The theme of vocation stands out in the biblical Readings of this Sunday — the
Second in Ordinary Time. In the Gospel there is call to the first disciples by
Jesus; in the First Reading is the call of the Prophet Samuel. In the forefront of
both these accounts is the importance of the figure who plays the role of
mediator, helping people to recognize God’s voice and to follow it.
In the light of these two texts, I would like to stress the crucial role of the
spiritual director in the journey of faith and, in particular, in the response to the
vocation of special consecration for the service of God and of his People. The
Christian faith already in itself implies proclamation and witness. Indeed, it
consists in adherence to the Good News that Jesus of Nazareth has died and
risen, that he is God. And so it is that the call to follow Jesus more closely,
giving up the formation of a family of one’s own so as to dedicate oneself to the
great family of the Church, normally passes through the witness and introduction
of an “elder brother”, who is usually a priest. This is so but we should not forget
the fundamental role of parents who, with their genuine and joyful faith and their
conjugal love, show their children that it is beautiful and possible to build the
whole of life on God’s love.
Dear friends, let us pray to the Virgin Mary for all educators, especially priests
and parents, that they may be fully aware of the importance of their spiritual role
in order to encourage the young not only in their human growth but also to
respond to God’s call, to say: “Speak Lord, for your servant hears”.

Together, as one family of God, we continue to build the Kingdom of God here
in South Florida.
Because of you and your stewardship through the
Archbishop’s Charities and Development Drive (ABCD), in the past year alone,
you are helping to train the largest group of seminarians the Archdiocese has
enjoyed in many years; through ABCD you are assisting our most needy Catholic
elementary and high schools, and you are continuing to support the
evangelization efforts within our migrant community in south Dade. Thanks to
your support of ABCD our Respect Life ministry continues to grow, and we
continue to minister to the seafarers and at the airports. These are extraordinary
accomplishments – all made possible because of you!

Segundo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
1 Sm 3:3b-10, 19; Sal 40: 2, 4, 7-8, 8-9, 10; 1 Cor 6:13c-15a, 17-20; Jn 1:35-42
Las lecturas bíblicas de este domingo —el segundo del tiempo ordinario—, nos
presentan el tema de la vocación: en el Evangelio encontramos la llamada de los
primeros discípulos por parte de Jesús; y, en la primera lectura, la llamada del
profeta Samuel. En ambos relatos destaca la importancia de una figura que
desempeña el papel de mediador, ayudando a las personas llamadas a reconocer
la voz de Dios y a seguirla.
A la luz de estos dos textos, quiero subrayar el papel decisivo de un guía
espiritual en el camino de la fe y, en particular, en la respuesta a la vocación de
especial consagración al servicio de Dios y de su pueblo. La fe cristiana, por sí
misma, supone ya el anuncio y el testimonio: es decir, consiste en la adhesión a
la buena nueva de que Jesús de Nazaret murió y resucitó, y de que es Dios. Del
mismo modo, también la llamada a seguir a Jesús más de cerca, renunciando a
formar una familia propia para dedicarse a la gran familia de la Iglesia, pasa
normalmente por el testimonio y la propuesta de un “hermano mayor”, que por lo
general es un sacerdote. Esto sin olvidar el papel fundamental de los padres, que
con su fe auténtica y gozosa, y su amor conyugal, muestran a sus hijos que es
hermoso y posible construir toda la vida en el amor de Dios.
Queridos amigos, pidamos a la Virgen María por todos los educadores,
especialmente por los sacerdotes y los padres de familia, a fin de que sean
plenamente conscientes de la importancia de su papel espiritual, para fomentar en
los jóvenes, además del crecimiento humano, la respuesta a la llamada de Dios, a
decir: “Habla, Señor, que tu siervo escucha”.

Unidos en la Fe, Unidos en la Esperanza, Unidos en la Caridad
Juntos, como una sola familia de Dios, continuamos construyendo el Reino de Dios
en el Sur de La Florida. Gracias a ustedes y a la mayordomía que han ejercido por
medio de la Campaña de Caridades y Desarrollo del Arzobispo (ABCD), tan sólo en
el año pasado se ha ayudado a preparar el mayor grupo de seminaristas del que la
Arquidiócesis haya disfrutado en muchos años; a través del ABCD, ustedes están
ayudando a nuestras escuelas primarias y secundarias católicas más necesitadas, y
ustedes siguen apoyando los esfuerzos de evangelización dentro de nuestra
comunidad de migrantes en el sur de Dade. Gracias a su ayuda al ABCD, nuestro
ministerio de Respeto a la Vida sigue creciendo, y seguimos sirviendo
espiritualmente al personal marítimo y de los aeropuertos. Estos son logros
extraordinarios, y todos han sido posibles gracias a ustedes!
Si usted aún no ha respondido a la carta que le envió el Arzobispo Thomas G.
Wenski por correo, por favor, tómese un tiempo para considerar su promesa de este
año. Su fiel y generosa participación al ABCD viene de las tantas bendiciones que
Dios derrama sobre usted y sobre sus seres queridos. Le pedimos su continuo apoyo
y le invitamos a permanecer con nosotros Unidos en la Fe, Unidos en la Esperanza y

escuchando en nuestras vidas el llamado

como el Salmista, “Aquí estoy, Señor;
vengo a hacer tu voluntad.”
