Message From The Principal
Welcome Back
Welcome back and welcome to our new students. I am very
excited to be working with your children here at McKinley. My
first priority is to make sure the school is a safe and
welcoming place for your child to learn and grow. Please
encourage your child to talk to me or with any adult here at
school if they have any problems or concerns. Last year we
saw academic gains in all grade levels and subjects and I am
sure we will continue that progress this coming year. I would
love to have each and every one of you involved this year at
the school. Help out on the yard, volunteer for field trips,
become part of the Parent Club, Site Council or ELAC groups,
help in your child’s classroom or volunteer for one of our
fundraising events. Educating our children is a
COLLABORATIVE effort. We cannot do this with our your
support, involvement and help.
Coffee With The Principal:
This year we are starting a new tradition. Every other month
we will host a coffee with both our Assistant Principal, Ms.
Knopf and myself. Come and visit, ask questions and find out
what is going on at school. Our first “Coffee” will be this
Friday, out front of the school from 8:15 to 9:00.
Parent Club:
Get involved in the Parent Club this year! We need your help.
The parent club works together with the staff at MIT to raise
funds for field trips, supplies and classroom needs as well as
create a fun collaborative climate at the school. Come check
out our first Parent Club meeting on September 20th at 6:00.
Our first big fundraiser is our Lap-a-thon scheduled for
October 6th during the day.
Cell Phones and Electronic Devices
Just a reminder that cell phones and electronic devices (like I pods)
are to be out of sight and turned off during the entire school day. If
students are caught with cell phone or electronic devices on, the
items will be confiscated to be picked up by a parent. Repeat
offenses may result in their phones being confiscated for a week.
The reason for this rule is that texting, phones and electronic
devices create a disruption to the school environment. Please help
us in limiting these disruptions to the student’s educational day.
Student Drop Off and Pick Up
Please make sure that your child is at school on time. Classes
begin at 8:00 so that means they need to be in the classrooms and
ready to go. Please make sure your child is here before the bell
rings! Students also need to go directly home after school unless
they are participating in an after school program. Students who are
“hanging out” after school will be asked to leave and parents will be
contacted. Research shows that children tend to get into the most
trouble in the hours immediately after school (3:00 pm to 6:00 pm)
when they are unsupervised. Make sure you always know were
your children is and whom they are with.

8th Grade Shadowing Information
When choosing a high school, we recommend visiting for a day. High School invites
eighth grade students to spend a day at a High School “shadowing” a ninth grader in
order to learn about high school life. A visit can be very important in helping a student
determine which school will best be fit. Shadowing information is available each year
beginning in September. Shadowing is available by appointment on a first come, first
serve basis and fill up quickly. Some of the high schools will do this online only.
Please contact them directly.
Carlmont - check the website at carlmont.seq.org, click Parents/Community, select 8th
grade transition then select Shadowing at Carlmont.
Woodside - You need to go to woodsidehs.org and select Parents/Community select 8th grade shadowing – go to the bottom and fill out the Request a Shadow Date.
You may request a particular student to shadow or one will be assigned to you. Only
students who make arrangements ahead of time will be allowed to shadow.
8th grade Parent Information Night at Woodside High School is on Wednesday,
October 5, 2011 at 7 pm.
Menlo-Atherton - Go to mabears.org, select Parents/Community, click Shadowing
and then download the Shadow Request Form and email [email protected].
Sequoia – Sequoia will begin taking sign-ups ONLINE ONLY at a date to be
announced early September. Sequoia’s Shadowing Season for 2011-2012 includes
the following ten Mondays: 9/26-10/3-10/10-10/17-10/24-10/31-11/14-11/21-11/2812/5 Reservations will be taken online only. Please go to Sequoia’s website:
sequoiahs.org and under ‘Parents and Community’ you select ‘8th Grade Shadowing
Program’.
Nurse Corner:
Medication at School - Students should never have any medication at
school. If a student needs to take a medication during regular school
hours, we need a doctor’s authorization letter (we have forms available
in the office) . The doctor needs to specify the kind and amount of
medicine need it. We also need the original container of the prescription.
If you child has frequent headaches, you need to get a doctors note and
bring the prescribe pills to the school office with the note. We are NOT
authorized to give any medicine to the student without a doctor’s note. If
you child brings any medicine without a doctor’s note, parents will be
required to come to pick up the medication from the office.

