Garfield GAIN Fiesta - Garfield Neighborhood
Garfield FALL 2013 News Working Together For a Safe, Clean and Friendly Neighborhood. Trabajando Juntos por Un Vecindario Seguro, Limpio y amable. “¡Si Se Puede!” Garfield GAIN Fiesta WEE CARE Annie Lloyd, conribuor Remember those warm, wonderful feelings of hanging out and playing at your grandmother’s house? The feeling of love transcended the entire house, giving you the feeling of wonder, excitement and freedom to express yourself at play -- without computers. Such is the feeling at Wee Care Child Development Center located at 1149 E Fillmore Street, where grandmothers give children that feeling you don’t get with computers. That’s what parent Domingo Galindo likes about Wee Care. “Wee Care is an ‘old school’ daycare, no computer and nothing high tech, unlike most daycares today. The employees are all grandmothers, who love to express the ‘grandma love’ to the children.” Wee Care’s emphasis is on the well being of children in a warm and familial environment. Tucked away in a neighborhood of historic homes in the Garfield District, Wee Care is more like a day at your grandmother’s house than today’s typical day care center. In operation since 1973, many of Wee Care’s former students now bring their children to Wee Care because of its comfort and nurturing environment. Like most parents, Domingo works hard for his money and he believes Wee Care is the best value for his money. “Wee Care is a ‘Diamond in the rough,’” says Domingo. “It provides the community with affordable daycare.” As a father and a member of the Phoenix community, Domingo believes in order to provide affordable daycare, “we need the assistance of parents and the community getting involved with keeping the facility running.” Wee Care is open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Programs offered include Before and After School, Summer Program, and Child Care Food Program. Meals include a hot breakfast served between 7:30 and 9:00 a.m., hot lunch, and afternoon snack. To learn more about Wee Care check out their newly developed website athttp://weecarechild. org/ or simply call (602) 258-2359. They’ve made presentations to our Redevelopment and Economic Development Committee (you’re always welcome), and we reviewed their origins and intentions. It’s a social site much like facebook, myspace or google+ however the difference is, all neighbors/ users/participants are vetted Garfield residents. Singing up requires verification of residency within Garfield (you see only cross-streets). No outsiders permitted. No developer or person living in Tempe can chime in on our conversation. We can however, view what issues are in neighboring hoods that have joined nextdoor. com; such as Willow & Coronado. Besides a great way to post lost puppy or found puppy, Nestdoor.com is greater at focusing on solutions to stolen bikes or cases of serial vandalism or graffiti, or street lights out, because you know you’re only talking to neighbors. Recently the independent Garfield Historic District Phoenix Facebook group had quite a discussion over a group of problematic juveniles; and snarky exchanges. We believe nextdoor.com will be a better platform for Garfield residents to have helpful discussions. Yes there will be differences of opinion, but assuming we can all be civil, we’ll focus on the common denominators that bind us together as a community of different cultures and characters. Nextdoor.com Keyboard classes for beginners have begun for this session. Verde Park has keyboards at the park site, and classes are conducted in the class room. Wednesday, 5:30 for 9-12 year olds, and Thursday, 5:30 for 6-8 year olds. The classes will be for 6 week sessions, one day a week. Classes will begin again this Spring. Jerome Miller began his career with the city in 1994, in the Neighborhood Services Department. Among his many responsibilities in the newly formed department was to serve as lead staff over comprehensive revitalization in the City’s new Neighborhood Initiative Areas. A subsequent study by ASU found that this strategy led to a significant reduction of blight and dramatic improvement in quality of life in those areas. Jerome was appointed Deputy City Manager in July 2010, after serving as Interim Deputy City Manager since 2009. He oversaw the Equal Opportunity, Housing, Human Services, Neighborhood Services, Parks and Recreation, and Water Services departments, the Public Information Office, Water Strategies and Development, and the West Phoenix Revitalization Advisory Board. In addition to devoting evenings and weekends to untold numbers of neighborhood meetings and events, Jerome’s commitments in the community included service on the boards of Neighborhood Housing Services of Phoenix and the Central Arizona Chapter of the National Forum for Black Public Administrators. He also served as the Chairman of the Phoenix Community Development and Investment Corporation, which promotes economic development and job creation in low- and moderate- income communities. Additionally he taught classes on comprehensive neighborhood revitalization and participated as guest lecturer on public sector leadership for ASU. Jerome’s impact transcends the limits of a single lifetime, organization or neighborhood. Countless public servants throughout the country and thousands of residents throughout Phoenix attribute transformation in their careers, communities and lives to his leadership. He will be remembered as a warm and engaging colleague, a loving and devoted friend, a passionate and vocal advocate for neighborhoods, and an inspirational force behind lasting change in our organization and our city. Jerome made a significant impact in many of Phoenix’s neighborhoods including here in Garfield, his commitment to people will be missed. We seek to enter into collaborative relationships with the community we serve. We seek to provide socially conscious care that integrates the best practices of holistic traditions and modern bio-medicine: from acupuncture to dietary education, wellness checks to prescriptions, public advocacy to community gardens… our neighbors deserve nothing less. This is, of course, an enormous undertaking. We’ll need neighborhood input, donations, and volunteers of all types. We can’t do this without you. We planned for 4-600, and final tally by our officers was 8-900 turnout. This is the beginning of many wonderful relationships. There’s no way for me to single out for outstanding praise, any one partner, as it was a real team effort. But I’m sure everyone appreciated the on-site leadership of our co-chair, Jacob Akins (eg. inspired spontaneous decision to move Health services to immediate access of gym); Verde Park’s joy-filled Cindi ‘we’ll get it done’ Wilson; Incredible crowd motivators Campesina’s MC, and Rachel Sherman’s organization skills; all your contributions. Truly a wonderful authentic community-roots G.A.I.N. gift, was our CAO Mario Ancich, and officers grilling 1000 Hot Dogs, while motivating the kids to help out with food, water and sodas. Garfield’s founding la Doña Lupe Sisneros, would be ecstatic with our accomplishment leading to expanded testing, and providing direct contact for services, at next year’s GAIN FIESTA Health Fair.
