The kingdom of God is at hand.
Repent, and believe in the gospel
— Mark 1:15
Gospel reading ( Mark 1: 14 – 20)
After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming
the gospel of God: “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of
God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” As he passed
by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew
casting their nets into the sea; they were fishermen. Jesus said to
them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Then
they abandoned their nets and followed him. He walked along a
little farther and saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother
John. They too were in a boat mending their nets. Then he called them. So they left their
father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him.
Brief commentary
During Cycle B of the Liturgical Year that started with the 1st Sunday of Advent we will be
reading the Gospel according to Mark. Church tradition as far back as early in the 2nd
century, has attributed it to Mark, an associate and interpreter of Peter (See Acts 12:112; 1
Pet 5:13) who wrote down what he remembered of the Lord’s words and deeds. Accepted by
the majority of scholars as the first to be written, the “martyr” spirit of the Christians in
Mark fits Rome in the 60's, time of Nero’s persecutions, just before the destruction of
Jerusalem by the Roman legions around 70 C.E. Mark’s primary purpose was to strengthen
his community's faith in Jesus as the Christ, the resurrected Son of God. With John’s arrest,
Jesus’ ministry began. Today we hear the first words spoken by Jesus according to Mark:
“This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand.” This announcement calls for
an immediate response: “Repent!”
Today’s reading offers three significant
messages:
 Jesus’ call to share in his mission is direct
and radical.
 Peter, James and John eventually become
Jesus’ most intimate friends. Yet, they are
also the ones who will most seriously
misunderstand him.
 For Mark, to follow Jesus means to walk a
journey of joy and confusion, of radical
conversion until the end.

1. Am I willing to leave what needs to be left
behind to follow Jesus? Explain.
2. Can I also put aside my fears and dislikes to try
to follow Jesus alongside others who are
different from me?

Después que tomaron preso a Juan, Jesús fue a la provincia de
Galilea y empezó a proclamar la Buena Nueva de Dios. Hablaba
en esta forma: “Se ha cumplido el tiempo, el Reino de Dios ha
llegado. Arrepiéntanse y crean en la Buena Nueva”. Jesús
caminaba por la orilla del lago de Galilea. Ahí estaban Simón y
su hermano Andrés, echando sus redes en el mar, porque eran
pescadores. Jesús los vio y les dijo: “Síganme, que yo los haré
pescadores de hombres”. Y con eso, dejaron sus redes para
acompañarlo. Poco más allá Jesús vio a Santiago, hijo de
Zebedeo, con su hermano Juan. También ellos estaban en su
barca y arreglaban las redes. De inmediato Jesús los llamó, y partieron tras él, dejando a su
padre Zebedeo en la barca con los ayudantes.
Comentario breve
A partir de hoy, leeremos el Evangelio de san Marcos. Es el ciclo B del año litúrgico de la Iglesia.
Desde el siglo II, la tradición de la Iglesia lo atribuyó a Marcos, probablemente el secretario de
Pedro (ver Hechos 12:1-12; 1 Pedro 5:13), quien escribió su evangelio basándose en los relatos de
los discípulos (principalmente de Pedro), ya que él no fue testigo presencial de los hechos que
narra. Marcos fue el primer evangelio que se escribió. La mayoría de los estudiosos piensan que
fue escrito poco antes de la caída de Jerusalén, probablemente entre los años 65-70. Los
destinatarios de este evangelio pertenecen a una comunidad amenazada por la persecución de
Nerón, y Marcos trata de fortalecer su fe en Jesucristo, el Hijo de Dios, el resucitado.
Marcos no tiene anécdotas sobre el nacimiento o la niñez de Jesús. Antes de terminar el primer
capítulo ya Jesús ha llamado a sus primeros discípulos, ha hecho sus primeras sanaciones y ha
emprendido el camino a Cafarnaúm
La lectura de hoy nos presenta tres ideas
importantes:
 Con el arresto de Juan comienza la misión de Jesús.
 Jesús anuncia la llegada del Reino de Dios que exige
conversión, es decir, un cambio radical de vida.
 Juan, Santiago y Pedro se cuentan entre los
primeros en seguir a Jesús y que luego se convierten
en sus amigos íntimos con quienes comparte su
“Transfiguración”. Sin embargo, son ellos los que
menos entienden el costo del discipulado.
Para la reflexión comunitaria:
Después de una pausa breve para reflexionar en
silencio, comparta con otros sus ideas o
sentimientos:
1. ¿Hay algo que tengo que dejar atrás para poder
seguir a Jesús? Explique.
2. ¿Puedo dejar a un lado mis sospechas y
preferencias para unirme a otros cristianos en el
seguimiento del Señor?

In addition to continuing long-standing Church tradition, many
practical reasons dictate why this ministry of money is critical for
the health and growth of the body of Christ. Your financial
contribution to your parish helps accomplish the following:
Frees priests for other tasks more closely related to their
ordained office. For the clergy to give proper time and attention
to celebrating the Eucharist, administering the sacraments,
preaching and praying.
Expands lay ministries and affords just wages. Many are
volunteers, but more and more parishes need full-time staffers to
train, coordinate, and support these volunteers. A parish staff

Adds more and better ministries, Apostolates, and services

elderly and lonely. Increasing the parish treasure increases the value
of the parish for everyone.
Establishes proper priorities in parish family and personal
lives. The sacrificial giving or tithing approach removes weekly
Church giving from the left-over donation pattern to one in which
God comes first. Countless people have found their life changed
and filled with peace because of sacrificial giving. Since we are
One Body in Christ, what we do in our local parish affects the
Church universal.

en acorde a su sacerdocio. Les proporciona mas tiempo y
atención para celebrar la Eucaristía, administrar los
sacramentos, predicar y orar.

equitativos. Muchos son voluntarios, pero cada día las
parroquias necesitan mas empleados de tiempo completo para
entrenar, coordinar y apoyar a esos voluntarios. Los fondos
para el mantenimiento administrativo de una parroquia
provienen mayormente de las ofrendas de los domingos.
Añade mas y mejores ministerios, apostolados y servicios a
la parroquia. Expandir programas para parroquianos de
todas las edades; proporcionar mas ayuda para las madres
solteras, los ancianos y los solitarios. Aumentando el tesoro
parroquial aumenta el valor de la parroquia para todos.
Establece las prioridades en la familia parroquial y en la
vida personal. El sacrificio de dar el diezmo libera a la
iglesia de dar de lo que sobra de las donaciones a uno en el
cual Dios es primero. Miles de personas han experimentado
paz y cambios en sus vidas a través de este sacrificio. Dado
que somos un Cuerpo en Cristo lo que hacemos en nuestra
parroquia afecta la iglesia universal.
