BAPTISMOFTHELORD–ANDOFOURSELVES Today,theChurchcelebratestheBaptismoftheLord.ThisisthethirdEpiphanyoftheChristmas Season:Christmas,Epiphany,andBaptism.AnepiphanyisamanifestationofGod’spresence.While JesusisatprayerafterHisbaptismbyhiscousin,John,themanifestationisTrinitarian.Thevoiceisthat oftheFatherdeclaringthatJesusis“MybelovedSon.“JesusistheServantofYahweh(asnotedfromthe FirstReading)andisa“manforothers.”TheSpiritisrepresentedbythedovewhichdescendsupon Jesus.AdoveisalsoasymbolofIsrael;JesustakesallofIsraeluponHimself. InthetownofAzpetia,St.IgnatiuswasbaptizedintheChurchofSt.Sebastian.Therehasbeen somedisputeastheplacewhereIgnatiuswasactuallybaptized.Thecustodianofthechurchopenedthe baptismalfontforus.ThenhenotedthatthestatueofSt.Ignatiusabovethefontwaspointingdownto thefontasiftosaythat“thisistheplacewhereIwasbaptized.”Unfortunately,theyoungIgnatius, despitebeingtonsuredasacleric,didnotlivechangedlife.Ittookacannonballandalong convalescencebeforehehadtheconversion,whichoughttohavetakenplacewhenhewasachild.He begantolivehislifeasJesuslivedHis. Baptismisathree-folddunkingintowatertosymbolizeadyingtothesinfulwaysofourpagan pastandrisingintoanewlifewithChrist.Thethreedunkingssymbolizebaptisminthenameofthe Father,andoftheSon,andoftheHolySpirit.Often,wesimplydoasmallerthree-foldpouringofthe water. Baptismhasnumerouseffectsinourlives.Itisnotjustaforgivenessoftheoriginalsinfulnessin ourlivesbutananointingoftheSpiritsothatwehavetheSpirit’sguidancetoliveaccordingtothe teachingsofJesus.BaptismgivesusanewrelationshipwithGod.Godtakesup“residence”withinus. ThisistheindwellingoftheHolyTrinity;itisalsosanctifyinggrace.Fromwithinus,Godgivesusa vocation(i.e.acalling)toholiness.GodwantsustohaveunionoronenesswithGod.Godwantsusto experiencethatwearelovedbyGod.Inreturn,we indthatwehavethedesiretoloveGod.Werespond toGod’scallwithintheframeworkofourownpersonalcapabilitiesandthecircumstancesofourculture andenvironment.Forexample,bishopsarecalledtoshepherdGod’speople.Priestsenablethepastoral ministryofthebishoptobepresenttoallpeopleinthediocese.Laypeople,bytheirvocation,engagein civicaffairsandorderthemtotheplanofGod.Nooneisexceptedorexcusedfromrespondingtothis calltoholiness.Evenprisonersarecalledtoreformtheirlivesandrehabilitatetheirhabits. OurBaptismisourwelcomingintotheChristianCommunity.Oursponsorsandotherspromise tomakesurethatwebeginorcontinuetoliveinaccordwithJesus’waysandteachings.(Thisisthe reasonwhyChristianswhoarewelcomedintotheCatholicChurcharenotre-baptizedbutareformally accepted.) DuringourBaptism,ourearsaretouchedsothatwemayheartheWordofGodandourmouths aretouchedsothatwemayproclaimwhatwehaveheard.Thus,baptismenablesustobeevangelizers andapostles.Weexercisethisministrynotonlybywhatwesaybut,moreespecially,bywhatwedo; thatis,weteachmorebyexamplethanbywords.Whenpeopleseethatwearenotrunningaftermoney, fame,position,importance,power,pleasure,oranyothersel ishpursuitbutcaringforfamilymembers, beingcontentwithwhatwehaveservingthepoorinourmidst,contributingtocharitiesandNGOs whichhelppeoplewhomwecannotreach,supportingthecommongood,andcaringforourcommon home,thesepeopleseethatwearelivingthelifeofChristJesusandthatwearehappy.Thentheybegin toaskthemselvesandus:Whatmakesyoupeoplesohappy?Theanswerisclear.Wearerespondingto calloftheTrinitywithinus;wearereceivingthegracetolivethatcallwithfaith,hope,love,peace, contentment,tranquility,andallthefruitsoftheHolySpirit;wearelivingoutourbaptism. (Prefacio de la misa de hoy) Celebramos el bautismo del Señor y, como hemos leído en el prefacio de la misa, su bautismo se acompañaba por signos extraordinarios. Esta fiesta, junta con las fiestas del nacimiento y de la Epifanía, recuerdan las tres manifestaciones distintas de Dios hecho humano que los evangelistas nos han dejado para nuestra meditación y nuestra consolación. Los pastores, los primeros que recibieron las Buenas Noticias representan a los pobres; los reyes, a los paganos; y Juan el Bautista al pueblo de Israel. Las tres escenas que hemos celebrado durante esta temporada de la Navidad nos enseñan que el Mesías, el Salvador, Jesús, nació para todos los hombres y todas las mujeres de la historia. Sus manifestaciones son himnos alegres de una esperanza universal. La fiesta de hoy también señala algo muy importante del don del bautismo en el cual cada una de nosotros participa. Los signos que estuvieron presentes en el bautismo de Jesús son signos de que nosotros, bautizos en Él, gozamos juntos con nuestro Hermano, de los regalos con que el Padre lo colmó. En el día de nuestro bautismo, una voz se escuchaba. La voz de nuestros padres y nuestros padrinos que claramente aceptó la responsabilidad seria, la de ser los primeros que nos guiarían durante la etapa de nuestras vidas jóvenes para que pudiéramos conocer la presencia del Señor en las personas y los acontecimientos de cada día y, reconociéndola en ellos, por el ejemplo de sus vidas evangélicas, supiéramos lo que es a amarlo y servirlo durante todos los años siguientes. Y, en el mismo día se escuchaba otra voz, la del sacerdote o el diácono que nos aceptó en la iglesia en el nombre de la comunidad cristiana universal. Verdaderamente aquellas voces eran las voces de Dios que nos dotaba del don de la fe. Por nosotros en ese día ninguna paloma se veía. Pero, como Jesús en su bautismo, recibimos una unción. La santa crisma que se untaba en la cabeza de cada uno de nosotros simbolizó la posibilidad también por nosotros de vivir una vida de alegría a pesar de las dificultades futuras que han que venir durante el trascurso de una vida, exactamente como fueron una parte de la experiencia de Jesús. Y aquella experiencia, la de tener una confianza sonriente en frente de todo lo que la vida ofrece, nos habilita aceptar nuestra propia responsabilidad a salir y compartir la Buena Nueva con todos, especialmente con los que Dios ama con un amor preferencial.