Bienvenidos de Regreso a Clases
Bienvenidos de regreso y una gran bienvenida a nuestros nuevos
estudiantes. Estoy muy emocionado de trabajar con sus hijos
aquí en Mckinley. Mi primera prioridad es asegurar que la escuela
sea un lugar seguro y cómodo para que sus hijos aprendan y
crezcan. Por favor anímelos a hablar conmigo o con cualquier
adulto aquí en la escuela si ellos tienen problemas o
preocupaciones.
Quiero compartir con ustedes buenas noticias, el año pasado
vimos un crecimiento en el progreso académico en todos los
niveles de grado y áreas. Estoy seguro que continuaremos
progresando este año también. Me gustaría mucho que cada uno
de ustedes se involucrara este año en la escuela. Ayudando en el
patio, siendo voluntarios para excursiones escolares, siendo
parte del Club de Padres, del Concilio Escolar o de ELAC,
ayudando en el salón de clase de su hijo o siendo voluntario en
uno de nuestros eventos de recaudación de fondos. Educar a
nuestros niños es un esfuerzo de COLABOLACION. No podemos
hacerlo sin su apoyo, envolvimiento y ayuda.
Café con el Director:
Este año vamos a comenzar una nueva tradición. Cada dos
meses tendremos café para los padres y que puedan reunirse
con la Sub-directora, Sra. Knopf y conmigo. Venga y visítenos,
tendrá la oportunidad de hacernos preguntas y saber que esta
pasando en la escuela. Nuestro primer “Café con el Director”
será este viernes, al frente de la escuela de 8:15 a 9:00am.
Club de Padres:
Unase al Club de Padres este año! El Club de Padres trabajan
juntos con el personal de MIT para recaudar fondos para
excursiones escolares, útiles y necesidades de los salones así
como también crear un clima de colaboración divertido en la
escuela. Venga a nuestra primera reunión del Club de Padres el
20 de septiembre a las 6:00pm. Nuestro primer gran evento de
recaudación de fondos será nuestra Lap-a-thon que será el 6 de
octubre durante el día.
Celulares y Aparatos Electrónicos
Solo queremos recordarles que los celulares y aparatos
electrónicos (como Ipods) deben estar guardados y apagados
durante todo el día escolar. Si se encuentra a un estudiante
usando el celular o algún aparato electrónico se le confiscara y el
aparato debe ser recogido por el padre o la madre. Ofensas
repetidas podrían resultar en que los aparatos sean mantenidos
en la oficina por una semana. La razón de esta regla es que
enviar textos, usa teléfonos o aparatos electrónicos crean una
interrupción al ambiente escolar. Por favor ayúdenos en limitar
estas interrupciones durante el día educacional del estudiante.
Dejando y Recogiendo Estudiantes
Por favor asegúrense que su hijo(a) llegue a tiempo a la escuela.
Las clases comienzan a las 8:00am en punto así que esto
significa que deben estar en el salón a esa hora listos para
comenzar. Por favor asegúrese que su hijo este aquí antes que
suene el timbre! Los estudiantes también necesitan irse a casa
directamente después de la escuela a menos que ellos estén
participando en un programa después de la escuela. Los
estudiantes que se quedan alrededor de la escuela después de
clase se les pedirá que se vallan y se les hablara a los padres.
Las pruebas demuestran que los niños que usualmente se meten
en problemas es durante las horas después de la escuela. (de
3:00 pm a 6:00 pm) cuando no tienen supervisión. Asegúrese que
usted siempre sepa donde están sus hijos y con quien están.

Información sobre el Programa de “Shadowing” para 8o Grado
Cuando se escoge una preparatoria, nosotros recomendamos visitarlas por un día. Las
Preparatorias invitan a los estudiantes de 8º grado a pasar un día visitándolas siendo la
sombra (shadow) de un estudiante de noveno grado para aprender sobre la vida en la
preparatoria. Una visita puede ser muy importante para ayudar a un estudiante a
determinar cual escuela es mejor para el/ella. La información sobre el programa
“Shadowing” esta disponible cada año en septiembre. Las visitas están disponibles el
primero que venga el primero que se atienda y se llena rápido. Algunas de las
preparatorias harán esto en línea únicamente. Por favor llámeles directamente.
Carlmont – revise la pagina web en carlmont.seq.org, presione: Parents/Community,
seleccione “8th grade transición” después seleccione “Shadowing at Carlmont”.
Woodside – revise la pagina web en: woodsidehs.org y presione en:

Nurse Corner:
Medicamentos en la Escuela
Los estudiantes nunca deben traer medicinas a la escuela. Si un
estudiante necesita tomar un medicamento durante las horas regulares de
la escuela, necesitamos una carta de autorización del doctor. El doctor
necesita especificar la clase y la cantidad de medicina que se necesita
tomar. También necesitamos que traiga la medicina en su envase original
de la prescripción. Si su hijo tiene dolor de cabeza frecuente, usted tiene
que llevarlo al doctor y tiene que traer la medicina con la nota a la oficina
de la escuela. Nosotros NO tenemos autorización para dar medicina sin
una nota del doctor. Si su hijo(a) trae medicina a la escuela sin una nota
del doctor, le pediremos que venga a recogerla.
