Kindergarten
CLASSROOM NEWS
On January 29th, our students will be
celebrating the 100th day of kindergarten! We
will be celebrating all of our accomplishments
by participating in many 100th day activities in class. We
have been learning about being healthy and making healthy
food choices at home and at school. In math, we are
working hard toward our end of the year goal of counting,
recognizing, and writing numbers to 100. We have also
been learning how to use our fingers, drawings, objects,
and words to make and solve addition problems. We are
getting ready to dive into subtraction too!
In language arts our students have learned 50 sight words!
We will also continue working on recognizing and writing
the ending sound of words. In Spanish, we have started our
work with blending syllables and in English, students have
been working hard on consonant digraphs.
We are excited to begin our next theme, Weather. At home,
you can talk to your child about the weather and make
predictions about whether the day will be cloudy, sunny, or
rainy. In February, we will also be celebrating Valentine’s
Day! Kinder teachers thank all parents helping their
students to complete their homework and reading at home.
When reading at home, encourage your student to find
sight words in their books. Thank you for all of your
efforts. With your help, everything is possible.
Can you believe we are already at the end of January? Have you noticed how much your children have grown academically? In the last few weeks, we have worked on understanding place value and writing numerals 1 – 120. In Language Arts we have emphasized recognizing and reading sound letters combinations such a diphthongs or English short and long vowels. In the coming weeks, we will shift from our focus on numeral writing to using place value to compare quantities. In Language Arts, we will continue to work on Hluency but also put increasing emphasis on complete paragraph writing with introduction, body, and closure to prepare them for the district writing assessment in March.
In science, we will begin our Biome theme. The students will learn about how plants and animals adapt to the conditions in different biomes. You may choose to take your child to the library to get books about animals, visit a petting zoo, such as Happy Hollow, or point out the various plants and animals around where you live.
Good news! Your child also can receive a Super Blue for earning 2.5 points per week with 85% (or higher) of answers correct on Accelerated Reader (AR) quizzes for the coming four week. To help them earn their points, please bring them before or after school or on Saturday to the library and computer lab to read and take their tests.
In addition to the certiHicates of achievement normally awarded at our monthly assembly, students who have already completed the nine levels of Lexia for Hirst grade will be recognized.
Second Grade
Wishing you had a great vacation with family
and friends we welcome a new year, and
share with you the topics your children have
learned during the month of January.
In language arts the children were able to form
contractions by joining two words and using the
apostrophe correctly when writing. Also, students
learned and used the key features of a text such as the
glossary, index, table of contents, words in bold, titles,
etc. in order to locate key information efficiently .
Finally, our students were able to orally retell a story
or experience with relevant facts and details using
coherent sentences.
In math the children have demonstrated their
knowledge of measurement by measuring the length
of objects by selecting the appropriate instrument such
as a ruler, tape measure, yard stick, centimeters, and
meter. They also had the opportunity to estimate
lengths using inches, feet, centimeters and meters. In
addition students also added 10 and 100 mentally and
solved problems using 2-digit numbers .
In science our young economists enjoyed each of the
activities and strategies related to goods and services.
They learned about trade in North America and the
products that our country exports and imports. They
also learned the process involved in making jeans,
from since cotton to pants. In table teams, the students
have worked on various social skills such as
perseverance, determination, teamwork and
collaboration.
In the coming month we will be working on
describing the structure of a text, which includes the
introduction and conclusion, identifying the author's
point of view and recognizing evidence the author
uses to support his point of view. In writing we will
write narratives and opinions. In math the children
will continue to work mental sums of 2 digit numbers
and mental subtraction. In science our children will
continue to learn about the economy.
We continue to infinitely appreciate your continued
support .
2nd Grade Teachers
We are continuing to study animal adaptations
and biomes through January. In February we
will be starting our unit on government. Please
encourage your child to watch the news and
learn how our government works.
In English Language Arts we're working on the theme
of "Incredible Stories,” which is great fun for the
students. Of course, we continue to delve into the text
to better our comprehension skills.
In Mathematics we’re studying multiplication. There
will be a multiplication challenge coming where
students can win a party with the Principal for knowing
their multiplication facts (0-10) by memory. This party
will be in April, so study hard to pass the test of 48 or
more correct in 3 minutes. Please ask your child daily
three facts that he/she has learned at school, continue to
practice addition, subtraction, multiplication and
division facts and be sure to read, read, read!!
The 5th grade students had a
wonderful time at YMCA Camp
Campbell outdoor school! They
were away from home for four days and they
learned more responsibility as they took care of
themselves and their belongings. While hiking,
searching for creatures in the river, and spending
time in the nature lab, the students were able to
learn through many of the hands-on lessons and
activities planned by a highly qualified staff from
camp. They were able to make new friends as they
shared a cabin and went on field studies with
students from Lowell Elementary and Empire
Gardens Elementary. Students also participated in
sing-a-longs, group games, skits, and other great
activities that created an unforgettable experience
for all of them.
We would like to thank the entire Gardner
community for helping us make this opportunity
possible for our 5th graders. The positive effects
that this experience has had on our students are
numerous and we look forward to seeing how these
effects influence our classrooms.
Dear 4th grade families,
4th grade has had a very exciting beginning of
2014. Our 4th graders did a wonderful job
presenting at the January SELAC meeting. Thanks to
all the parents who brought their students that evening.
In Math our students have been working hard on
learning mental and long division. We appreciate the
work you continue to do with your child reviewing
basic math facts and multiplication tables. It is
extremely important that all our students have a strong
understanding of their basic math facts in order for
them to get the more complex concepts such as division
and fractions.
In Language Arts the students in Language! are
learning about Jazz. The rest of the students have been
studying differences and similarities between poetry,
drama and prose. Our students have definitely shown
their creative side by writing great poems. In the next
couple of weeks students will be introduced to opinion
writing. One way you can help is by asking your child
what his/her opinion about everyday topics such us
favorite school subject, favorite food, etc.

