MAKING HISTORY 2013
The first graduating class of 2013 at KingChávez Community High School has been,
for a majority of students, nurtured through
the King-Chávez organization since fifth
grade. As of now, twenty-eight of our 144
seniors have been accepted to four-year
universities in California and nation-wide,
including California State University Los
Angeles, San Diego State University, University of California Santa Cruz, University
of California Riverside, California State University San Marcos, and Oregon State University. In addition to our university-bound
students, we have approximately ninety
students confirmed to attend local community colleges in the fall. That is roughly
eight-two percent of our senior class that
is currently college-bound. This figure is

La primera clase de graduados del 2013 en
la Preparatoria King-Chávez ha sido, por
mayor parte de los estudiantes, educada y
cuidada a través de la organización de KingChávez desde que estaban en quinto grado.
Actualmente, veinte y ocho de nuestros 144
estudiantes del doceavo grado han sido
aceptados a universidades en California y en
todo el país, incluyendo la Universidad Estatal

their parents did not go to college, or they
have parents who did not finish high school. Our college-bound seniors are surely setting a great example for our underclassmen
as they can begin to take steps in pursuing
their own post-high school goals. Our College Readiness seniors are currently in the
process of compiling a video for our underclassmen to express the “do’s and don’t’s”
of applying for college. We hope that this will
serve as a helpful guide for years to come.
As we build our reputation within the college community, more opportunities will
arise, and we look forward to progressing
each year. Our first graduating class has

Our King-Chávez Primary Academy kiddos have worked extremely hard this year
building their foundation of love for academics, arts, and athletics. There’s never a dull
moment in kindergarten where these four,
five, and six-year-olds have fun learning
through our thematic units: Friends, Family, Neighborhood, Transportation, Weather,
Plants, Animals, Dinosaurs, and Life Cycles.
Here they find their first love of learning
by getting excited to read their first book,
to write their first sentence, to go on their
first field trip, or find meaningful connections in the world they live in. Kindergarten
is that special place where teachers plant
the seed of knowledge that will require
nurturing throughout a lifetime. We will
always treasure our memories from kindergarten and encourage our graduating
Class of 2025 to spread their wings and fly.

Academy han trabajado muy duro este año
en la construcción de base por amor a las
académico, artes y deportes. No hay nunca
un momento aburrido en el jardín de infantes, donde estos cuatro, cinco y seis años de

This year King-Chávez Arts and Athletics Academies ramped up the new Accelerated Reader (AR) program, run by Nicole
Pastor and Judy Sol. This program includes
forty minutes of sustained independent
reading in AR labs established within each
academy. Accelerated Reader helps students increase their reading comprehension through reading books at their level.

Achievement
Award
Section 1117 (b) of the Elementary and
Secondary Education Act (ESEA) Act of
2001 requires that all states receiving Title
I funds establish a program that recognizes Title I schools that exceed Adequate
Yearly Progress for two or more years or
significantly close the achievement gap
among numerically significant subgroups.
In order to be considered for honor,
schools must meet a variety of eligibility criteria including designated federal
and state accountability measures based
on Adequate Yearly Progress and Academic Performance Index requirements.
Schools selected for recognition receive
the Title I Academic Achievement Award
at a regional awards ceremony where the
State Superintendent of Public Instruction will present each school with the Academic Achievement Award. The events and
awards are funded by donations from many
of California’s most prominent corporations
and statewide educational organizations.
Additionally, each year the National Association of State Title I Directors presents
two National Title I Distinguished School
Awards per state. The awards are given to
one Academic Achievement Award winning school that has demonstrated exceptional student performance for two or more
consecutive years and to one Academic
Achievement Award winning school that
made the most progress in closing the
achievement gap between student groups.
The criteria to qualify for the Title I Academic Achievement Award have become
more rigorous in recent years. To meet the
criteria for this distinction, the school must
demonstrate that all students are making
significant progress toward proficiency on
California’s academic content standards.
Additionally, the school’s socioeconomically
disadvantaged students must have doubled
the achievement targets set for them for two
consecutive years. King-Chávez Primary has
met the challenges and has proven worthy of holding this title five years in a row.

Big Money,
Big Changes
The 2013-2014 school year will be the
first of three years that King-Chávez Community High School receives a grant to
expand and enhance the after school program. The thrill of the program is that it will
revolve around the interests and desires
of our students and staff here at KCCHS,
while simultaneously being partnered with
the Jackie Robinson YMCA. The advantage
of partnering with an organization such as
the YMCA is that it expands both the physical and human resources of the program to
a level that could not have been achieved
had the school worked alone on this project.
The program will run daily during the school
year and service over 130 students, for an
extra eighteen hours per week of supervised
time with positive adult role models. Interest surveys are circulating now through the
student body and staff so that we can form
a program that reflects our school community to the fullest. Programs are expected to
include: dance, tutoring, debate, swimming,
cooking, academic clubs, and field trips, all
free to our students.

El año escolar 2013-2014 será el primero
de tres años que King-Chávez Community
High School recibirá una beca para ampliar
y mejorar el programa después de escuela.
Lo más emocionante del programa es que
girara alrededor de los intereses y deseos de
nuestros estudiantes y el personal docente
de KCCHS, mientras que simultáneamente
será un asociado con Jackie Robinson
YMCA. La ventaja de asociarse con una
organización como YMCA, es que aumentara el programa de recursos físicos y humanos a un nivel que no se hubiera logrado
si la escuela hubiese trabajado sola en este
proyecto. El programa correrá diariamente
durante el año escolar y dará servicio a más
de 130 estudiantes con 18 horas adicionales por semana de tiempo supervisado con

Video Games on Campus
The “Blue School,” made up of KingChávez Primary, Arts, and Athletics
Academies has had the privilege of having a brain-based computer game series
called, Fast ForWord on campus since 2011.
Fast ForWord products build foundational
elementary school reading and language
skills to help students learn successfully in
the general classroom. Fast ForWord is designed to help students listen accurately, develop phonological awareness and language
structures, and moves elementary students
who are reading below grade-level toward
grade-level reading skills. In addition, Fast
ForWord supports all children in meeting
challenging state academic standards and
improves state test scores.
Deanna Taylor has been running the Fast
ForWord lab since July of 2011. She has
an average of 50-60 students in the Fast
ForWord lab each day, in addition to a new
push-in model in Jimmy Gordillo’s first grade
classroom. Before the students can begin
playing games, Fast ForWord requires each
student to take what is called a Reading
Progress Indicator (RPI) assessment. The RPI
assessments are administered before and
after Fast ForWord participation to help measure the impact of Fast ForWord intervention.
RPI assessments evaluate a student’s phonological awareness, decoding, vocabulary,
reading, listening and comprehension skills.

This year was a strong one for KingChávez Community High School in terms
of compliance and accreditation. Two organizations that look at and assess charter
schools in the state of California, have both
given our school full approval to continue
doing great things in the 2012-2013 school
year. Firstly, WASC, the Western Association
of Schools and Colleges, the body that gives
the required accreditation status to schools
and colleges in California and many other
parts of the world, has approved our charter for a full three-year term. Dale Mitchell,
former chairman of the organization, visited us and awarded a full accreditation in
January. Shortly thereafter, San Diego Unified School District, in the form of Charter
School Managers, Susan Park and Moises
Aguirre, visited and reviewed our results,
organizational documents, and structures,
and awarded us full five years of operation.
As a result of our continued accreditation, our staff, students, and administration are all motivated to show them what
we can do the next time around. These
awards have positively impacted the morale and reputation of the whole school.
They let us know that what we are doing
here is legitimized, and it greatly improves
our reputation as a competitive high school!
Este año ha sido muy fuerte para KingChávez Community High School en términos de acreditación. Dos organizaciones que
evalúan las escuelas charter en el estado de
California, han dado a nuestra escuela la autorización para seguir haciendo grandes cosas en el año escolar 2012-2013. En primer
lugar, WASC, la Asociación Occidental de Escuelas y Colegios, el cuerpo que da acreditación a las escuelas y universidades en California, ha aprobado nuestra escuela por un

Los Angeles Museum of
the Holocaust
While at the Los Angeles Museum of the
Holocaust on February 5, 2013, eighth grade
students from King-Chávez Academy of
Excellence listen carefully to the story of Sol
Berger, a holocaust survivor, as he tells his
experiences of the Holocaust while living in
Poland during the reign of terror of the Nazis.
Leyenda: Mientras que en el Museo del
Holocausto de Los Angeles el 5 de febrero

ELD at the Primary
Here at King-Chávez Primary Academy,
teachers and students have been working
hard to implement our new ELD (English
Language Development) program. With a
large population of Spanish-speaking students, it is important to target their English
language proficiency in all areas. Every
day, students have ELD from 8:15-8:45 in
the morning. Some stay with their regular
classroom teacher, while others go to another classroom. The program focuses on all
four domains of the English-language, which
consists of: listening, speaking, reading, and
writing. Teachers conduct a variety of activities and lessons in all areas in order to improve the levels of English proficiency for all
students. Also, some of the games and strategies that we practice are geared towards
helping our kids get prepared for the CELDT
(California English Language Development
Test) that occurs once a year. The CELDT
ultimately determines what level of ELD the
child is placed in. Students are grouped according to their level.
It has been extremely rewarding to see
all the growth and progress that the children
have made since they have been practicing
ELD every day. They are using more intricate
vocabulary, correcting their verb tenses,
and appear to have more confidence when
speaking in front of their peers and in the
classroom. The program is a work-in-progress, but the improvement thus far has been
well worth it! This is just one of the many
great things that students, teachers, and
staff are participating in at KCPA.

