Flynn Invites You to “From Conflict to Communion” “From Conflict to Communion” is a study document created by a joint commission of Lutherans and Roman Catholics in preparation for the commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. You are invited to three evenings of discussion/prayer/fellowship with our Lutheran brothers and sisters. We will discuss the events that lead to division in the church 500 years ago. The differences that still exist will be addressed but mostly the talks will center on the common things we celebrate: our unity in Christ, similarities in our theology, liturgy, and practice of our faith in active love. The series begins here at St. Mark’s on Tuesday, October 11th, at 7 PM with Pastor Mary Farnham as guest speaker. On Tuesday, October 18th, Fr. Bill Lago will speak at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Manasquan, and on Tuesday, October 25th, our pastor will speak at St. Denis, Manasquan. Let’s come learn about and grow in respect for each other’s faith. Cover Photo: Our CYO had a great turnout at the Belmar Marina last Sunday for miniature golf and a picnic dinner. All high school students are invited to join our CYO! See page 11 for details. Photos by Mrs. Reilly, CYO Director. 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time Habakkuk 1:2-3; 2:2-4 Behold, he whose soul is not upright in him shall fail, but the righteous shall live by his faith. Psalms 95:1-2, 6-9 Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! 2 Timothy 1:6-8, 13-14 Do not be ashamed then of testifying to our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel in the power of God. Luke 17:5-10 And the Lord said, “If you had faith as a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be rooted up, and be planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.” UNITED 40 DAYS FOR LIFE CAMPAIGN & TOUR: Now through November 6th, help save lives by joining with record numbers of people across all 50 states and 23 na ons for the largest pro-life mobiliza on in history. October Prayer Petitions by Marge Loenser It’s October and I see leaves and acorns starting to fall already! When I look up at the tall trees with tremendous masses of green leaves, I sigh because I know that in November they will be piles of dried up leaves crackling underfoot. So much for staying in the present moment. October finds us celebrating so many wonderful saints through whose intercession we can pray for our families, the sick, special intentions and for peaceful solutions to our racial problems across this country. For example, St. John Brebeuf and St. Isaac Jogues were French priests that gave their lives to bring Jesus to the Indians in North America. They suffered torture and eventually death to unify races under Christ. On the first we have St Therese, the Little Flower, who taught us how to pray in her “little way.” The little way brought countless souls closer to God. There’s St. Francis of Assisi on the 4th, whose humility showed us that all of life was precious. On the 18th, we have St. Luke, who gave us the infancy narrative and who, (and I love this) honored the women that followed Jesus, women that gave up home and security to provide for Him and the apostles as they traveled. Let us remember that October is the month of the Holy Rosary of our Blessed Mother. We honor her by using the Rosary to pray for those in need, especially the unborn! Every now and then I get a “wake up” moment, and one happened last week. I was thinking: when Jesus becomes present on our altar after the consecration, and He looks out at us, what does He see? Think about it. I think He sees many with heads bowed in adoration, some folks distracted, and some looking up with imploring eyes. But how many people does Jesus see that are smiling at Him? Why not smile back at Jesus? Think about it! Pray for the United States, my sisters and brothers, and that God will provide us with a leader we will be proud of. May the saints pray for you and may Almighty God bless you abundantly! Joanne Gibson, Editor Diana Zuna, Associate Editor Bulletin announcements and columns are due on Mondays before 2 PM except before holidays. Bulletin drafts are submitted to Msgr. Flynn for review.
