The Triumph and
Exaltation of the Holy Cross

We are celebrating the feast of
the cross which drove away
darkness and brought in the
light. As we keep this feast,
we are lifted up with the crucified Christ, leaving behind us earth and sin so that we may
gain the things above. So great and outstanding a possession
is the cross that he who wins it has won a treasure. Rightly
could I call this treasure the fairest of all fair things and the
costliest, in fact as well as in name, for on it and through it
and for its sake the riches of salvation that had been lost
were restored to us.
Had there been no cross, Christ could not have been crucified. Had there been no cross, life itself could not have been
nailed to the tree. And if life had not been nailed to it, There
would be no streams of immortality pouring from Christ’s
side, blood and water for the world’s cleansing. The legal
bond of our sin would not be cancelled, we should not have
attained our freedom, we should not have enjoyed the fruit
of the tree of life and the gates of paradise would not stand
open. Had there been no cross, death would not have been
trodden underfoot, nor hell despoiled.
Therefore, the cross is something wonderfully great and
honorable. It is great because through the cross the many
noble acts of Christ found their consummation - very many
indeed, for both his miracles and his sufferings were fully
rewarded with victory. The cross is honourable because it is
both the sign of God’s suffering and the trophy of his victory. It stands for his suffering because on it he freely suffered
unto death. But it is also his trophy because it was the means
by which the devil was wounded and death conquered; the
barred gates of hell were smashed, and the cross became the
one common salvation of the whole world.
The cross is called Christ’s glory; it is saluted as his his triumph. We recognize it as the cup he longed to drink and the
climax of the sufferings he endured for our sake. As to the
cross being Christ’s glory, listen to his words: Now is the
Son of Man glorified, and in him God is glorified, and God
will glorify him at once. And again: Father, glorify me with
the glory I had with you before the world came to be. And
once more: “Father, glorify your name”. Then a voice came
from heaven: “I have glorified it and will glorify it again”.
Here he speaks of the glory that would accrue to him
through the cross. And if you would understand that the
cross is Christ’s triumph, hear what he himself also said:
When I am lifted up, then I will draw all men to myself.
Now you can see that the cross is Christ’s glory and triumph.
St. Andrew of Crete shows that the Feast of the Victory and
Exaltation of the Holy Cross of our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ was celebrated even in the era of the Early Church Fathers. This excerpt from one of St. Andrew's discourses (Oratio
10 in Exaltatione sanctae crucis: PG 97, 1018-1019, 1022-23)
is used in the Roman Catholic Office of Readings on September
14, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

You may register your child for our First Communion, Intermediate, and Confirmation programs Monday thru Friday
from 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. in the English CCD office.
First Communion: Children must be 6 years old or in the First
Grade to enter the program. Students coming back for their
2nd year must also register.
Intermediate: This program is for children who have already
received the sacrament of First Holy Communion, but are not
yet ready for the Confirmation program. This is a great program to continue your child’s growth in the faith.
Confirmation: Students entering the program must be within
the ages of 13 and 16. Second year students also need to register.
* You must bring a copy of your child’s baptism certificate (for the First Communion and Confirmation programs) and the donation of $30 .
*All classes have begun.
*Note: Registration deadline for all programs will be September 22.

Celebramos hoy la fiesta de la
cruz y, junto con el Crucificado, nos elevamos hacia lo alto,
para, dejando abajo la tierra y
el pecado, gozar de los bienes
celestiales; tal y tan grande es la posesión de la cruz. Quien
posee la cruz posee un tesoro. Y al decir un tesoro quiero
significar con esta expresión a aquel que es, de nombre y de
hecho, el más excelente de todos los bienes, en el cual, por
el cual y para el cual culmina nuestra salvación y se nos restituye a nuestro estado de justicia original.
Porque, sin la cruz, Cristo no hubiera sido crucificado. Sin la
cruz, aquel que es la vida no hubiera sido clavado en el leño.
Si no hubiese sido clavado, las fuentes de la inmortalidad no
hubiesen manado de su costado la sangre y el agua que purifican el mundo, no hubiese sido rasgado el documento en
que constaba la deuda contraída por nuestros pecados, no
hubiéramos sido declarados libres, no disfrutaríamos del
árbol de la vida, el paraíso continuaría cerrado. Sin la cruz,
no hubiera sido derrotada la muerte, ni despojado el lugar de
los muertos.
Por esto, la cruz es cosa grande y preciosa. Grande, porque
ella es el origen de innumerables bienes, tanto más numerosos cuanto que los milagros y sufrimientos de Cristo juegan
un papel decisivo en su obra de salvación. Preciosa, porque
la cruz significa a la vez el sufrimiento y el trofeo del mismo
Dios: el sufrimiento, porque en ella sufrió una muerte voluntaria; el trofeo, porque en ella quedó herido de muerte el
demonio y, con él, fue vencida la muerte. En la cruz fueron
demolidas las puertas de la región de los muertos, y la cruz
se convirtió en salvación universal para todo el mundo.
La cruz es llamada también gloria y exaltación de Cristo.
Ella es el cáliz rebosante de que nos habla el salmo, y la
culminación de todos los tormentos que padeció Cristo por
nosotros. El mismo. Cristo nos enseña que la cruz es su gloria, cuando dice: Ahora es glorificado el Hijo del hombre, y
Dios es glorificado en él, y pronto lo glorificará. Y también:
Padre, glorifícame con la gloria que yo tenía cerca de ti, antes que el mundo existiese. Y asimismo dice: «Padre, glorifica tu nombre». Entonces vino una voz del cielo: «Lo he glorificado y volveré a glorificarlo», palabras que se referían a
la gloria que había de conseguir en la cruz. También nos
enseña Cristo que la cruz es su exaltación, cuando dice:
“Cuando yo sea elevado sobre la tierra, atraeré a todos hacia
mí. Está claro, pues, que la cruz es la gloria y exaltación de
Cristo…”
San Andrés de Creta muestra que la fiesta de la Victoria y
la Exaltación de la Santa Cruz de nuestro Señor y Salvador
Jesucristo se celebraba incluso en la época de los Padres de
la Iglesia. Este extracto de uno de los discursos de San Andrés (Oratio 10 en Exaltatione sanctae crucis: PG 97, 10181019, 1022-1023) se utiliza en la Oficina Católica de Lectura el 14 de septiembre, fiesta de la Exaltación de la Santa
Cruz.