Aquí en King-Chávez Primary Academy,
profesores y estudiantes han estado trabajando duro para implementar nuestro nuevo
programa de ELD (Desarrollo del Idioma Inglés). Con una gran población de estudiantes
de habla hispana, es importante apuntar su
dominio del idioma Inglés en todas las áreas.
Todos los días, los estudiantes tienen ELD
de 08:15-08:45. Algunos se quedan con su
maestro de aula regular,mientras que otros
van a otra clase. El programa se centra en
los cuatro dominios del idioma Inglés, que
consiste en: escuchar,hablar, leer y escribir.
Los maestros llevan a cabo una variedad de
actividades y experiencias en todos los ámbitos con el fin demejorar los niveles de dominio del Inglés para todos los estudiantes.
Además, algunos de los juegos y estrategias
que practicamosestán orientados a ayudar a
nuestros niños a prepararse para el CELDT
(Examen de Desarrollo del Idioma Inglés),
que ocurre una vez al año. El CELDT determina en última instancia el nivel de ELD que
el niño se coloca pulg Los estudiantes se

Ha sido muy gratificante ver todo el crecimiento y el progreso que los niños han
hecho, ya que han estado practicando ELDtodos los días. Están utilizando un vocabulario más complejo, corrigiendo sus tiempos
verbales, y parecen tener más confianza al
hablar delante de sus compañeros y en el
aula. El programa es un trabajo en un progreso, pero el progreso hasta ahora ha valido
la pena! Esta es sólo una de las muchas cosas que los estudiantes, maestros y personal
están participando en al KCPA.

Moving Forward with CCTE

For the first time in King-Chávez Community High School history, a group of
students are catching a long flight from San
Diego to Italy this coming October!
What does this process look like? It starts
with students raising $1,600 each to pay for
flight, train tickets, and museum entrances.
Mrs.Threatt, KCCHS’s Italian teacher, is providing many ways to fundraise. From selling
food (crepes, Jamba Juice, chips, and other
lunch-time snacks) at both KCCHS campuses to holding garage sales, babysitting
nights, and movie nights, these students are
doing it all.
While in Italy, students will be based in
Bologna (north-east Italy) with host families.
Throughout the twelve-day trip, students will
visit many cities, including, but not limited
to: Rome, Pisa, Florence, Venice, Verona and,
Milan. Maria Duarte, an eleventh grader at
KCCHS, says, “I’m looking forward to seeing the Trevi Fountain and the Colosseum in
Rome.”
Tenth grader, Moises Mariscal, says, “I
hope to eat new food, and meet different
people as well as learn about the Italian lifestyle.”
Mrs.Threatt said, “My main goal is for students to grasp the differences in lifestyle and
culture between here and Italy, and I believe
that through this experience they will learn
more about themselves, and the challenges
they face will help them grow as individuals.
On top of all this, they will get to use their
language skills with native Italians!” Overall,
it is sure to be an experience that both the
students and teachers will never forget!

¡Por primera vez en la historia de la preparatoria King-Chávez, un grupo de estudiantes tomaran un vuelo largo de San Diego a
Italia este octubre entrante!
¿Como se mira este proceso? Comienza
con los estudiantes recaudando $1,600
cada uno para pagar su boleto de avión, boletos de tren y entradas a museos. La Sra.
Threatt, maestra de italiano de KCCHS, esta

King-Chávez Community High School
is proud to announce the launch of our
first Career, College, and Technical Education Program (CCTE). The program will
focus on The Arts, Media, and Entertainment Sector, with an emphasis on Multimedia and Broadcast Journalism pathways.
The CCTE curriculum is standards-based
with rigorous academics applied and instructed through real-world applications.
The program is comprised of a sequence of
courses—beginning, intermediate, and capstone. These courses provide high school
students with the skills necessary to succeed
in post-secondary and/or college education, entry-level employment, and/or career
advancement. The instructional integration
of academic and workplace skills provides
career awareness and exploration, including
paid and un-paid internship opportunities.
The CCTE program will prepare students
for 21st century challenges and opportunities. To ensure a successful transition from
the critical years of childhood to young
skills needed to become responsible citizens, contributing members of society, and
gainfully employed. This is achieved through

Holtville, CA
On May 8, 2013, fifty King-Chávez Community High School students, with the
help of Border Angels and Chicano Studies
teacher, Ms. Susie Sanchez Valenzuela, and
art teacher, Ms. Kappi Wright, embarked on
a haunting trip to the Imperial Valley desert
and Holtville, CA. Their aim was to experience the controversial plight of those who
cross the border illegally and to visit a cemetery filled with those who did not survive
their journey to their American dream. All
students brought with them one gallon of
water and their open minds, ready to experience something that many do not survive on
their own.
Their first stop was the Holtville cemetery,
which is actually closed to the public because of its controversial nature. Students
left hand-painted crosses on many of the
graves of the over 600 John and Jane Does,
pauper’s graves, most of which contained
the bodies of unidentified migrants. The
landscape was bare, aside from warnings of
unstable ground conditions and unadorned
cement blocks that distinguish one grave
from the next in the barren field. As they
walked, they understood the reason for the
trip. The graves cast an unexpected gloom
over the students.
The second of three stops was near a
former Vietnam War landing strip along the
border. Here, students left gallons of water
throughout the brush. Students spent a few
moments in reflection, sticking their hands
through the fence, feeling the similitude of
the air on either side of the fence. At that
spot, students were able to talk to a man living on the Mexican side of the border about
what he sees every night living only a few
feet away from the fence.
The final destination was a commonly used
night crossing point. As they walked down
he baren landscape, students left more gallons of water near rocks and bushes. They
found sleeping bags, children’s shoes, toothbrushes, soap, tuna cans, backpacks, and
shotgun shells, all indications that several
people had been there not long before. After
only about forty minutes of walking in the
mild heat of May, the students were dehydrated, tired, and weak. The students rode
back home in complete silence, definitely
changed.
La mañana del 8 de Mayo,
cincuenta estudiantes de King Chávez
Community High School con ayuda de los
Ángeles de la Frontera y las maestras Sánchez y Wright, embarcaron en una excursión
al desierto del Valle Imperial y Holtville, CA.
El objetivo fue de obtener un mejor entendimiento de los riesgos de cruzar la frontera
ilegalmente, al igual que visitar un panteón
lleno de cuerpos de aquellos que no lograron
alcanzar el sueño Americano. Todos los estudiantes llevaron consigo un galón de agua
y sus mentas abiertas, listos para experimentar algo que muchos no sobreviven en
sí mismo.
La primera parada fue el panteón de Holtville, que de hecho, está cerrado al público
por la controversia que ha causado en los

Mexicano sobre las historias que ha colectado al pasar de los años viviendo a tan solo
pies de los Estados Unidos.
La última parada fue un punto en el desierto
que es cruzado frecuentemente. Los alumnos dejaron más galones para los migrantes
y al caminar encontraron mochilas, zapatos
de niños, jabón, latas de atún, y cartuchos
de escopeta, indicaciones que alguien había
cruzado recientemente. Después de poco
tiempo caminando los estudiantes ya estaban cansados y deshidratados y débiles
por el calor del desierto. Los estudiantes
regresaron a casa en completo silencio, definitivamente cambiados

Summer Conservation
According to a Native American proverb,
“We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.” Our
planet is ours to protect, cherish, and honor.
Every summer at King-Chávez Preparatory Summer Conservation Academy (SCA)
students learn ways they can conserve our
precious resources such as freshwater and
the ocean through field trips, experiments,
and camping. We have visited the United
States Geological Survey to learn how water
scientists use and protect aquifers and protect endangered species. We traveled 600
miles away to discover the source of our
water, the Colorado River. When the SCA students learned how far water must travel to
get to our sinks, swimming pools, and water
fountains, they were shocked! SCA students
learn hands-on why it is important to work
hard to save water and our planet.
Last summer, SCA took a camping adventure to the Channel Islands. We camped out
in tents, went for beautiful hikes, and saw
about 100 Island Foxes. On the second day,
SCA students went sea kayaking. They were
so brave! They kayaked through sea caves
as waves crashed up against the rocks. We
snorkeled through a kelp forest and saw
amazing sea creatures. To top it off, SCA students climbed one of the tallest mountains
on the island just to see what it was like from
the top. Two summers ago, we camped in
the mountains. Last summer, we camped on
an island, and this summer we are going to
camp on the beach! SCA students have had
a wealth of outdoor experiences.
Summer Conservation Academy students
apply to SCA when they are 6th graders.
This year, Jamilah Bellinger, Omar Gonzalez,
Stephanie Monarrez, Alejandro Zaragoza,
and Isaac Mariscal will be the first group
of students to spend three years in the program. When they are in high school, they
can return as SCA High School Mentors like
Leonardo Quintero and Adeline “Little Red”
Sanchez. Leo and Adeline were my first
SCA mentors. They spent last summer going on field trips with us, helping students
with their research projects, and being
there for their younger SCA brothers and
sisters. All SCA students are encouraged
to return as mentors when they are in high
school because, not only is it good for the
younger students, it will show universities
that they were dedicated to their community.

