Mass Intentions & Memorial Candles
If you would like to have a Mass offered for a particular
Intention or for someone who has died, or if you would like to
dedicate a candle to an intention or a loved one, please call the
parish office. The stipend for the Mass is $10. The candles are
$30 for 1 month, $60 for 6 months, or $90 for one year. Our
office staff will help you find an open date and time for a Mass,
or available candles for dedications.
On exploiting wealth for the good of the poor. Jesus unconventionally loves the
poor. But that does not mean that he hates the rich. He wants to correct the worldly
love of the rich for wealth which consequently hurts the poor. And he wants to
invest the poor with their right to the wealth of earth by teaching the rich concern
for the welfare of the poor.
Jesus set the example of love for the poor by feeding them and caring for their
needs. He protected the widow, the orphan and the slaves. In one Gospel narrative,
Jesus was moved with pity for the widow whose son died. In Jewish culture, a
widow has nothing except hope based on a male patron. The male patron can be the
widower’s brother or the widow’s oldest son. In this case, the oldest son was her
hope. But he, too, was gone. Moved with pity for the widow’s situation, he raised
the widow’s son from the dead.
There are several other miracles Jesus did to alleviate the poor from their situation.
The blind Bartimaeus was given sight; the woman with hemorrhage was healed; the
paralytic man who was lowered from the roof was able to walk; etc.
Now the same love and charity for the poor is demanded from us. What possibly
could we do in order to do Jesus’ challenge?
This Sunday’s First Reading has a very profound insight on how we can do Jesus’ challenge. According to the
Prophet Amos, we must treat the poor well. Never defraud them, take advantage of them or treat them unjustly.

Church of the Poor. Latin American Bishops, Medellin Documents, Poverty of the Church, 1968:10: “We ought
to sharpen the awareness of our duty of solidarity with the poor, to which charity leads us. This solidarity means that we
make ours their problems and their struggles, that we know how to speak with them. This has to be concretized in
criticism of injustice and oppression, in the struggle against the intolerable situation which a poor person often has to
tolerate, in the willingness to dialogue with the groups responsible for that situation in order to make them understand
their obligations.”

131 years of St. Mary’s Parish. We are 131 years of blessings and grace. The Lord is merciful and kind. He
blessed us with the good and allowed us to experience some bad. The good made us strong. The not so good made us
stronger.
Let us stick together even when some are having a hard time dealing with the needed changes. Remember, we
are a growing Church. There can never be growth without passing through difficult situations. Just as Jesus worked for
unity, there was painful unity and that could never be avoided. In the process of renewal, many will choose to leave,
there will be greater division in the parish and there will be persecution. But in the end; community life is always
sweeter, more purified, unified and vibrant parish.

It is Catechetical Sunday. Parishes in US dioceses start today catechesis to their children and youth. We will be
behind this time as we will begin our catechetical formation next weekend. But we will catch up.
Next weekend, we will commission our catechists and bless our children and youth who will journey in faith
and learning during this year’s faith formation.
Let us also offer our support and prayers for them. And let us not forget to pray for all the children, youth and
catechists in US dioceses for a spirit-filled year of formation.
En el aprovechamiento de la riqueza por el bien de los pobres. Jesús ama incondicionalmente a los pobres. Pero eso no quiere decir que no ame a los ricos. El quiere corregir el amor mundano de los ricos por la
riqueza que perjudica tanto a los pobres. Y él quiere invertir a los pobres a su derecho a la riqueza de la tierra
mediante la enseñanza a los ricos por preocuparse por el bienestar de los pobres.

