THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JUNE 26, 2016 Mass Intentions Today’s Gospel Reflection First Reading: 1 Kgs 19:16b, 19-21 * Psalm: Ps 16:1-2, 5, 7-11 * Second Reading: Gal 5:1, 13-18 * Gospel: Lk 9:51-62 FOCUS ON THE MISSION “There are so many things to do.” “We have so little time.” How many variations of these statements have you heard or even said yourself? Actually neither statement is completely true. There are many things to do in this life, but really few things that are vitally important. Working, searching, conniving, and worrying our way to “gratify[ing] the desires of the flesh,” as Paul relates in today’s second reading, are really nonproductive. So little time? When we take on the freedom that Christ offers us, we have all the time we need in this world, and even more in the next. Elisha, the prophet Elijah’s chosen servant, was slightly befuddled about what he should do. When Elijah called, he returned to bid farewell to his parents and provide food for his people. Only then did he follow. Jesus demands something different, something more of his disciples. He calls us to a single-minded determination to drop everything and follow him. Now, not later. MICHAEL CATHOLIC CHURCH PARADISE HILLS, SAN DIEGO JUNE 26, 2016 Dear Parishioners and friends, Peter’s Pence Collection: Be a Witness of Charity! PASTORS’ MESSAGE In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis has called each of us to be a witness of charity. He encourages us to "open our eyes and see the misery of the world, the wounds of our brothers and sisters who are denied their dignity, and let us recognize that we are compelled to heed their cry for help!" (Misericordiae Vultus [MV], no. 15). The Peter's Pence Collection unites us in solidarity to the Holy See and its works of charity to those in need. Your generosity allows the Pope to respond to our suffering brothers and sisters. The Peter’s Pence Collection derives its name from an ancient custom. In ninth-century England, King Alfred the Great collected money, a “pence”, from landowners as financial support for the Pope. Today, the Peter’s Pence Collection supports the Pope’s philanthropy by giving the Holy Father the means to provide emergency assistance to those in need because of natural disaster, war, oppression, and disease. (USCCB) This weekend our Diocese will take up the Peter’s Pence Collection, which provides Pope Francis with the funds he needs to carry out his charitable works around the world. The proceeds benefit our brothers and sisters on the margins of society, including victims of war, oppression, and disasters. Join our Holy father as a witness of charity to those who are suffering. Fr. Manny Ediza & Fr. Bernard Rañoa "Charity is infectious, it excites, it risks and it engages! For true charity is always unmerited, unconditional and gratuitous!" −Pope Francis, Homily, February 15, 2015 P.S. When you are out of town, visit us at www.stmichaelsandiego.org and keep posted with our parish news and events. We in the Church have a great struggle to defend life… life is a gift not a threat.” - Pope Benedict XVI Join us in praying the Rosary to promote a Culture of Life every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., in the Church. The Youth and Altar Servers will lead us in the Rosary during the month of July. Page 4 Religious Education Buena Algoso (619)470-2292 [email protected] TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION An old and still vital treasure in our tradition is a document called the “Apostolic Traditions,” giving us a snapshot of church life in third-century Rome. Its author, Hippolytus, describes the liturgical life of the church and records the actual texts of the prayers. The way he explained the various “orders” of the church was the basis for a major reform of the rites of ordination by Pope Pius XII in 1947, and later for the Second Vatican Council. Hippolytus tells us that a bishop had to be elected by the entire people, and that ordination had to take place on a Sunday in the presence of the people, the presbyters, and neighboring bishops. The bishop-candidate is ordained by the other bishops, who impose their hands on his head while everyone else keeps a profound silence, awaiting the outpouring of the Spirit. There is a prayer of blessing said by one of them, on behalf of all, asking for the Spirit and describing his ministry. Later centuries layered new features on top of this liturgy, including the requirement for three bishop consecrators. Today, whenever a new bishop is announced (election by the people is no more), a kind