El verano pasado, SCA tomaron una aventara cuando se fueron acampar a Channel
Islands (Islas Canales). Nosotros acampamos en tiendas de campaña, fuimos a
caminatas muy hermosas, y observamos
como 100 Zorros de la Isla. El segundo día,
los estudiantes de SCA fueron al mar en un
cayac. ¡Ellos fueron muy valientes! Ellos se
pasearon en cayac a través de las cavernas
del mar al mismo tiempo que las olas chocaban contra las piedras. También estábamos
usando snorquel (tubo de respiración) a
través del bosque de alga marina y miramos
asombrantes criaturas marinas. También
los estudiantes de SCA escalaron una de las
montañas más altas de la isla simplemente
para ver cómo se miraba todo de lo más
alto. ¡Hace dos veranos, acampamos en las
montañas¡ ¡El verano pasado, acampamos
en una isla, y este verano vamos acampar en
la playa! Los estudiantes de SCA han tenido
una abundancia de experiencias al aire libre.

I remember the first time I went away from
my parents for a week. One whole week. I was
only twelve. It felt weird being apart from my
mom and dad for so long. At the same time,
I was excited. I was going to YMCA camp
with King-Chávez Preparatory Academy.
I wondered if I was the only one who was
scared, worried, and anxious. At my camp,
we were not alone. There were kids from all
over the place. I immediately got that claustrophobia feeling having to interact with new
people. It wasn’t that bad after all. I got to
bunk with girls I didn’t know. We went on
long hikes, and the food was actually really good. We even got to tell scary stories.
I had a lot of fun, and I will never forget it
Now I have a cousin and a little God-sister at
KCP who went to the 6th Grade YMCA Camp
Marston. Before the trip, my cousin Leslie
Aparicio, a sixth grader at King-Chávez Preparatory said, “I feel nervous because I’m going to miss my family. I have been away from
home to my aunt’s house, but it’s different.”
My God-sister, Lilibeth Juarez, another
sixth grader at KCP, said that she was excited, but kind of scared. She said that she
was ready for camp. After the trip she said
that she is sure that she “will remember
this week forever.” They spent the week,
as I did, with bunk-mates, laughter, hikes,
and telling scary stories around a camp
fire. Camp truly is an unforgettable experience. Luckily, it happens every year.
Yo recuerdo la primera vez cuando partí
de con mis padres por una semana. Una
semana completa. Yo solo tenía doce
años. Me sentí rara el estar apartada de
mi mamá y mi papá por tan largo tiempo.
Al mismo tiempo, estaba muy emocionada. Iba ir al campamento YMCA con
King-Chávez Preparatory Academy.
Me pregunte si yo era la única que tenía
miedo, preocupación y ansiedad. En mi
campamento, no estábamos solos. Había
niños y niñas de todos lugares. Inmediatamente empecé a sentir claustrofobia al
tener que interactuar con personas nuevas.
Después de todo no fue tan mal. Me toco
dormir con niñas que no conocía. Fuimos a
caminatas largas, y la comida deberás estaba buena. Contamos cuentos espantosos.
Me divertí mucho, y nunca se me olvidara.
Ahora tengo una prima y una hija de mis
padrinos en KCP que fueron al Campamento Marston de YMCA. Antes del viaje,
mi prima Leslie Aparicio, estudiante de
6to grado en King-Chávez Preparatory dijo
“me siento nerviosa porque voy a extrañar
a mi familia. He estado afuera de mi casa
a la casa de mi tía, pero es diferente.”
Lilibeth Juárez, hija de mis padrinos que
es otra estudiante de KCP, dijo que ella
estaba emocionada, pero tenía un poco
de miedo. Ella dijo que estaba lista para
el campamento. Después del viaje ella
dijo que estaba segura que “se acordara
de esta semana para siempre.” Se pasaron la semana, como yo lo hice, con compañeras de dormitorio, muchas sonrisas,
caminatas, y el contar cuentos espantosos
alrededor de la fogata. Es campamento es
verdaderamente, una experiencia inolvidable. Afortunadamente, esto pasa cada año.

Sometimes when you move into a new
place, all you need is a little paint to make
it look like new; other times, you need
to remodel. For several years now, the
King-Chávez Primary, Arts, and Athletics Academies at the “Blue School,” as it
is so lovingly named, have been utilizing a
grand auditorium in far greater need than
the minor touch-ups the school could afford up until now. “The paint was dingy,
chairs rusted, and the audio/video equipment was extremely out-dated. The space
was a source of anxiety, and we wanted a
community space that we could all be proud
of,” said principal of King-Chávez Arts & Athletics Academies, Mr. Scott Worthing. This
year, with the help of the KC Arts Academy
Improvement Grant, and much determination, the “Blue School” was able to remodel.
What started out as a vision in 2005,
has turned into a eight-year process and a
three-year execution that has culminated in
a complete renovation of the old auditorium
into a state-of-the-art auditorium with a
grand re-opening on June 12, 2013.
At the grand re-opening, visitors experienced a myriad of murals, “the crown
jewel,” as Mr. Worthing puts it, painted by
Salvador Barajas and Francisco Contreras,
honoring the farm workers movement and
the civil rights movement, including portraits
of our namesakes, Cesar Chávez and Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. The space has been
repainted from floor to ceiling and all of the
equipment has been replaced and updated,
including lights, video, and sound.
In addition to being a welcoming place
for all users in the KC community, the auditorium also serves as a tribute to Ramon
“Chunky” Sanchez. The room was dedicated
to Mr. Sanchez on June 12th in honor of his
legacy as a community activist and musician
in the Barrio Logan area.
En ocasiones cuando uno se muda a un
lugar nuevo basta con sólo pintar el lugar
para que se vea como nuevo, algunas veces
se tiene que remodelar. Por muchos años las
Academias de Primaria, Arte y Atletismo
de King-Chávez en la “Escuela Azul”, como
es muy cariñosamente llamada, ha utilizado
un gran auditorio que necesita aun más
que los retoques menores que hasta ahora
ha recibido. “La pintura era sorbida, las sillas oxidadas, y el equipo de audio/video era
muy anticuado. El espacio era una fuente
de ansiedad, y queríamos un espacio de
comunidad del cual pudiéramos estar todos
orgullosos.” Dijo el señor Worthing, director
de las Academias de Arte y Atletismo. Este
año, con la ayuda de la Concesión de Mejora de la Academia de Arte de King-Chavez,
y con mucha determinación de la “Escuela
Azul” se hizo posible remodelar el auditorio.
Lo que empezó como una visión en el año
2005, se ha convertido en un proceso de 8
años y en una ejecución de 3 años que se ha
culminado a ser una completa renovación del
viejo auditorio a un teatro de vanguardia con
su gran reapertura el 12 de Junio del 2003.
En la gran reapertura, los visitantes tuvieron la oportunidad de disfrutar de una
miríada de murales. “La corona de joyas’”
como lo dijo el director Worthing, pintado
por Salvador Barajas y Francisco Contreras, que hace honor al movimiento de los
trabajadores agrícolas y el movimiento por
los derechos civiles, incluye retratos de
nuestros homónimos, Cesar Chavez y el Dr.
Martín Luther King, Jr. El lugar se ha pintado
por completo desde el piso hasta el techo
y todo el quipo ha sido reemplazado y actualizado, incluyendo luces, video y sonido.
Además de ser un lugar acogedor para
todos las personas de la comunidad de
King-Chavez, el auditorio también sirve
como tributo a Ramón “Chunky” Sánchez.
El auditorio fue dedicado al señor Sánchez el 12 de Junio del 2013 en honor

As part of the DREAM arts integration project, fourth-grade King-Chávez Arts and
Athletics students participated in a yearlong reading, writing, and theater program.
As a class, students read and discussed
a book in the popular Clementine series.
The author of the series, Sara Pennypacker, visited fourth-grade classrooms
to teach the students about writing. During a follow-up visit, students shared
their writing with the author and received feedback about their stories.
During weekly sessions with two teaching
artists, students learned theater techniques
and drafted their own scripts, interpreting
the story they read. Students then eagerly
prepared lines and created props and costumes for the June 3rd theater performance.
In addition to their show, students also wrote
responses to literature and abstract art pieces comparing themselves to the main character. Though it was a long time in the making, it was surely something amazing to see.
“The Holding Cell” Production
On April 26, 2013, King-Chávez Community High School’s drama department
had the opportunity to perform “The Holding Cell,” a story that explores the highrisk behavior of drug abuse and addiction.
With the partnership of Say San Diego
representative Karen Lynon, Wake Up Now,
and the help from Millenium Labs, the
drama department and director Ms. Cambria Beilstein was able to push through
countless rehearsals and set construction to put on a play that truly changed the
hearts and lives of all those in attendance.
“The purpose of the play is to raise
awareness about prescription drug abuse
in teens through a cautionary tale,” says
Miguel Vazquez (’14), the assistant director of the production. The play is about
a girl named Skylar who is arrested for
drug possession. The production explores
high-risk behavior that leads teens to tobacco, marijuana, and other drug addiction. It informs people about the dangers
of illegal and prescription drug abuse.
The student cast included: Jocelyn Torres, Denysha Malone, Jesus Ortega, Jose
Burgess, Norberto Garcia, Maria Marcelo, Diana Marcelo, Miguel VasquezAssistant Director, Clara Ambrocio-Stage
Manager, Tania Villegas-Lighting/Costume
Designer, and William Kend-Sound Designer.
As a means to spread this important
message beyond the confines of our was
invited to perform portions of the play for
the San Diego City Council and the Pasadena Playhouse. During their weekend in
Pasadena, students were given the “star
treatment,” including an amazing overnight
hotel stay, delicious meals, tours, and a
walk down legendary Hollywood Boulevard.
The “Holding Cell” was a very informative, wonderful production. It is
a must-watch for all young people.

de Detención”