Jesús dio el ejemplo de amor hacia los pobres dándoles de comer y cuidar de sus necesidades. Él
protegió a la viuda, al huérfano y a los esclavos. En una narración en el Evangelio, Jesús se compadeció de la
viuda cuyo hijo murió. En la cultura judía, una viuda no tiene ningún derecho ni esperanza al no tener un
patrón masculino que la apoye. El patrón masculino puede ser el hermano de la viuda o el hijo mayor de la viuda. En este caso, el hijo mayor era su única esperanza. Pero también él se había ido. Movido por la compasión
y la situación de la viuda, es por la cual Jesus resucitó al hijo de la viuda de entre los muertos.
Hay varios otros milagros que Jesús hizo para aliviar a los pobres de su situación. Al ciego Bartimeo se
le dio la vista; la mujer con hemorragia fue sanada; el hombre paralítico que fue bajado de la azotea se levanto
y camino; etcétera.
Ahora se nos exige ese mismo amor y caridad para los pobres. Lo que posiblemente podríamos hacer
con el fin de hacer el mismo desafío de Jesús?
La primera lectura de este domingo tiene una penetración muy profunda sobre cómo podemos hacer el desafío
de Jesús. De acuerdo con el profeta Amos, debemos tratar bien a los pobres. Nunca defraudarlos, ni
aprovecharse de ellos o tratarlos injustamente.

La Iglesia de los pobres. El documento Episcopado Latinoamericano, de Medellín, la pobreza de la
Iglesia, en 1968: 10: "Es necesario agudizar la conciencia de nuestro deber en la solidaridad con los pobres, a
lo que la caridad nos lleva. Esta solidaridad significa de hacer nuestra sus problemas y sus luchas, y saber
cómo hablar con ellos. Esto tiene que concretarse en la denuncia de la injusticia y la opresión, en la lucha contra la situación intolerable que una persona pobre a menudo tiene que tolerar, en la disposición a dialogar con
los grupos responsables de esa situación con el fin de hacerles comprender sus obligaciones ".

131 años de Nuestra Parroquia de Santa María. Cumplimos 131 años de bendiciones y gracia. El Señor
es compasivo y bondadoso. Él nos a bendecido con lo bueno y también nos permitió experimentar algunas malas situaciones. Lo bueno nos hizo fuerte. Lo no tan buena nos hizo aun más fuertes.
Sigamos juntos incluso cuando algunos están teniendo dificultades para hacer frente a los cambios que
se requieren. Recuerde, somos una iglesia en crecimiento. Nunca puede haber crecimiento sin tener que pasar
por situaciones difíciles. Así como Jesús trabajó por la unidad, pero también había unidad dolorosa y eso no se
podía evitar. En el proceso de renovación, muchos elegirán en salirse, habrá una mayor división en la parroquia y habrá persecución. Pero al final; la vida comunitaria es siempre más dulce: más purificada y unificada y
una parroquia vibrante.

Deacon Victor Mena
My name is Victor Mena, I was ordained deacon on the 26th of May in Klamath Falls, Diocese of Baker. Before entering
Seminary I studied Applied Math to Statistics and Economics in Mexico City, after I worked at Stock market for one year. After that I
had the opportunity to be a professor in my University, teaching Infinitesimal Calculus and Numeric Calculus. During that time I took
pedagogical classes in order to develop skills to be a better teacher. In this class, one of my classmates was a nun and I was really
surprise for that. In my second year, she asked me to be a teacher in her Catholic High School. So this was the beginning of my calling.
After receiving my Masters in Education and Human development I accepted the job at the Catholic High School and we developed the
holistic formation program for the youth. God called me through my students to pursuit priesthood. In my discernment, I found the
Congregation of Missionaries of Africa. I studied with them my philosophical
studies. As well I had the opportunity live in Africa for a while. After then, I discerned to become a priest in a diocese. I arrived four years ago to study English
and Theology at Mount Angel Seminary for the Diocese of Baker. Please keep me
in your prayers as I serve and learn from this community.