Hablemos PTO Updates
Thank you to all Gardner families for your
support. With your help, here's what we've
been able to do for our children:
• $10,000+ for 5th grade science camp
• $120 for Mariachi to replace broken guitar
bags, straps and picks
• $300 for new area rugs in K/1 classes
(ordered)
• $1500 for 4th grade field trip
• $240 for the library
• $200 for a new microphone for the cafeteria
• Come by Room 1 on Friday mornings for
coffee, friends and fun.
IF YOU HAVE A 4th GRADER:
• We need 2-3 parents to lead chocolate
sales.
• Without volunteers, we will be unable to sell
chocolates this year.
• Without chocolate sales, we may not be
able to support Science Camp next year.
• Half of all the money we raise is for Science
Camp.
• Come by Room 1 on Friday morning for
more information.

Vacaciones de Invierno - No hay Clases

Las clases comienzan nuevamente
Kinder
¡El 29 de enero, nuestros estudiantes cumplen 100 días
de kínder! Vamos a celebrar todo lo que han logrado nuestros
estudiantes haciendo actividades de cien. El mes de enero
hemos estado aprendiendo sobre la salud y como hacer
decisiones saludables cuando comemos en la escuela o en la
casa. Nuestras mentes y nuestros cuerpos están mas fuertes cada
día. En Matemáticas seguimos trabajando duro para lograr
nuestra meta de contar, reconocer, y escribir números hasta 100.
También hemos estado aprendiendo como usar nuestros dedos,
dibujos, objetos y palabras para hacer y representar sumas. Nos
estamos preparando para las restas escuchando cuentos sobre
más y menos.
¡En las artes de lenguaje, nuestros estudiantes ya han aprendido
50 palabras frecuentes! También Seguiremos trabajando en
escribir y escuchar el ultimo sonido en las palabras y hemos
comenzado las sílabas en español. En ingles los niños están
aprendiendo dígrafos con consonantes. El mes de febrero
comenzaremos un nuevo tema sobre el clima. En casa pueden
hablar sobre el clima y hacer predicciones sobre el clima del día.
Es divertido adivinar si el día será soleado, caluroso, o frío. En
febrero también celebraremos el día de el amor y la amistad.
Como siempre, el equipo de maestras de kínder quiere agradecer
a todos los padres que ayudan a nuestros estudiantes a completar
su tarea y lectura en casa. Cuando lean en casa, anime a su niño/
a para que encuentre las palabras frecuentes que ya sabe en su
libro, esto le ayudara a tener mas confianza en sus habilidades.
Agradecemos mucho la dedicación de todos nuestras familias,
con ustedes, todo es posible.
¿
Primer Grado
Pueden creer que ya estamos a finales de enero? ¿Han
notado cuánto se han desarrollado académicamente sus
hijos? En las semanas previas, hemos trabajado en comprender el
valor posicional y escribir los números hasta el ciento veinte. En
lectura hemos hecho hincapié en reconocer y leer combinaciones
de sonidos como diptongos o vocales cortas y largas en inglés.
En las próximas semana continuaremos trabajando con el valor
posicional y comparar dos cantidades.
En lectoescritura, además de practicar fluidez, incrementaremos la
escritura de un párrafo completo con introducción, cuerpo y
conclusión para prepararlos con el exámen de escritura del distrito.
En ciencias comenzaremos con el tema de los biomas. Los
estudiantes aprenderán sobre cómo se adaptan plantas y animales a
los diferentes biomas. Usted puede considerar llevar a su hijo a la
biblioteca para sacar libros de animales y plantas o llevarlo a un
zoológico como Happy Hollow o mostrarle las plantas y animales
alrededor suyo.
¡Buenas noticias! Su niño puede recibir otro super boleto azul
durante las próximas cuatro semanas si completa dos puntos y
medio por semana con un porcentaje de 85% o mayor de
preguntas correctas en los exámenes del Lector acelerado. Para
ayudar a su hijo, tráigalo al salón de computadoras antes y después
de clases o en los sábados. Además se reconocerá a todos los
estudiantes que ya completaron los nueve niveles de Lexia del
primer grado.
Grado 2
Deseando que hayan tenido unas vacaciones excelentes y
en familia les damos la bienvenida a un nuevo año y a
continuación compartimos con ustedes los temas que sus
niños han aprendido durante el mes de enero.
En lenguaje los niños lograron formar contracciones
uniendo dos palabras y usando el apóstrofe correctamente
al escribir. También conocieron y usaron los elementos de
un texto como: glosarios, índice, tabla de contenido,
palabras en negrilla, títulos, etc. para localizar información
clave y eficientemente. Finalmente nuestros alumnos
pudieron recontar oralmente una historia o experiencia con
hechos y detalles relevantes usando oraciones coherentes.
En matemáticas los niños han demostrados sus
conocimientos al medir la longitud de objetos
seleccionando los instrumentos apropiados como: la regla,
la cinta métrica, la yarda, el centímetro y el metro. Además
tuvieron la oportunidad de estimar longitudes usando
pulgadas, pies, centímetros y metros. De la misma manera
sumaron 10 y 100 mentalmente y resolvieron problemas
usando números de 2 dígitos.
En ciencias nuestros jóvenes economistas disfrutaron cada
una de las actividades y estrategias relacionadas a los
bienes y servicios. Aprendieron del comercio de América
del Norte y los productos que nuestro país exporta e
importa. Además aprendieron del proceso que toma
confeccionar los pantalones de mezclilla desde que es
algodón hasta los pantalones. En equipos, han trabajado
diversas estrategias usando las habilidades sociales tales
como: perseverancia, determinación, trabajo en equipo y
colaboración.
Próximamente estaremos trabajando en lenguaje describir
la estructura de un texto incluyendo introducción y
conclusión, identificar el punto de vista del autor, reconocer
evidencias que usa el autor para apoyar su punto de vista.
Escribir textos narrativos y opiniones. En matemáticas los
niños continuarán trabajando sumas mentales de 2 dígitos y
restas mentales. En ciencias nuestros niños continuarán
aprendiendo sobre la economía.