El 26 de abril de 2013, el departamento
de Drama de la Preparatoria King-Chávez
tuvo la oportunidad de actuar la obra de
teatro, “La Celda de Detención”, una historia que explora el comportamiento del
alto riesgo del uso y abuso de drogas. En
asociación con Karen Lynon represéntate
de Say San Diego, “Wake Up Now”, y la
ayuda de “Millenium Labs”, el departamento de drama y su directora, la Srta.
Beilstein, fueron capaz de llevar acabo sin
números de ensayos y construir una obra
de teatro que verdaderamente cambio los
corazones y vidas de todos los presentes.
Las Obras de Teatro de Clementina
Como parte del proyecto DREAM de integración de artes, los estudiantes de
cuarto grado de las academias de KingChávez Arte y Atletismo participaron
en un programa de lectura, escritura y
teatro por un año entero. Los estudiantes
se reúnen para leer y discutir sobre un libro dentro de la serie de Clementina.
La autora de la serie, Sara Pennypacker, visitó los salones de cuarto grado
y les enseño a los estudiantes sobre la
escritura. Durante una visita de seguimiento los estudiantes compartieron sus
escrituras con la autora y recibieron comentarios y consejos por parte de la autora sobre las historias que escribieron.
Durante dos sesiones semanales con dos
artistas de la enseñanza, los estudiantes
aprendieron técnicas de teatro y redactaron
sus propias escrituras e interpretaron la historia que escribieron. Los estudiantes entonces entusiasmadamente prepararon líneas
y crearon utilería y vestuario para el espectáculo que se llevará acabo en el teatro
el 3 de Junio. Además de su actuación, los
estudiantes también escribieron sus reacciones sobre la literatura y piezas abstractas
de arte, comparándose a sí mismos al personaje principal. Aunque fue un programa
que duró mucho tiempo para presentarse,
sin duda fue algo increíble de presenciar.
“El propósito de la obra de teatro es crear
conciencia del abuso de medicamentos
recetados entre jóvenes a través de una
historia de precaución,” comento Miguel
Vázquez (’14), director asistente de la una
producción. La obra es sobre una joven
llamada Skylar que es arrestada por posesión de droga. La producción explora el
comportamiento del alto riesgo que conduce a los jóvenes a la adición del tabaco,
marihuana, y otras drogas. Informa a las
personas sobre el peligro del abuso de drogas ilegales y medicamentos recetados.

Como medio de difundir este mensaje
importante más allá de los confines de
nuestra población estudiantil, el departamento de drama fue invitado a presentar
partes de la obra de teatro al Ayuntamiento
de la ciudad de San Diego y en “Pasadena
Playhouse.” Durante su fin de semana en
Pasadena, los estudiantes recibieron el
“trato de estrellas,” incluyendo el poder
pasar la noche en un sorprendente hotel,
comidas deliciosas, recorridos, y un paseo
por el legendario Hollywood Boulevard.
“La Celda de Detención” fue una producción maravillosa y muy informativa. Es una
obra que deber ser vista por todos los jóvenes.

Dance Geekz

Dancing has seemingly been around ever
since humanity learned how to walk upright.
Over the years, many kinds of dancing have
been created from the beauty of ballet to the
creativity of hip-hop. History says that dance
has been part of human culture since prehistoric times. Archeology traces dance paintings from the Indian and Egyptian tombs to
3300 B.C.
Professional dancers train and practice
every day for an average of six hours. Seiha
Vor, a dance instructor from King-Chávez
Preparatory, who runs a program called
TranscenDANCE, is seemingly always practicing his moves. He doesn’t only dance
because it is his passion, he dances for the
sport. Out of Mr. Vor’s passion and experience, Dance Geekz was born in 2008. We
were dancers in its first generation.
He created Dance Geekz “to bring kids
together who have a passion for dancing.”
They aren’t just an after-school dancing
club; these kids perform. Dance Geekz’s first
appearance was at the Lyceum Theater in
a worldwide traveling show called Kumba
Fest.
Dance Geekz has been on the scene for
four years now. “We dance to express, not
impress,” said Mr. Vor. Even now that we are
juniors in high school, we still go out to support the Dance Geekz when they perform.
Their passion and strength as a group is
clear.
Mr. Vor has been a positive role model
for many of his students, by teaching them
about music, dance, and poetry. He is living
his dream as a dance teacher and is now
patiently waiting to see what challenges
he will take on next. “Life is dancing,” he
says. “If we have a dance floor, many will
dance. Some will get mad when the rhythm
changes, but life is changing all the time.”
His program was created to inspire kids to
try something different or new. Dancing has
not only changed the Dance Geekz, but it has
the power to change the world little by little.
Aparentemente el baile ha estado presente desde que la humanidad aprendió
a caminar hacia arriba. Durante los años,
diferentes clases de bailes han sido creados desde la belleza del ballet hasta la
creatividad del hip-hop. La historia dice
que el baile ha sido parte de la cultura humana desde los tiempos prehistóricos. La
arqueología delinea las pinturas de baile de

Not In Our School
Not In Our School (NIOS) is an antibullying organization that is spreading its
message across the country. During NIOS
presentations, students and teachers share
stories, join together, and take action to
create safe schools, free from stereotypes,
intolerance, and hate. “My experience in
NIOS was great. It was fun working with
other kids to end bullying,” said Dyna Sandoval (’15), one of the first students to experience the program’s implementation.
King-Chavez Community High School
began the NIOS initiative last year with
the freshmen class. It was made possible
through a grant that was received by Not
In Our Town. Last year, Coach Bradshaw,
Ms. Morton, and Ms. Sanchez, the school
counselor, applied for this grant and were
awarded the funds to host this event. As
a result, many of our current sophomores
have experienced change in the way they
think and behave with others on and off
of the campus. “Joining NIOS has taught
me how to be a leader,” said Kimberly Jimenez (’15). “It has helped my communication skills,” said Jovanna Sanchez (’15).
Recently, the Health and Human Services
Agency and the Health Resources and Services Administration contacted the counseling team to share their positive results at a
community conference on Saturday, June
1st at King-Chavez Preparatory Academy.
The conference contained workshops for
students and parents, a community resource
fair, prizes, and keynote speaker, Mara Madrigal-Weiss of the San Diego County Office of
Education. The resounding message is that
together, we can inspire change. Together,
we can make the world a better place to live.
No en Nuestra Escuela

Not In Our School (N.I.O.S) es una organización contra el acoso escolar (bullying)
que está extendiendo su mensaje por todo el
país. A través de las presentaciones de NIOS,
estudiantes y profesores comparten historias, se unen y toman medidas para crear
escuelas seguras, libres de estereotipos, y
combaten la intolerancia y el odio. “Mi experiencia en NIOS fue genial. Fue muy divertido
trabajar con otros estudiantes para poner fin
a la intimidación escolar,” comento Dina Sandoval (‘15), una de las primeras estudiantes
al unirse a la implementación del programa.

Kolor of Love
On Thursday, May 16, 2013, the “Blue
School” that houses King-Chávez Primary,
Arts, and Athletics Academies held its
first student art auction. The art was produced through the Boy’s After School Program on campus. They had been working
for months creating pieces that “speak to
people.” The auction began with bids beginning at $5. In a single night, the students
sold forty-one paintings and raised over
$1300 on their artwork. All of the money
went right back into the program to pay
for more supplies. This event exceeded all
expectations and confirmed the quality of
students and faculty that make up the KingChávez Neighborhood of Schools family.

El Jueves, 16 de mayo 2013, en la “Blue
School” que aloja King-Chávez Primaria,
Artes y Atletismo tuvieron su primer subasta de arte de los estudiantes. El arte se
produjo a través del Programa Después
de la Escuela. Habían estado trabajando
desde hace meses la creación de piezas
que “conecta con la gente.” La subasta se
inició con las ofertas que comienzan en $ 5.
En una sola noche, los estudiantes vendieron cuarenta y uno cuadros y recaudaron
más de $ 1 300 en sus ilustraciones. Todo
el dinero fue a la derecha de nuevo en el
programa de pagar por más suministros.
Este evento superó todas las expectativas y confirmó la calidad de los estudiantes y profesores que componen el KingChávez Barrio de la familia de las Escuelas.

Baseball Game
Anthony Johnson, King-Chávez Preparatory Vice-Principal and assistant baseball
coach at San Diego State University, organized a Big Brother/Big Sister program, culminating in a baseball game at SDSU on May
10, 2013. Students from KCP and KC Arts and
Athletics Academies enjoyed a free baseball
game, featuring SDSU vs. Air Force Academy.
“I started the program seven years ago,
not only at KCP, but also at KC Primary,
Arts, and Athletics,” said Coach Johnson.
“The students were selected by the school
counselors and directors as well as myself,” he said, reflecting on his KC crew.
As a coach for the SDSU Baseball team,
the SDSU Softball team, and the SDSU
Women’s Lacrosse team for the past ten
years, it was easy for him to select the
mentors from among his college students.
Fortunately, students are usually able to
stick with the same Big Brother or Sister as
long as they are both a part of the program.
As much fun as this is for the kids, Coach
Johnson said, “the Big Brothers/Sisters
get just as much joy and happiness.” Let’s
here it for programs that make a difference!

Athletics disfrutaron un juego de beisbol
gratis, presentando a SDSU contra Air Force
Academy (Academia de la Fuerza Aérea).
“Yo comencé este programa hace siete
años, no solamente para en KC Prep, pero
también en KC Primary, Arts y Athletics,”
dice Entrenador Johnson. “Los estudiantes
fueron seleccionados por los consejeros y
directores de las escuelas y por mí también,”
dice el, al reflejar sobre su grupo de KC.

