May 11, 2014 4th Sunday of Easter FOLLOWING THE GOOD SHEPHERD The joyful tone of the past three Sundays of Easter is a little darker today. All three readings remind us of suffering, death, and sin. We, like Peter’s audience in the first reading, can ask, “What are we to do?” And the answer will be the same: we must reform. Or, as Peter says in his first Letter, we have strayed like sheep and must return to the shepherd. Jesus describes himself as a shepherd in today’s Gospel, and we know it was one of the earliest images of Christ in the apostolic church. Today’s passage continues the darker theme of the first two readings. Danger lurks and the sheep need protection. They might follow a false leader; they might be stolen or destroyed. Only in Jesus Christ will we be safe. Only in him will we have eternal life. Copyright J. S. Some of the most powerful images of Christ are presented this weekend. One characteristic of Christ, as he cares for us, is his leaving the 99 and finding the 1. Like a shepherd, he carries the “1” back to the fold. At times, we are that “1.” We sin and stray. And, Christ searches for us. He speaks to our heart, so that we can follow him once again. But, most of the time we are the “99.” We stay close to one another, close to the Church, united in faith. But, we are Christ, the Good Shepherd Parish. That means that we are to follow Christ in a special way. So, we must be like Christ and go after the “1.” We must make special effort to reach out to that person who we are separated from. Maybe that person is in the pew next to you. Maybe that person is someone who used to attend Mass here, but has not attended in a while. Maybe that person is a neighbor or friend who needs to hear the message of Christ. Whoever the person, you can search them out and carry them to our Christian life. On this our Feast Day, work only to build up the Body of Christ, to build greater unity. Some of our young people have been preparing for Confirmation. Bishop Murry will confirm them next Sunday, May 18 at 2pm at the Cathedral. Please, pray for our candidates as they receive the Holy Spirit in a new way, and that their new sacramental life will inspire us. And, a very Happy Mother’s Day to all of you! God bless you, Fr. A veces somos esa “1”.
