Jesus tells the crowd that only those who renounce all of their possessions can be His disciples. Is He truly asking us to give up everything? Perhaps He is trying to help us see that everything we think we own is a gift from God. Good stewards know that and strive to use those gifts accountably. September 4, 2016 TwentyTwenty-Third Sunday of Ordinary Time /Vigésimo Tercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario The Holy Spirit guides us, as Christian stewards, away from the burdens of earth and on the straight path to gain our eternal salvation. The psalmist says, “0 prosper the work of our hands.” Christian stewards rejoice in the glad understanding that our prosperity comes from God’s kindness. In his letter, St. Paul teaches us about the oneness of mankind in Christ, regardless of status. Do we, as Christian stewards, welcome everyone as our brother and sister in the Lord? In today’s Gospel, Jesus asks us to give up our possessions to be His disciples, a counter-cultural statement in today’s society. On our continuing journey to make Christian stewardship our way of life, do we let go of possessions that have mastered us, or are we still mastered by them? Biblical passages ask God to “prosper the work of our hands” (Psalm 90). Pope John Paul II frequently talked about the sacred nature of human labor. Labor Day is the result of a long struggle for recognition of the social and economic achievements of American workers—their contribution to the strength and prosperity of our country. The first Labor Day celebration was in 1882 in New York City as more than 10,000 workers marched through the streets. In the late 1800s, the Knights of Labor worked to spread awareness of Labor Day; the influence of religion was undeniable. Wrote Knights of Labor Leader Terence Vincent Powderly (a devout Catholic), “Trade-unionists, members of guilds, leagues and other organizations of workingmen embraced Christianity and proclaimed its doctrines as being especially advantageous to the welfare of the poor. If Labor Day is observed as it ought to be, the gospel of humanity will be understood by all men and women.” The Sunday preceding Labor Day is known as “Labor Sunday” - for the spiritual and educational facets of the labor movement.