Leslie Cedillo, a senior of the first graduating class of 2013 from King-Chávez Community High School will be attending Oregon State University in the fall of 2013. She
is the first of a handful of students to travel
out of the state for college. “I applied in December, I believe, and I found out that I was
accepted in January,” Leslie said, beaming.
Along with Oregon State University, Leslie
was also been accepted to Grand Canyon
University in Arizona and Johnson and Wales
University in Florida. It is apparent that her
dreams for college were always outside of
the state of California.
“I chose Oregon State University because
I wanted something different, a different
environment. I fell in love with the campus
when I visited as well,” said Leslie, reflecting
on the trip that she took with Principal Jeb
Hubbs, the counselors, and a group of other
potential applicants earlier in the school year.
Right now, she is excited about everything
from football games to making new friends
to just experiencing a new environment. She
does have some fears about being so far
away from her family and her home, but she
says, “I’ll get used to it. I can do it.”
As far as her future career goes, Leslie has
not decided what she wants to do, but she
plans on majoring in Psychology. “I just want
to help people,” she said.
Good luck to Leslie and the other KCCHS
graduates going off to college, wherever
they may roam.

Roberto Hernandez
Many people don’t seem to understand
how hard it is to try to achieve the highest overall grade point average (GPA) in an
entire school. People don’t know about all
of the hard work, extra time studying, and
long nights that some students put in to
earn the grades to be on top. The dedication that drives one to be able to walk across
the stage on graduation day with the title of
Salutatorian was enough for current senior
Roberto Hernandez to persevere through all
of the exams and late nights. Though he is
runner-up for Class of 2013 Valedictorian,
he does not regret the late nights and hard
work. “I just wanted to finish and be proud of
the work that I’ve done, and I am proud of the
work that I have put into my education thus
far,” said Roberto, when asked about the
goals he set for himself while in high school.
Roberto has worked extremely hard over
the past four years. While in school, many

students lose focus on what is important and
get caught up in living in the moment. “Over
the past four years, I have put in a lot of hard
work when there is work to be done. I didn’t
look for excuses, but for results. I kept my eye
on the prize because I didn’t want to end up
at a dead end job,” Roberto said. “I excelled
in all of my classes, and I did all of the work
required of me and then some extra. I didn’t
lose sight of what was really important.”
In the fall of 2013, Roberto will attend University of California, Riverside for college
and wants to eventually get his master’s
degree. For his career, Roberto would like
to find work at an engineering firm, maybe
even NASA. Roberto has accomplished a lot
throughout his high school years, and there is
no doubt that he will one day become a very
successful man. Congratulations to the Class
of 2013’s Salutatorian, Roberto Hernandez.
It is an extremely huge accomplishment to
be the Valedictorian of the graduating Class
of 2013, the first graduating class from
King-Chávez Community High School.
Jacquelyne Vera has had many sleepless
nights, lots of stress, and tears shed to get
to where she is today, but it was all worth it.
“Missing school dances to study for the
SAT, spending my breaks working on college and scholarship applications, I lost
friends because of my strong academic
agenda,” says Jackie when reflected over
the past year, the fight to the finish line.
Hard work and dedication has led her to
where she is now, and she has the opportunity to walk across the stage on graduation day as our first ever Valedictorian. Her
name is a part of the history we are making
on our campus and within our organization.
Jackie has worked very hard over the past
four years. She has always thought of her
future and kept her goals in mind. “My goals
were to have a Grade Point Average higher
than a 3.8, and get accepted to my two dream
schools, University of California, Santa Cruz,
and San Francisco State University. I got accepted to both schools! I got accepted to
almost every school I have applied to,” said
Jackie, remarking her successful accomplishments. She will be attending UC Santa
Cruz and is going to be a proud Banana Slug.

Muchas personas no llegan a entender
lo difícil que es lograr el más alto promedio de calificación general (GPA) de toda la
escuela. Las personas no saben de todo el
trabajo, tiempo extra de estudio, y las largas
noches que algunos estudiantes han llevado
acabo para recibir las calificaciones para ser
el mejor. La dedicación que nos impulsa a
poder caminar a través del escenario el día
de graduación con el titulo de “Saludictorian” fue suficiente para que el actual estudiante del 12º grado Roberto Hernández
preservara a través de todos sus exámenes
y largas noches. Aunque llego a ser el subcampeón para el titulo “Valedictorian” de
la clase del 2013, el no se arrepiente de
las largas noches y todo su trabajo. “Solo
quiero terminar y estar orgulloso de todo
el trabajo que he hecho, y estoy orgulloso

Es un gran logro ser el Valedictorian de la
Clase graduante de 2013, la primera promoción de King-Chávez Community High School.
Jacquelyne Vera ha tenido muchas noches
sin dormir, estrés y lágrimas derramada para
llegar a donde está hoy, pero valió la pena.
“Faltando bailes de la escuela para estudiar para el SAT, usando mi tiempo libre
trabajando en solicitudes de becas y aplicaciones para la universidad, he perdido
amigos enfocándome in mi agenda académica”, dice Jackie cuando se refleja
en el último año en su lucha para la línea
final. El trabajo duro y dedicación la ha llevado a donde está ahora, y ella tiene la
oportunidad de caminar por el escenario el
día de graduación como nuestra primera
Valedictorian. Su nombre será parte de la

quisiera encontrar un trabajo en una empresa de ingeniería, posiblemente en NASA.
Roberto ha logrado mucho a través de sus
años en la preparatoria, y no hay duda
que algún día se convertirá en un hombre

Jamilah Belinger
Jamilah Bellinger is an eighth grader at
King-Chávez Preparatory Academy. She
is a dedicated and conscientious young
woman who is dedicated to the idea that
everyone should be treated equally no matter what. Jamilah is an active member of
her campus community. She has dedicated
her summer time to the Summer Conservation Academy for the past three years.
Jamilah is also an advanced math student
who goes above and beyond in the classroom. She would do anything to support
someone in need. She is going to change
the world with her intellect and motivation!

Stephanie Monarrez
Stephanie Monarrez is an eighth grader
at King-Chávez Preparatory Academy. She
has been an active member of the Summer Conservation Academy for three years.
She deeply cares for the environment and
saving endangered species such as sea
turtles. Stephanie is a dedicated student,
especially in Algebra. For the past two years,
she was a mathlete and an advanced algebra student who competed in several
math competitions throughout San Diego
County. Stephanie defines perseverance.
She never gives up on what she’s doing and
always puts an added touch of creativity

Teacher Induction
This school year, King-Chávez launched
its very own state-approved Induction program so that it can support its new teachers in attaining a Clear California teaching
credential. All California teachers need to
complete an Induction program in order
to clear their teaching credentials. There
are many benefits of having our own
teacher Induction program; here are three:
First, having our own program gives us the
opportunity to pair newer teachers with veteran mentor teachers that teach at the same
school. This ensures that the new teachers have ample opportunities to work with
their mentor. In addition, mentor teachers
have demonstrated excellence in our own
King-Chávez classrooms, which means they
are able to share best practices with their
newer colleagues that will accelerate the
development of their own teaching practice.
Second, many of the tasks that teachers complete in our Induction program count
towards professional development that all
King-Chávez teachers are asked to do. This
means that we can help our teachers cut
down on “extra” work so that they can have
the time they need to plan lessons, prepare
resources, teach clubs, and attend afterschool events. For example, teachers in the
Induction program set annual goals for developing their teaching practice according to
the California Standards for the Teaching Profession. This rigorous process stands in for
establishing an annual SMART Goal, which
all King-Chávez teachers are asked to do.
Finally, our program enables us to create pathways for teacher leadership for
our veteran teachers by providing them
with opportunities to mentor newer colleagues. Our Mentor teachers participate
in a Professional Learning Community and
receive top-quality professional development through The New Teacher Center in
order to support their mentoring practice.
Each King-Chávez Academy has teachers and mentors participating in Induction

Este año escolar, King-Chávez ha lanzado su propio programa de Inducción
aprobado por el estado para que pueda

“Students can tell that you care, and
once they’re comfortable, you’re like a
family member. That’s probably the best
part,” said Mr. Marc Shaw, a new teacher
at King-Chávez Community High School,
speaking about his experience as a firstyear Vaquero. After weekend commutes
from Los Angeles for two years, a teaching position fortunately opened up at
KCCHS, and it was his from the interview.
As an English-Language Arts (ELA)
teacher, Mr. Shaw says that working with
students in this school is different. Students know each other very well, which
has its pros and cons. Mr. Shaw’s teaching

Kevin Bradshaw is a retired American professional basketball player and a current collegiate coach as well as Physical Education
instructor at King-Chávez Community High
School. Though he has found success in life
and career, he has had his share of challenges.
Kevin Bradshaw grew up in Gainesville,
Florida. He played basketball at Buchholz
High School, the Florida Gators, playing
alongside future NBA player, Vernon Maxwell. As a senior in high school, Bradshaw
scored an average of 30.6 points per game.
On January 5, 1991, in a game against
Loyola Marymount, he earned a NCAA Division I record for most points scored in a single game with seventy-two, which was unprecedented. He received a full scholarship,
which allowed him to get a free college education. However, this attention also allowed
him to be seen by agents. In the end, he
made an agreement to play professionally.
Bradshaw played professional basketball in Israel for about eleven years. When
his playing career was over, he became
the first African-American coach in Israel in professional basketball history.
Basketball changed Kevin Bradshaw’s
life. It afforded him with many opportunities to meet people from different cultures
and to travel around the world. It also exposed him to a great many troubles. He
retired because of age then ran “the best”
basketball camps that toured nationwide
and internationally in Israel, providing
world and a way to see new lives, new stories, and new ideas. Personally, ELA used to
be one of my least favorite classes. I didn’t
like it because, for me, it was boring, and I
know that’s how many students feel, but Mr.
Shaw works differently. He keeps it “street
like MC Hammer,” which students appreciate. This year the books and poems we read
made me actually open up my eyes and see
the world from someone else’s perspective.
No institution is perfect, and that means
that everyone has challenges. Mr. Shaw’s
challenges here are balancing the class
work for new students and responsibilities
outside the classroom. One statement from
Shaw that got my attention was, “It’s all
the little things outside the classroom that
make life challenging.” Often students don’t
see all of the extra work that teachers do
outside of the classroom at KCCHS, including lunch duty, department meetings, home
visits, grading, planning, parent-teacher
conferences, letters of recommendation,
and editing student journalism articles…
And their personal lives? Forget about it.
This is King-Chávez, and this is my school,
and we’re like a family here. Mr. Shaw is
one of the many staff members that I admire. I hope that he stays here because
he’s the one teacher that really made
me enjoy a class that I have never liked.