Maestros de 2do. Grado
Grado 3
Seguimos estudiando adaptaciones de animales y sus
biomas a través de enero. En febrero empezaremos el
tema de estudio sobre el gobierno. Por favor anime a su
alumno/a a mirar las noticias para aprender como funciona
nuestro gobierno.
En Artes de Lenguaje en Inglés estamos trabajando en el
tema de “Historia increíbles,” lo cual es una gran gozada
para los niños. Claro que seguimos trabajando en las varias
estrategias de comprensión mientras leemos.
En matemáticas estamos estudiando la multiplicación.
Habrá un reto del director donde los alumnos pueden ganar
una fiesta con el director por saber sus tablas de
multiplicación (0-10) de memoria. La fiesta será en abril,
así que estudie mucho para lograr 48 o más problemas
correctas en 3 minutos. ¡Por favor preguntele a su hijo/a
diariamente tres datos que ha aprendido en la escuela, siga
practicando las sumas, restas, y tablas de multiplicación y
división, y asegúrese que su hijo/a lea, lea, lea!

Grado 4
Cuarto grado ha tenido un gran comienzo en el 2014.
Nuestros estudiantes hicieron un trabajo maravilloso en su
presentación a los padres de SELAC en enero. Agradecemos a
todos los padres que trajeron a sus hijos esa tarde.
En Matemáticas nuestros estudiantes han estado aprendiendo
división mental y la forma extendida de división. Apreciamos
el tiempo que pasan con sus hijos/as repasando las destrezas
básicas de matemáticas como multiplicación. Es muy
importante que todos los estudiantes dominen estas destrezas
para poder entender los conceptos mas avanzados como
división y fracciones.
En la clase de Inglés el tema de la clase de Language! es Jazz.
El resto de los estudiantes están aprendiendo las diferencias y
similitudes entre poesía, drama y prosa. Los estudiantes
realmente mostraron su creatividad escribiendo unos poemas
muy buenos. En las próximas semanas comenzaremos a
practicar como escribir un ensayo de opinión. Pueden
practicar en casa preguntándoles a sus hijos/as acerca de
temas comunes como cual es su materia favorita y porque?
Cual es su comida favorita etc.
Esperamos que disfruten el descanso de invierno en Febrero.

Grado 5
Los estudiantes de tuvieron un tiempo
maravilloso en YMCA Camp Campbell.
Estuvieron lejos de su hogar por cuatro días y
aprendieron ser más responsables al tener que
cuidarse ellos mismos y cuidar sus pertenencias.
Durante las caminatas, buscando criaturas en el río y
pasando el tiempo en el laboratorio de la naturaleza, a
los estudiantes se les brindo la oportunidad de aprender
a través de las lecciones y actividades organizadas por
los empleados del campamento. Los estudiantes
hicieron nuevas amistades al compartir la cabaña y
durante los estudios de campo con los estudiantes de la
escuela Lowell y Empire Gardens. También todos
participaron en cantar a coro, juegos con grupos, obras
de teatro y otras gran actividades que crearon una
experiencia inolvidable.
Nos gustaría dar las gracias a toda la comunidad de
Gardner por su ayuda para hacer posible esta
oportunidad para los estudiantes de quinto grado. Los
efectos positivos que ha tenido esta experiencia en
nuestros estudiantes son numerosas y esperamos ver
como estos efectos influyen en nuestro salones.