Primera Comunión: Los niños deben tener por lo menos 6
años de edad o estar en el 1er grado escolar. Los estudiantes
que regresan por el segundo año también necesitan registrarse.
Intermedio: Este maravilloso programa es para aquellos niños que han recibido el Sacramento de la Eucaristía y aún no
tienen la edad para entrar al programa de Confirmación.
Confirmación: Los estudiantes comenzando este programa

PRAYING THROUGH MARY FOR VOCATIONS

Being Self –Contained

We should not confuse sin and corruption. Sin, especially
repeated sin, leads to corruption , but not in a quantitative
way (as if so many sins equals one corrupt person), but
qualitatively , by creating habits that spoil and limit a person’s capacity to love, turning the heart’s direction more
and more inward toward goals that pertain only to itself,
making the person self-contained. As Saint Paul says:
For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God
has shown it to them. Ever since the creation of the world his
invisible nature, namely, his eternal power and deity, has been
clearly perceived in the things that have been made. So they are
without excuse; for although they knew God they did not honor
him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their
thinking and their senseless minds were darkened. Claiming to
be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man or birds or animals or reptiles (Rom 1:19-23)
Here we see clearly the process that goes from sin to corruption, with all that this implies of blindness, turning
away from God to rely on one’s own efforts, and so forth.
It would be fair to say that sins are forgiven but corruption
cannot be forgiven. This is simply because at the bottom of
every corrupt attitude is a weariness with the transcendent: instead of God , who never tires of forgiving , the corrupt person sets himself up as sufficient for his own salvation – he has tired of asking for forgiveness.

No debemos confundir el pecado y la corrupción. El pecado, el pecado especialmente repetido, conduce a la corrupción, pero no de una manera cuantitativa (como si
tantos pecados equivalen a una persona corrupta), pero
cualitativamente, mediante la creación de hábitos que
echan a perder y limitan la capacidad de una persona
para amar, sentido de giro del corazón cada vez más hacia el interior hacia las metas que se refieren sólo a sí mismo, por lo que la persona autónomo. Como dice San Pablo:
Porque lo que se puede conocer de Dios es manifiesto en ellos,
ya que Dios se lo ha mostrado. Pues desde la creación del mundo las perfecciones invisibles de Dios – su eterno poder y su
divinidad – se han hecho visibles a la inteligencia a través de
las cosas creadas. De modo que son inexcusables, porque habiendo conocido a Dios no le glorificaron como Dios ni le dieron gracias, sino que se envanecieron en sus razonamientos y
se oscureció su insensato corazón: presumiendo de sabios se
hicieron necios y llegaron a transferir la gloria del Dios incorruptible a imágenes que representan al hombre corruptible, y
a aves, a cuadrúpedos y a reptiles. (Romanos 1: 19-23)
Aquí vemos claramente el proceso que va desde el pecado a la corrupción, con todo lo que ello implica de la ceguera, como el alejamiento de Dios y confianza en el propio esfuerzo, y así sucesivamente.

Why the Sign of the Cross is Made on the Forehead

“In order to banish the shame of the Cross, I will not keep
it in a secret place, but I will wear it on my forehead. We
receive the sacraments in different ways: some we take in
the mouth, as you know, and some in the body as a whole.
Now, because our shame is worn on our forehead, the one
who said, ‘He who is ashamed of me before men, I will be
ashamed of before my father in heaven’ [Matt.10:33; Luke
9:26], has placed upon the place of shame and modesty the
same ignominious sign that the pagans disdain. When you
hear a man responding to some impudence by saying that
he is affronted, what does it mean? That he has no forehead, that is, that he has been shamed. Now that is why I
do not have a naked forehead, but one covered by the
Cross of my Saviour.”
Sería justo decir que los pecados son perdonados, pero la
corrupción no puede ser perdonada. Esto es simplemente porque en el fondo de toda actitud corrupta hay un
cansancio con lo trascendente: en lugar de Dios, que no
se cansa de perdonar. El corrupto se erige lo suficiente
para su propia salvación - porque se ha cansado de pedir
perdón.

El uso de la señal de la cruz
por los Padres de la Iglesia
La señal de la cruz se puede hacer para dar testimonio de
la fe en el Crucificado y así ser una profesión de fe, o para mostrar que uno espera y pone su confianza en el mismo Salvador, en cuyo caso se trata de un medio para invocar la ayuda de Dios por la virtud de la pasión de su
Hijo.
