.fortnight4freedom.org for other parish based sessions and outreach to let our elected representatives in Washington know what we as American citizens and Catholics stand for. Let me be clear: Fortnight for Freedom and the Church’s efforts to halt imposition of Health and Human Services rules is not about contraceptives is already widespread. Most nonChurch employers provide this coverage, and even without coverage, birth-control pills can be obtained at low cost. The Church is merely seeking to ensure that Government does not become involved in what we teach or starts to erode our first of all freedoms. With kindest personal regards, I am Sincerely in the Lord, Most Reverend John J. Myers Archbishop of Newark PRAYER FOR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY Almighty God, Father of all nations, for freedom you have set us free in Christ Jesus (Gal 5:1). We praise and bless you for the gift of religious liberty, the foundation of human rights, justice, and the common good. Grant to our leaders the wisdom to protect and promote our liberties; by your grace may we have the courage to defend them, for ourselves and for all those who live in this blessed land. We ask this through the intercession of Mary Immaculate, our patroness, and in the name of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with whom you live and reign, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Page Five Pope Benedict XVI CONTEMPLATION OF CHRIST DOES NOT DISTANCE US FROM REALITY St. Paul's experience of contemplation and the power of prayer, as recounted in his Second Letter to the Corinthians, provided the central theme of Benedict XVI's catechesis during Wednesday’s General Audience. Paul did not respond to the voices questioning the legitimacy of his apostolate by enumerating the communities he had founded, nor did he limit himself to recounting the difficulties he had had to face in announcing the Gospel. Rather, the Pope explained, "he pointed to his relationship with the Lord, ... which was so intense as to be marked by moments of ecstasy and profound contemplation". Indeed, the Apostle says: "I will boast all the more gladly of my weakness, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me". Thus the Apostle of the Gentiles helps us to understand "that all the difficulties we meet in following Christ and bearing witness to His Gospel can be overcome by opening ourselves trustingly to the action of the Lord ... St. Paul clearly understood how to face and experience each event in his life, especially those involving suffering, difficulty and persecution: at the moment we feel our own weakness the power of God becomes manifest, a power which does not abandon or leave us alone but becomes our support and our strength". "As our union with the Lord grows and our prayer becomes more intense, we too come to focus on the essential and to understand that it is not the power of our own means that creates the Kingdom of God, but God Who works miracles through our very weakness", the Pope said. The intense contemplation of God which St. Paul experienced was, like that of the disciples on Mount Tabor, "enthralling and tremendous". Contemplating the Lord is "enthralling because He draws us to Himself, seizing our hearts and carrying them aloft to His heights were we experience the peace and beauty of His love. It is tremendous because it exposes our human frailty and inadequacy, the fatigue of defeating the Evil One who ensnares our lives". "In a world in which we risk relying only on the power of human means, we are called to rediscover and bear witness to the power of prayer, through which we grow day by day as our lives are conformed to that of Christ", said the Holy Father. He then went on to recall the Nobel Prize-winner and Protestant theologian Albert Schweitzer who said that "'Paul is a mystic and nothing more than a mystic', a man truly enamoured of Christ and so united to Him as to able to say: Christ lives in me. St. Paul's mysticism was not founded only on the exceptional events of his life, but also on his intense daily relationship with the Lord, Who always supported him with His Grace. 100TH BIRTHDAY OF ARCHBISHOP EMERITUS PETER LEO GERETY Archbishop Myers is inviting 10 parishioners to represent St. Peter’s Church at the Mass in honor of the 100th birthday of Archbishop Emeritus Peter Leo Gerety on July 19, 2012 at 3:00 pm. If you are interested, please call the rectory no later than June 25th. STATUE OF THE BLESSED MOTHER FOR THE PARISH GARDENS Many Parishioners have demonstrated a great interest in obtaining a lifesize statue of the Blessed Mother for the grounds of our Parish. "In our own life of prayer we too may experience moments of particular intensity in which we feel the Lord's presence more keenly", Benedict XVI added. "But it is important to remain constant and faithful in our relationship with God, especially in moments of aridity, difficulty and suffering. Only if we are seized by the love of Christ will we be able to face adversity, as Paul did, in the conviction that we can do all things through Him Who gives us strength". The Holy Father went on: "The more space we give to prayer, the more we will see our lives transformed and animated by the real power of God's love. This is what happened, for example, to Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta who, in contemplating Jesus, discovered the ultimate reason and incredible strength to recognize Him in the poor and abandoned, despite her fragile figure. "The contemplation of Christ in our life does not distance us from reality", the Pope concluded. "It makes us even more involved in human affairs, because the Lord, drawing us to Himself in prayer, enables us to remain close to all our brothers and sisters in His love". It is a time of reflection as we look back on the past year with joyful memories and look forward to the 2012-2013 school year. Congratulations to the class of 2012 as they leave the halls of St. Peter’s School and begin anew. Summer is fast approaching. Although school has ended, it is important for parents to encourage our students to practice their faith; please take them to church regularly. God never takes a vacation. In the month of June we say good-bye to a member of St.Peter’s School community. Mrs. Patricia Sauchelli, school secretary, is retiring after nine years of service to spend more time with her family. I offer my heartfelt thanks to her for all the help she has given me these past two years.