He now coaches, hoping that he can change
young people’s lives for the better and open

In 2012, film director Greg Kappy, presented his labor of love to a small invite-only only
audience, a documentary titled, “Shooting for
Home.” The film follows the journey of Kevin
Bradshaw from high school star to inspirational coach. Although the film isn’t available

“I believe that once people see it, everyone
will be able to take something away from it,”
says Bradshaw. As a man of dignity and honor, there isn’t a single student at our school
who can say that they haven’t learned something from him. We are lucky to have him.

clases que menos me gustaban. A mí no me
gustaba porque para mí, era aburrida, y yo
permitió ser visto por agentes. Al final, llegó
a un acuerdo para jugar profesionalmente.
Bradshaw jugó baloncesto profesional en
Israel cerca de once años. Cuando su carrera había terminado, él se convirtió en el

Young Coyotes Win
Victory as They
Take the
Championships
It’s nice to see them start off young. At
King-Chávez Arts & Athletics Academies,
there have been many young Coyotes playing their soccer hearts out. The KCAA Coyotes played the Championship game against
the Otay Silver Falcons. They emerged victorious with a 2-1 win. “We are playing the
sport we most enjoy, working hard as a team
to have fun and be healthy,” said one of the
coaches. This is their second year playing in
the Chula Vista Elementary School Soccer
League. This is one of the few leagues, if
not the only one, that is an organized soccer
league at an elementary school level. Last
year the team played CoEd in the 2nd Division and went undefeated the whole season
through, culminating with a Championship.
This year was just as successful as they
have won the Chula Vista Soccer League
Championship for the second time in a row.
As Coach Bautista said, “I want to continue
encouraging our kids to do good academically by playing soccer. I want them to apply
their soccer skills in their classrooms, and I
hope they get to understand the importance
of discipline, determination, confidence, and
enthusiasm to win in soccer matches and in
life!”

Es agradable verles comenzar tan jóvenes.
Ha habido muchos Coyotes jóvenes jugándose el corazón en el equipo de fútbol del
programa de las King-Chávez Academias
de Arte y Atletismo. Los Coyotes de KCAA
jugaron en el Campeonato contra los Silver
Falcons de Otay. Salieron victoriosos con un
triunfo de 2-1. “Estamos jugando el deporte
que más nos gusta, trabajando duro como
equipo para divertirnos y estar saludables,”
dijo uno de los entrenadores. Este es su segundo año jugando en la Liga de fútbol de la
escuela primaria de Chula Vista. Ésta es una
de las ligas, si no la única, que ha organizado
una liga de fútbol al nivel primario. El año
pasado el equipo jugo en la segunda división
como equipo mixto y fue invicto durante toda
la temporada hasta el punto culminante de
su Campeonato. Este año fue igual de exitoso
al ganar el Campeonato de la Liga de Fútbol
de Chula Vista por segunda vez consecutiva.
Como dijo el entrenador Bautista, “Quiero
seguir alentado a nuestros niños para hacer
bien académicamente al jugar fútbol. ¡Quiero
que ellos apliquen sus habilidades futbolísticas en sus salones, y espero que lleguen a
comprender la importancia de la disciplina,
determinación, confianza y entusiasmo para
ganar en partidos de fútbol y en la vida!”
The 2012-2013 King-Chávez Community High School Vaquero Track and
Field season was a monumental one in
many ways. Due to the great recruiting efforts of former athletes and Coach Threatt,
the team consisted of nearly thirty participants, by far the largest of any team in
KCCHS history. All involved were motivated
to take the team to the next step. The team
got started early and even came to school
to utilize the new weight room over brain
breaks. The team lifted weights, ran, and
even utilized Ms. Zanzucchi’s weekly Yoga
class each week to prepare for their meets.
The hard work clearly paid off, as the
Boys’ team came in first place in the Apollo
League and will be hanging their first ever
(non-soccer) banner in the hallowed halls
of the “A Street” campus. The Girls’ team
came in a very close second place, but
finished strong by winning their last two
meets. For the first time ever, the team
hopped in the van and headed out to East
County as they were invited to compete in
the Red Hawk Invitational at Mt. Empire
against athletes from all over San Diego.
Every athlete on the team improved
and set new personal records throughout the course of the season, leading
the Vaqueros to have eight Athletes selected to the First and Second team All
League list for their excellent performance.

at KCCHS
King-Chávez Community High School
is approaching the end of its fourth year of
existence. This means that the first batch
of seniors is about to graduate. Throughout the four years, the school has grown,
and so has the athletics department. In
2013, a new sport was added to the KCCHS
repertoire, baseball, under the tutelage
of our resident coaches and baseball enthusiasts, Craig Neu and Victor Murillo.
Although the school is mostly feared for
its competitive and triumphant soccer
team, soon our athletic rivals will fear our

team, soon our athletic rivals will fear our
baseball team as well. In its first season,
the Vaquero sluggers have shown determination by persisting through tough
games even though the scoreboard wasn’t
always on our side. Even though the season ended with more losses than wins,
the team was able to pull together in the
end for a 7-6 win against Liberty during
the final game of the season thanks to a
sixth inning, two-run single by Giovanni
Sandoval-Munoz (’16), bringing home
Raul Ayala (’13) and Steven Gomez (’13).
Just a few months ago Coach Neu and Coach
Murrillo, along with Athletic Director Coach
Gentile, banded together to begin plans to
organize and fund the team. With continued
support from students, staff, leaders, and
community members, along with the determination from the players, there is no doubt
that in the coming years KCCHS will rank
above all others on the Baseball Diamond.

los demás en el Diamante de Béisbol. The annual King-Chávez Arts and Athletics Academies Junior Olympics started a
few years before the physical education instructor Craig Dean took it over as a project.
This is his third year coordinating the three
to four days of whole-class and individual
competition of students within all grade levels. This year’s competition takes place June
17th through June 20th.
Throughout the school year, Coach Dean
uses the physical education program to
teach students a multitude of skills, many
of them focusing on sports and athletics,
always with an emphasis on good sportsmanship. Weeks before the event, each
classroom chose a country that they would
represent during the Junior Olympics. The
students studied different aspects of their
chosen countries, learning everything from
food to culture.
The final day students participate in tugof-war competitions between the classes,
commencing with an awards ceremony that
recognizes individual and class winners.
And, just like in the Olympics, students stand
on Olympian podiums where they are recognized in front of their classmates, teachers,
and families and receive their hard-earned
medals.
Olimpiadas Menores
Las olimpiadas menores anuales de las
academias de Arte y Atletismo de KingChávez comenzaron varios años antes de
que el entrenador de educación física, Craig
Dean las tomara como un proyecto. Este
será su tercer año coordinando los días de

igual que en los juegos olímpicos los estudiantes se pararán sobre podios olímpicos
en donde se les reconocerá y recibirán sus
merecidas medallas enfrente de sus compañeros de clase, profesores, y familias.

Five years, two gold medals, one bronze
medal, and one silver medal later. KingChávez Academy of Excellence Colorguard
team is still a force to be reckoned with.
Colorguard is a competitive sports program
with goal driven, dedicated, and disciplined
students who practice ten months a year, six
days a week, and three hours a day. They
are a dedicated group of students who perform well academically, from the historically
gang-ridden area of Logan Heights. The students on the team prove stereotypes wrong
everyday, change the hearts of onlookers,
and inspire students and teachers alike.
Pierre Blocker, a visual and performing arts
teacher at King-Chávez Academy of Excellence, who is also the Colorguard director
with the help of Sheila Adams, has put together a very successful show this season.
The team has won over eight trophies and
took the Silver medal at this year’s Championships. Since 2009, King-Chávez Academy
of Excellence has offered Colorguard to its
students, and the teams have won over thirty-eight trophies, a majority of them being
first place trophies. “The cool thing is that the
judges think that we are a high school when
we’re not. We will be competing in the high
school division even though we are a middle
school,” said Coach Blocker, when asked
what to expect for the upcoming season.
Students on the team gain more than just
the ability to toss a flag and spin a rifle. They
gain skills that they can take with them
for their futures. The team members learn
to be goal oriented, responsible, and learn
the value of teamwork. Tryouts are coming up in June, and any student interested
in joining the Colorguard family at KingChávez Academy of Excellence who is in
the fifth to eighth grade, should talk to the
Colorguard Director, Coach Pierre Blocker.

