Dear Brothers and
Sisters:
This Sunday is Good Shepherd Sunday and Vocation Sunday. The word of
God presents us with two images, the Children of
God and the Good Shepherd. In today’s gospel
passage Jesus emphasizes the sacrifice of his
own life indicating that he is the good shepherd
who lays down his life for his sheep. The image
of the Good Shepherd was perhaps the favorite
early Christian image of our Savior and has a
long tradition in the history of God’s people. It is
one that would be immediately understood by
the people of the time. We have the popular pictures of Jesus, the Good Shepherd carrying a
sheep over his shoulders or we have a smiling
Jesus sitting under a tree with a little lamb on his
lap. This image of the shepherd appeals to us because it shows the tenderness of Jesus and his
compassion. A shepherd in general did not walk
behind the flock beating them with a stick to
keep them moving. He walked in front of them,
seeking out a safe path for food, water and shelter. The sheep gently followed him because they
recognized his voice, and they trusted him. Jesus
tells us that this is the kind of Good Shepherd he
is. He leads, and we follow. As one Church community, let us follow Jesus, our Good Shepherd.
Also, let us pray for vocations to the religious
life.

Queridos hermanos y
hermanas:
Este domingo se celebra el
domingo del "Buen Pastor" y el día mundial de
oración para vocaciones. La palabra de Dios nos
presenta dos imágenes, los hijos de Dios y el
Buen Pastor. En el pasaje evangélico de hoy, Jesús hace énfasis en el sacrificio de su propio ser y
su propia vida, indicando que él es el Buen Pastor que da su vida por las ovejas. La imagen del
Buen Pastor ha sido quizás la imagen favorita de
los cristianos que muestra a nuestro Salvador y
tiene una larga tradición en la historia del pueblo
de Dios. Es una imagen que sería comprendida
inmediatamente por la gente de esa época. Tenemos las imágenes populares de Jesús, el Buen
Pastor llevando una oveja sobre sus hombros, o
tenemos un Jesús sonriente sentados bajo un árbol con un cordero en su regazo. Esta imagen del
pastor llama nuestra atención porque muestra la
ternura de Jesús y su compasión. Un pastor en
general no camina detrás del rebaño golpeándolo
con un palo para mantenerlos moviéndose. Él camina delante de ellos, buscando un camino seguro para alimento, agua y vivienda, y las ovejas le
siguen amablemente, porque reconocen su voz, y
confían en él. Jesús nos dice que esta es la imagen
del Buen Pastor que es él. El nos dirige, y nosotros le seguimos. Como una comunidad de la
Iglesia, sigamos a Jesús, nuestro buen Pastor, y
también recemos por las vocaciones a la vida
religiosa.

Circle of Faith
Thank you to all who par cipated in the Circle of Faith this
past Sunday. A special thanks to
Anthony Mindiola for the organiza on of the event, to Father Anil who led the prayer
and for all his support and dedica on to Holy Name, and to the
Knights of Columbus for the prepara on of the food.
It was amazing to see the community of Holy Name
coming together to be one family in prayer!