Mi nombre es Víctor Mena. Fui ordenado como diácono transitorio el día 26 de
Mayo en Klamath Falls, perteneciente a la Diócesis de Baker. Antes de entrar al
seminario yo estudié una carrera llamada Acturía, la cual significa Matemáticas
Aplicadas a la Economía y Estadística. Estos estudios los cursé en la Ciudad de
México. Trabajé por un año como asesor financiero en la Casa de Bolsa. Después
tuve la grandiosa oportunidad de enseñar Cálculo Numérico y Cálculo Infinitesimal en la Universidad donde yo estudié. Para poder enseñar mejor, me mandaron a tomar cursos de Pedagogía y en esos cursos encontré a una de mis ex
compañeras, la cual ya era religiosa. Durante el segundo año ella me invitó a dar clases en la Preparatoria que su Congregación tenía,
así que después empecé a dar clases en una Preparatoria Católica. Es allí donde Dios me llama al sacerdocio a través de mis estudiantes. En mi proceso de discernimiento encontré la Congregación de los Misioneros de África con los cuales estudié la primera etapa de
formación del sacerdocio, la cual llamamos Filosofía. Tuve la fortuna de vivir un tiempo en el hermoso continente de África por un
tiempo, donde aprendí muchas cosas las cuales me dejaron claro que mi vocación al sacerdocio era en la vida diocesana. Yo llegué a este
país hace cuatro años y medio para estudiar Inglés y la Teología en el seminario de Monte Ángel para la Diócesis de Baker. Por favor,
me encomiendo en sus oraciones mientras que aprendo y sirvo en esta comunidad. Dios los bendiga.

The patron of Eucharistic Adorers, St. Padre Pio was passionately in love with the Holy Eucharist. He
wrote: “Let me recognize You as your disciples did at the breaking of the bread, so that the Eucharistic
Communion (may) be the light which disperses the darkness, the force which sustains me, the unique joy of
my heart.” “In the most holy sacrament of the Eucharist, in this Sacrament of love, we have true life, a
blessed life, and true happiness.” “Let us spend our whole lives giving thanks to the divine Father who in
an excess of love for us, sent His only begotten Son and our most sweet Lover. Protected, covered and defended by the Presence of this dear Lord, let us stand before Him (in the Holy Eucharist) and pray with the
humility of the creature and the confidence and freedom of the child.” (From our D-9 Padre Pio Prayer card,

resources for recruiting, educating and the formation of our seminarians. We often benefit
when we host seminarians for part of their training at our parish. Our most recent was
Dustin Busse, but there is Ace, and has been Fr. Tetzel, Fr. Dominic, Fr. Jorge, Fr. Peter
and more. If you are able to contribute, it will be greatly appreciated.

OUR RESPONSIBILITY FOR OTHERS
SOMOS RESPONSABLES POR LOS DEMÁS
The Second Vatican Council has called us to envision
the Church as the people of God. As a community of
believers we are responsible for our brothers and sisters,
their salvation, their journey of faith, their physical wellbeing. Many of the documents of Vatican II and volumes
of work since the mid-1960s give us advice, guidelines,
and encouragement to take care of one another: the
poor, the elderly, the unborn, the broken, the infirm.
El Concilio Vaticano II nos ha llamado a imaginar la
Iglesia como el pueblo de Dios. Como una comunidad de
creyentes somos responsables por nuestros hermanos,
por su salvación, su peregrinar en la fe, su bienestar
físico. Muchos de los documentos del Concilio y volúmenes de trabajos desde mediados de la década del 60 nos
dan consejos, guías y ánimo para ayudarnos unos a otros:

Because Vatican II is part of our recent history—

as a new and revolutionary idea. But today’s readings
show us the agelessness of the issue of social justice.
Eight hundred years before Christ was born, Amos
warned the wealthy not to cheat the poor. In Paul’s first
letter to Timothy, he encourages all prayers to be for all
people; and finally, the Gospel urges the wise use of
money.

Porque el Concilio Vaticano II es parte de nuestra
reciente historia –sin duda muchos de nosotros ya habíamos nacido– esto nos puede parecer una idea nueva y
revolucionaria. Pero las lecturas de hoy nos muestran que
las enseñanzas sobre justicia social han existido siempre.
Ochocientos años antes de nacer Cristo, Amós advirtió a
los ricos que no engañaran a los pobres. En la primera
carta de Pablo a Timoteo, él insiste en que todas las