Cinco años, dos medallas de oro, una
medalla de bronce y una de plata después.
El equipo de Colorguard de King-Chávez
Academia de Excelencia sigue siendo
una fuerza de tener en cuenta. Colorguard
es un programa competitivo de deportes
con el objetivo de tener metas, dedicacion,
y los estudiantes son disciplinados que
practican diez meses al año, seis días a la
semana y tres horas al día. Son un grupo de
estudiantes muy dedicados que son exitos
academicamente, de una zona historicamente conocida de tener pandillas en Logan
Heights. Los estudiantes del equipo quebran
estereotipos todos los días, cambian los
corazones de los espectadores, e inspiran
a los estudiantes y profesores por igual.
Pierre Blocker, un profesor de artes visuales y escénicas en King-Chávez Academia

Co-Ed Cheer squad is truly the pride of the
Vaquero sidelines. From cheering at sporting
events, to pep rallies, showing school spirit,
attending Cheer clinics, fundraising for new
uniforms, and volunteering at the Disneyland run-a-thon, the cheer season is packed
with many activities that show school pride.

muchachas y muchachos, es verdaderamente el orgullo Vaquero de la línea de banda. Desde animar en los eventos deportivos,

This is a story about the journey of a soccer team without a field to call their own
to a team with an undefeated winning
streak. This is a story about a family being forged on and off the field. This is what
it means to be a Vaquero soccer player at
King-Chávez Community High School.
Over the past four years, King-Chávez
Community High School has been building a soccer program from the ground
up. Throughout this time, they have
been very successful, winning over fifty
games. “They set goals that they wanted
to achieve and allowed me to push them
in that direction. Now they are achieving them,” said Coach Kyle Hagenburger.
In the beginning, the team didn’t have a
field to practice on, or even a real place to
hold practice. “I remember running up a
hill by our ‘A Street’ campus in downtown
San Diego because we didn’t have a field
to train on,” said senior Jesus Bastidas.
This past season (season four) was a
success. The team had high expectations,
and all of the hard work they put in during practice and for the past three seasons
started paying off on the field. The team beat
Francis Parker in the Francis Parker Tournament and took home the first place trophy.
Then, they beat El Capitan High School,
showing them the better of the Vaqueros.
They were excited and were preparing
to make this year the best year possible.
The team finished their season undefeated, winning nineteen games. They won first
place in their league for the third straight year
and earned another entry to the CIF playoffs.
Their goal was to make the finals, win, and
go all the way to State. They lost during
semifinals against Mater Dei High School.
Alas, the staff, the players, and the entire
student body continue to be amazed by the
team’s accomplishments over the past year.
They have accomplished so much in a short
amount of time and have dreams to accomplish so much more in the next winning
season to come. They are more than players
on a soccer team, they are a family. That’s
what it means to be a Vaquero soccer player.

equipo de fútbol sin un campo para llamarlo
propio, a un equipo con una racha invicta.
Esta es una historia sobre una familia que
se forjo dentro y fuera del campo. Esto es

fútbol en la preparatoria King-Chávez.
En los últimos cuatro años, la preparatoria

La temporada pasada (cuarta temporada)
fue un exitosa. El equipo tenia altas expectativas, todo el trabajo duro que dieron durante
sus practicas y durante las ultimas tres temporadas finalmente comenzaron a pagar en
el campo. El equipo derroto a Francis Parker
durante el torneo de Francis Parker y se llevo
a casa el trofeo del primer lugar. Después
derrotaron a la preparatoria El Capitan,
enseñándoles lo mejor de los Vaqueros. Estaban emocionados y se estaban preparando
para hacer este año el mejor año posible.
El equipo termino su temporada invicto,
ganando diecinueve juegos. Ganaron el
primer lugar en su liga por tercera año
consecutivo y obtuvieron otra entrada
a los torneos de CIF. Su meta era llegar a
las finales, ganar e ir en camino al Estado.
Perdieron durante semifinales contra la preparatoria Mater Dei. El personal, los jugadores y todo el cuerpo estudiantil continúa
sorprendiéndose por los logros del equipo
en el ultimo año. Han logrado mucho en
tan corto tiempo y tienen sueños de lograr
mucho más en la siguiente temporada
ganadora. Son mas que jugadores en un
equipo de fútbol, son una familia. Eso es lo
significa ser un jugador de fútbol Vaquero.
“Never touched a basketball before,”
those were the words from the KingChávez Community High School Girls’
Basketball Team’s Coach, Paul Ramirez.
This year KCCHS witnessed the first Girls’
Basketball Team, and though they did not
experience a winning season, they did show
growth. From learning how to dribble to scoring fifteen points in a game, these Vaquera
athletes gave it their all. “It was never about
winning,” said Coach Ramirez. Even though
they didn’t win any games, they proved to
their competition that they don’t back down,
and if they don’t win, they still have fun.
“It was challenging,” said Yuritzy Rico, a
Vaquera basketball teammate. “It was an
awesome experience, and I am willing to
repeat it!’ This season was about learning the rules and sizing up the competition; next year it will be an easy take-down.

“Nunca habían tocado un balón antes,”
esas fueron las palabras del entrenador Paúl
Ramírez del equipo de Baloncesto de muchachas de la Preparatoria King-Chávez.
Este año KCCHS fue testigo del primer
equipo de baloncesto de muchachas y
aunque no experimentaron una temporada ganadora, si demostraron crecimiento.
Desde aprender a regatear para anotar
quince puntos en el juego, estas atletas Vaqueras lo dieron todo. “Nunca fue acerca de
ganar,”dijo el entrenador Ramírez. Aunque
nunca ganaron un juego, le comprobaron a
la competencia que no se echan para atrás
y aunque no ganen a un así se divierten.
“Fue difícil,” comento Yuritzi Rico, una
de las jugadoras Vaqueras del equipo de
baloncesto. “¡Fue una experiencia increíble y estaría dispuesta a repetirlo!”
Esta temporada se trato de aprender
las reglas y a evaluar la competencia; el
próximo año será un desmontaje fácil.

When Omar Mercado learned that California was ranked last in education in 1994,
behind all forty-nine states, he decided
that he needed to do something about it.
“As a Californian, I told myself I would work
the rest of my life dedicating my career to
changing this statistic,” he said, reflecting
on his past.
Mr. Mercado attended SDSU for undergrad
and CSUMB for his Special Education credential. He has been a Resource Specialist
for ten years, working with special education
and English-language learner students alike.
“My job allows me to work with a diverse
student population and work hand-in-hand
with some of the best teachers,” he said.
“I’m happy to see Parent Institute for a
Quality Education (PIQE) at King-Chávez
Preparatory Academy as I am a firm believer in literacy and spreading important
information to parents and our students.
Working for King-Chávez Preparatory Academy has been an awesome beginning as we
all strive to be the best for our students and
community,” he said about his recent work.
Currently, Mr. Mercado is co-chair Tlazopilli, which translates to “Joven Noble” or
“Noble youth” at KC Prep with JC Nieblas.
“Our young men learn about cultural roots,
respect, and self-determination.” With this
organization, Mr. Mercado and Mr. Nieblas
take the young men on field trips and try
to encourage the boys to follow through on
their word for their academic and behavioral
success at home and school.
The King-Chávez Arts, Athletics, and
Preparatory Academies’ new after-school
pilot program is focused on Exploration and
Experiential Learning. We are working with
local organizations to give kids the chance
to get out to see and learn about the world,
to try new things that they have never experienced before, and gain new skills they
can implement in the future. Students

exploring photography using iPads, learning
about law enforcement with the San Diego
Police Department, fitness with ABC Boxing, hiking local mountains, and learning
trust, empathy, patience, and responsibility
through horsemanship. We hope that these
experiences help ignite a passion that they
can take with them for the rest of their lives.
Sobreruedas Recycling
The Sobreruedas en el Barrio/ Neighborhood Market had a grand opening Sunday
March 17, 2013. The market is a residentdriven initiative featuring vendors from
the Greater Logan Heights neighborhoods
where many King-Chávez Neighborhood
of Schools’ parents participated in the efforts. The Grand Opening ceremony included performances by the Logan Heights
Library Teen Music Program, Danza Arts
(Ballet Folklorico), and speeches by Mayor
Bob Filner, Council Member David Alvarez,
and School Board Member, Richard Barrera. Later in the day, there were workshops, a free Zumba class, and a Healthy
Cooking demonstration. KCNS parents
took the opportunity to meet Mayor Filner.

de Preparatoria, Arte y Atletismo de KingChávez toma lugar después de escuela y
esta enfocado en el aprendizaje de Exploración y Experimentación. Estamos trajando con organizaciones locales para poder

El Sobreruedas en el Barrio/ Neighborhood Market tuvo una gran apertura el día
Domingo 17 de marzo de 2013. El mercado
ha sido una iniciativa lanzada por residentes con proveedores del Gran Barrio Logan
Heights, donde muchos de los padres de
King-Chávez participaron en los esfuerzos.
La ceremonia de inauguración incluyó actuaciones del Programa de Música de Jóvenes
de la Biblioteca Logan Heights, al igual que
el ballet folklórico de Danza Arts. Además,

Initiative
Patricia Bonilla, an instructional assistant
for the special education program at KingChávez Preparatory Academy, along with
her dedicated students, recently started a
recycling system at the academy to collect
the paper and cardboard waste products
from around the campus that would ordinarily fill our local landfills unnecessarily. “Students help me collect all paper and cardboard from each classroom, plus the office,”
said Ms. Bonilla. That is a total of thirteen
classrooms and daily responsibilities on the
part of the students. For her part, Ms. Bonilla
goes above and beyond by taking the cardboard and paper to a recycling center that
only takes paper products. Her hopes for the
future also include compost bins and a community garden where students and parents
can join in her plight to make KCP a greener
place to be.

de trece salones y responsabilidades diarias
por parte de los estudiantes. Por su parte,
la Srta. Bonilla ella va más allá de lo que
es su trabajo al llevar el cartón y el papel a
un centro de reciclaje que solamente toma
productos de papel. Sus esperanzas para el
futuro también incluyen el de tener cajones
para abono y un jardín comunitario donde
los estudiantes y padres se pueden reunir a
su plan de hacer KCP un lugar verde.

