A Catholic community devoted to deep and abiding friendship with Jesus Christ Established 1700 3320 St. Peter’s Drive Waldorf Maryland 20601 301-843-8916 www.stpeterswaldorf.org Mission Statement Saint Peter’s Church is a Catholic community devoted to deep and abiding friendship with Jesus Christ. We strive to build upon the legacy of faith entrusted to us by the Catholic pioneers who courageously established Saint Peter’s – an ethnically and economically diverse community unified through the power of the Holy Spirit in the truth and love of Jesus Christ. Mindful of this legacy as well as our need for ongoing conversion amidst new challenges, today, in our fourth century, we seek friendship with Jesus through our commitments to: • Understand and proclaim His saving truth revealed in the Bible in union with the official teaching authority of the Catholic Church. • Worship joyfully His living presence in the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. • Recognize His face in those we are privileged to serve and protect, particularly the poor and vulnerable. • Welcome Him in each other through our fellowship and unity amidst the rich diversity of our parish community. • Encounter Him and the beauty of His creation by preserving our parish as a peaceful and prayerful sanctuary. • Hear His personal call to holiness and help families embrace it in all vocations, especially to priesthood or consecrated life. • Imitate His generous self-giving as a way of life that expresses our gratitude to Him and our love for God and neighbor. September is for Stewardship Dear Friends in Christ, Today we conclude our annual month of prayer and reflection upon our Christian stewardship as a parish. In last week’s bulletin I outlined our parish goals for the year ahead; today I will review some of the highlights of our efforts to achieve our goals from September 2012. We became partners with Health Partners. Health Partners is a free clinic in Waldorf that provides medical and dental care for anyone in need. Over the past year, we established for the first time a formal relationship with the clinic. As a result, St. Peter’s contributed the following to Health Partners: • $3,000 as one of our designated charities. • 77 volunteers for client advocacy, building maintenance, and administrative and fundraising projects. Special thanks to Sandy McGraw and Audrey Dyson, who are both now serve on the board of directors for Health Partners. We used new technologies in the New Evangelization. The New Evangelization is the Church’s effort to repropose the faith to those who have drifted away from practicing our faith. We still certainly have room to improve in our use of new technologies. For example, we are using Facebook in some specific ministries, but we still don’t have a page for the parish as a whole. But we did make significant progress over the past year with our parish website. Though the site still looks pretty much the same as it did last year, its underlying architecture is completely new and much more user-friendly. With this change, we hope that our site’s content will be more comprehensive and up-to-date. We also added a mobile version of the site since increasingly people access websites through their smartphones. Special thanks to Kimberly Bean and Jim Johnson for their work on this goal. Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time We offered faith formation for life in the Year of Faith. In this “Year of Faith” throughout the Catholic Church, we conducted focus groups and surveys to review and improve our faith formation program. As a result, we streamlined our sacramental preparation programs and moved our middle school Family Program classes to Sunday mornings. Also over the course of the past year, we offered the archdiocesan “Living Catholic” course three times and began hosting archdiocesan “Faith Foundation” courses that are open to all adults and also lead to certification for catechists. We also offered new sessions for couples seeking to have their marriages blessed by the Church and increased the frequency of Natural Family Planning courses. Thanks to all who worked to achieve these objectives, especially Alice Culbreth and Marianna Hamilton. We developed a new Plan for Continuing Improvement St. Peter’s School. This is the new terminology for what we have called our “strategic plan” in recent years, and this plan is now part of the reaccreditation process. Below are some of the past year’s highlights from this new plan: • A new mission statement for the school. • A new on-line enrollment management system. • A new parent code of conduct. • Every room was rewired communications and security. for improved Special thanks to J.R. West for leading our generous volunteers, staff, and faculty to these objectives. The summary of today’s pledges and self-reports will be in the bulletin Sunday after next. Thank you for your patient attention and prayer throughout these weeks spent focusing on Christian stewardship and for all that you give so generously to St. Peter’s! In her liturgy, the Church joins with the angels to adore the thrice-holy God… From its beginning until death, human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession. ‘Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life.’ (St. Basil) Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God.” Catechism of the Catholic Church, 334336 The sanctuary light will burn this week in loving memory of Daisy Annalise Jensen. Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 29, 2013 If someone you know is seriously ill and asks to be included in the prayers for the sick, please call the parish office. Names will remain on the prayer list for four weeks unless the parish office receives a request to continue the listing. In an effort to update our list, those names that have been on for more than four weeks will be removed at the end of September. You may call at that time if you want the name put back on the list. Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Today’s Readings: Amos 6: 1a, 4-7 Psalm 146 1 Timothy 6:11-16 Luke 16: 19-31 Reflect and Discuss: † When confronted by televised images of poverty and hunger do I watch or change the channel? Am I moved or unmoved by these images? Does it make me uncomfortable when I think about the response I should be giving? † What is the answer to the growing chasm that separates those who have from those who have not? † How does the parish reach out to the Lazaruses at its front door? What messages do they have for our community? How do we reflect and act on those messages? September 29, 2013
