“Branches of palm, olive, or sometimes even budding willow, are ancient symbols of victory and hope, as well as of new life. The procession celebrating Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem overflowed with praise and excitement, as onlookers waved these triumphant branches and proclaimed their blessings. Yet, in a few days, they will cry ‘”Crucify him!”’ The crowd’s change of heart illustrates the problem of holding God to our expectations. The crowd expected a liberating leader, the Messiah, to free them from Roman oppression. Jesus instead takes up his cross and invites us to do the same. Through his Death and Resurrection he is indeed a liberator, bur from death and sin, not from Rome. But unable to see past their need, the crowd’s disappointment turns into anger and a death order. As we enter Holy Week, Palm Sunday teaches us to let God be God, and to trust in God’s wisdom not only to meet but shatteringly to exceed our expectations.” " As we embark upon this holiest week of the year, what is it the we need Jesus to liberator us from? Let the palm branches we place in our homes today remind us the Christ the Liberator makes us free to live in hope and love, no matter what. Oración de colocación de Palmas Bendecidas en el Hogar The branches that are blessed and brought home on Palm Sunday are placed near the cross and Scriptures. After dinner, or at another time on Palm Sunday, the household gathers in prayer. All make the sign of the cross. Leader: Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! We have come to the last days of Lent. Today, we hear the reading of the Passion. That story will remain with us as we leave Lent behind on Holy Thursday and enter into the Three Days when we celebrate the mystery of Christ passing through suffering and death to life at God's right hand. St. Paul instructs us that "we are always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our body. For we who live are constantly being given up to death for the sake of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh." All: Our Father, who are in heaven... " Leader: Let us pray: Blessed are you, God of Israel, so rich in love and mercy. Let these branches ever remind us of Christ's triumph. May we who bear them rejoice in his cross and sing your praise for ever and ever. All: Amen. Leader: May the Lord bless us, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The palm branches may now be placed where they will be displayed during the coming year. A Blessed Holy week. Fr. Philip Philip Benizi, Benizi, O.S.M O.S.M Catholic Catholic Community Community Page 4 Page 4 Treasures from our Tradition Is today “Palm Sunday” or “Passion Sunday”? Though now known officially as Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord, confusion is understandable, since before the 1969 reform of the calendar two separate Sundays bore these titles. Passion Sunday was a week before Palm Sunday. To add to the confusion, the Gospel accounts of the Passion of the Lord were not read on Passion Sunday, but on Palm Sunday! On Passion Sunday, the cross and statues were veiled in full purple drapes. The organ had fallen silent at the beginning of Lent, and now the sanctuary bells were replaced by wooden clappers. The introit (opening chant) for the old Mass of Passion Sunday hints at a reason for reform: “Do me justice, O God, and fight my fight against a faithless people” (Psalm 42). This liturgy was laden with references to the “infidelity” of the Jews, a theme that gave rise to inflammatory preaching and, in some places, attacks against the persons and property of the Jewish people. This does not stand as a “treasure” of any sort in our tradition. Our authentic tradition, rather, is the ability to reflect and repent and to seek reconciliation with the Jews, our brothers and sisters in the love and service of God. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Living God’s Word GOD’S WORD TODAY Our Lenten journey of conversion today reaches the holy city of Jerusalem. “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Throughout Lent we have been journeying with the Lord to Jerusalem. Today he enters the holy city amid cries of joy and gladness. Those cries of joy turn quickly to cries of pain and anguish, which culminate in the words of abandonment that Jesus utters from the cross. Imagine the despair the Lord experienced when he felt abandoned by all, especially his own Father. As we prepare to listen to God’s word, let us remember the pain and anguish that the Lord Jesus suffered on our behalf. My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? — (Psalm 52) The account of Christ’s passion according to Mark. — (Mark 14:1‐15:47 [15:1‐39]) SUFFERING Jesus did not come to do away with suffering or remove it. He came to fill it with his presence. —Paul Claudel From Saint Margaret Sunday Missal, copyright © J. S. Paluch Company PROPHETIC ANOINTING The solemnity of today’s readings invites us into silent contemplation of the mystery of our redemption. There are so many levels on which to understand the events of the Passion. The woman who anoints Jesus acts prophetically in a way that the other disciples do not yet grasp. Anointing is for priests, prophets, and kings, and also for the preparation of the dead. It is for healing and for holiness. Her action acknowledges the imminent events of the passion and death of the Lord, and points toward his resurrection and triumph over evil and death. He is priest and victim, prophet and God, King and Lord. All these things are acknowledged in her prophetic anointing. ¿Por qué me has abandonado?” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