Green Team Leadership:
Natural Leaders Wanted
At King-Chávez Community High School,
we believe that every student is a leader at
school, at home, in the community, or as
part of the effort to save our environment
and promote, healthy, natural, and ecologically sound living and working practices.
In the summer of 2012, we sent two of our
student leaders, Emmanuel Maldonado (’13)
and Jose Valencia (’13), to join forces with
Groundwork San Diego and Green Team
Leadership Corps, an intentionally small program dedicated to environmental restoration, local and global environmental issues,
green employment skills, and hands-on service learning.
“It really was a great experience. I recommend it to everyone. I learned so much.
Everyone should apply,” said current senior
Emmanuel Maldonado.
This summer’s Green Team program will
run from July 1 to August 9, and applications
are open to any student
or her sophomore through senior year in
high school, ages 14-17, residing in the
communities surrounding the Chollas Creek
watershed.
Not only is it a rewarding, fun learning experience, but students are also paid a $250
stipend for their participation and dedication
along with 60+ coveted community service
hours needed for graduation.
Culture Lunch
Mandarin classes prepared cuisine from the
culture of their language of study and offered
up samples of these foods to students during
lunch at both campuses. Students were encouraged to follow traditional, multi-step recipes, to interact with their tasters using their
language of study, and get people interested
in and talking about the region from which
their food was inspired. The event made for
delicious treats and delightful conversation.
There is nothing better than food to get
people talking about culture. This year,
King-Chávez Community High School
embarked on its first ever Culture Lunch
event. At the school, students are offered
several language courses to fulfill their
A-G requirements for college admissions:
Spanish, Italian, and Mandarin. From May
28th to May 31st, students in Ms. Carrillo’s and Ms. Tovar’s Spanish classes, Ms.

Parents Getting Involved
During an event at King-Chávez Preparatory Academy, presenters from the Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE)
helped parents take steps towards being
more involved in their children’s school lives.
Principal Laura Todd, with the help of Resource Specialist Omar Mercado, brought
in PIQE from April 26, 2013 through June
6, 2013 to work with current and incoming parents and teach them the importance of being an involved parent.
During this six-week program, parents
were taught how to dedicate a home study
location and time of day for homework, how
to create ongoing dialog with their kids’
surrounding their academic successes and
challenges, how to discuss children’s college expectations, and much more. Parents who attended and graduated from
the program celebrated with enthusiasm.
According to PIQE, since the program’s inception in 1987, more than 475,000 parents have graduated from the program.
A child whose mother graduated from
the program emphasized how nice it was
to see her mother as a graduate, and she
feels more confident in her future success
now that she knows her mother will be by
her side, helping her, all the way to college.

en King-Chávez Preparatory Academy,

participar más en la vida escolar de sus hijos.

2013 hasta 6 de junio, 2013 para trabajar con los padres actuales y padres
que van entrando y enseñarles la importancia el de ser un padre que participa.
Durante este programa de seis semanas,
a los padres les enseñaron como dedicar un
lugar en casa para estudiar y hora del día
para tarea, como crear un dialogo al corriente con sus hijos que entorna sus logros académicos y sus desafíos, como discutir las
expectativas de sus hijos para la preparatoria y el colegio, y mucho más. Los padres
que participaron y se graduaron del programa celebraron con entusiasmo. Según
PIQE, desde su principio en 1987, más de
475,000 padres han graduado del programa.
Un niño, quien su madre graduó del programa enfatizo que bonito fue el ver a su
madre como un graduado, y ella se siente
más segura de sí misma en el éxito de su
futuro ahora que ella sabe que su madre estará a su lado, ayudándola, hacia el colegio.

43 Aniversario del
Parque Chicano

Chicano Park, located underneath the San
Diego-Coronado Bridge in the Barrio Logan
community, was established on April 22,
1970. It has since been listed on the California Register of Historical Resources since
1997. This year, the park celebrated its fortythird birthday with the annual Chicano Park
Day celebration on April 20, 2013. It is a
day to remember and honor the people who
planted, painted, protected, and transformed
our park. The all-day, yearly event encourages families and local businesses from the
community to come out and enjoy music,
dance, live bands, speakers, a low-rider car
show, vendor booths, kids art workshops,
and this year hosted keynote speaker, Josie
Talamantez, author of “Chicano Park and the
Chicano Park Monumental Murals National
Treasures.”
Every year, King-Chávez Neighborhood of
Schools participates by manning a booth to
help promote our schools and our cause. It is
amazing to see that every year, rain or shine,
thousands of people come out to tour our
park and its artwork and become seeped in
the lively culture and crafts, taking part in
the history and heritage of the park.
Chicano Park isn’t like any other park. It
has history and culture literally painted on
almost every surface. One cannot experience the park without experiencing a little
KC culture as well.
Parque Chicano, localizado debajo del Puente San Diego-Coronado en la comunidad
de Barrio Logan, fue establecido el 22 de
abril, 1970. Ha sido nombrado en el Registro
de California de Recursos Históricos desde
1997. Este año, el parque celebro su año
cuadragésimo-tercero con la celebración
anual del Día del Parque Chicano que fue el
20 de abril, 2013. Es un día para recordar
y honrar a las personas que plantaron, pintaron, protegieron y transformaron nuestro
parque. El evento de todo el día, que se

Cada año, King-Chávez Neighborhood of

escuelas y nuestra causa. Es asombroso el
ver cada año, llueva o no, miles de personas
vienen a dar un recorrido por nuestro parque
y su arte y se involucran en la cultura y
artesanías, tomando parte de la historia y la
herencia del parque.
El Parque Chicano no es como ningún otro
parque. Tiene historia y cultura literalmente
pintada en casi cada superficie. Uno no puede tener la experiencia del parque sin tener
al igual un poco de experiencia de la cultura
de KC.

As the graduating class of 2013 at KingChávez Community High School were
counting down their last days of school,
an unforgettable string of events ushered them through some quintessential
rights of passage. These events included:
Grad Night on May 17th, an overnight trip
to Disneyland to mingle with senior students from all over California; our first
ever Senior Prom on June 8th; and, of
course, Senior Graduation to take place
June 21st at Speckels Theatre at 6:00 pm.
These last few pivotal moments have been
powerful, and we have made memories that
we will never forget, and we have created
bonds that can never be broken. For all of
these reasons, we will never forget where
we came from, and we will always be KingChávez Community High School Vaqueros!

de noche a Disneylandia para convivir con
estudiantes del 12o grado de todo California;
nuestro primer baile del 12o grado (Senior
Prom) el día 8 de junio; y, claro, la Ceremonia
de Graduación que se llevara acabo el día 21
de junio en el Teatro Spreckels a las 6:00 pm.
Estos últimos momentos fundamentales han sido poderosos, y hemos creado
memorias que nunca olvidaremos, y al
igual hemos creado enlaces que nunca
se romperán. Por todas estas razones,

and Community Service Initiative (CSI)
CONNECTING. LEARNING. WORKING.
MISSION STATEMENT: In partnership with community interests and local businesses, provide
students with skills and opportunities that lead to careers, college, and lifelong learning.
The 2012-2013 school year marked the 2nd year of the King-Chávez Community High School Internship and the CSI (Community Service
Initiative) Program. Over 100 students have completed semester-long internships at a variety of local organizations and businesses.
Additionally, all interns have donated over forty-volunteer/community service hours focused on habitat restoration, outdoor education, and
environmental awareness.
We thank our internship mentors and sites for their commitment, support, and dedication to workforce development in our region and for the
life-changing opportunities provided to KCCHS interns.

own initiative to get information on other
animals I had not given her so that she
could speak to the public about them. She

given to her.
Because of Maria’s hard work and enthusiasm, Maria has been asked to extend her
Internship and become a mentor for other
students who are interested in volunteering at the Living Coastal Discovery Center.
She will also have the opportunity to be a
part of the Discovery Channel segment on

“It was great seeing Juan grow from a apprehensive intern
to a confident young man by the end of his internship.
Function Factory can be an intimidating place at first. We
have new clients and patients coming in every hour. And
every hour we come across people with their own amazing
personalities, stories, and approach to life. Over time Juan
was able to break out of his shell and share his own story
with our members as well. Function Factory's partnership
with King-Chávez has been amazing. We feel as though we
are the lucky ones to have these interns spend some time
with us. We learn just as much from them as we hope they
learn from us. Function Factory is a community based
facility and having these great kids come in and be part of
our community is an added benefit. This is the second
semester we have hosted an intern from King-Chávez
Community High School. We will continue to host an intern
as long as KCCHS has their internship program running.

King-Chávez Community High School Community Service initiative (CSI)
In partnership with the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA, San Diego Canyon Lands and the City of San Diego Parks
and Recreation Department, KCCHS Interns volunteered over 30 hours this semester. The CSI projects focused
on removing invasive plants, restoring natural habitat, planting native plants, trail maintenance, and creating a
clean and safe environment in Chollas Creek and Florida Canyon.

AmeriCorps
AmeriCorps Members have been placed at
King-Chávez Neighborhood of School's in a
variety of roles in past years. Members
have been classroom assistants, parent
liaisons, tutors and program leads. If you
are interested in becoming an AmeriCorps
member for the 2013-2014 contact your
local agency.