of genealogy is provided, tracing his pedigree through the consecrating bishops down through the centuries to Peter and the first body of believers. Every bishop today can trace his office through his consecrators back to the beginning in a tradition called “apostolic succession.” —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. ST. MICHAEL CATHOLIC CHURCH JUNE 26, 2016 PARADISE HILLS, SAN DIEGO STEWARDSHIP A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Weekend of June 25/26, 2016 Today’s Gospel reveals to us the beginning of Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem. We will journey with Jesus for many Sundays to come, and along the way he will teach us about the demands of discipleship. His instructions may seem harsh and unreasonable to our ears. His response to legitimate requests to postpone the journey reminds us that there are always justifiable excuses to defer the journey or put off the responsibilities of discipleship. Other important matters compete for our attention. Some of us must make heart-wrenching choices, but there is urgency about Jesus’ mission to bring forth God’s kingdom. His demand is that we proclaim the Kingdom of God now. Is this our first priority, or do we have other priorities? - International Catholic Stewardship Council, Parish Enews Jubilee Year of Mercy June 26, 2016 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Yet again in Ordinary Time, Jesus seems to demand extraordinary commitment. A would-be disciple enthusiastically volunteers to follow Jesus “wherever” (Luke 9:57). Jesus replies that “wherever” means “nowhere to rest his head” (9:58). To other candidates, Jesus brusquely denies reasonable requests to fulfill family obligations (9:59, 61), declaring that discipleship demands total commitment—now! But Jesus also demands that we not judge how others respond. When James and John volunteered to “call down fire from heaven” (9:54) to destroy an unwelcoming town, Jesus “turned and rebuked them” (9:55). All violence of any kind is completely unacceptable among Jesus’ disciples, a lesson this Jubilee Year of Mercy is teaching the Christian community once again. Paul’s challenge to the Galatians and us reinforces Jesus’ decisive command to James and John that they express their commitment to him through compassion for others. We must abandon the violence of “biting and devouring one another” (Galatians 5:15), choosing instead to “serve one another through love” (5:13). —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. A STEWARDSHIP PRAYER For JUNE Lord Jesus Christ, You came to bring peace and offer reconciliation. You sent your Spirit to heal the separation between people, and to reveal how it is possible for women and men to overcome their differences and celebrate their unity through your body and blood. You revealed your Father as the Father of all people; a Father who cares for every single individual and embraces them with love and mercy. It is that love and mercy, made manifest by your cross, that shines your light on us all, creates new life, offers a new way of living, and brings a Gospel message that is a sign of hope. Give us the courage to live your Gospel fully even when it brings risk, to share your word vibrantly even if it leads to scorn, and to respond to others generously even when we feel like holding back. Show us the way to live as good stewards of your presence among us, and in doing so, may we shine your light on a darkened world. Amen. A Way of Life With All Your Heart Heart to Pray Heart to Serve Heart to Share Heart to Witness Page 5 THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JUNE 26, 2016 Parish News and Announcements ALTAR SERVERS—Schedule JULY 02—FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 5:00 pm Jarrel Corpus, R.C. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.” - Romans 14:8 Page 6 26 de JUNIO de 2016 DECIMOTERCER DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO Refleciones del Evangelio Comunidad Latina CONCÉNTRATE EN LA MISIÓN “Hay tantas cosas que hacer”. “Tenemos tan poco tiempo”. Ahora, no después. Page 8 Upcoming Events / Schedule of Services JUNE 27 JULY 4 HEALING MASS at 6:00 p.m. (with Fr. Efren Borromeo) INDEPENDENCE DAY HOLIDAY (Offices will be closed) “I think we too are the people who, on the one hand, want to listen to Jesus, but on the other hand, at times, like to find a stick to beat others with, to condemn others. And Jesus has this message for us: MERCY .… THIS IS THE MOST POWERFUL MESSAGE: MERCY!” - Pope Francis YEAR OF MERCY PRAYER Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.
