The Parish Census taker walked up to
a wrinkled little older man rocking in a chair on
his porch.
“I couldn’t help noticing how happy you look,”
she said. “What’s your secret for a long, happy
life?”
“I smoke three packs of cigarettes a day,” the
man boasted. “I also drink a case of whiskey a
week, eat fatty foods, and never exercise.”
“Wow! That’s amazing,” said the visitor. “And
just how old are you?”
“Twenty-six,” the man replied.

Gospel (Mark 9: 30 - 37)
Jesus and his disciples left from there and began a journey through Galilee, but he did not wish
anyone to know about it. He was teaching his disciples and telling them, "The Son of Man is to
be handed over to men and they will kill him, and three days after his death the Son of Man
will rise." But they did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to question him.
They came to Capernaum and, once inside the house, he began to ask them, "What were you
arguing about on the way?" But they remained silent. They had been discussing among
themselves on the way who was the greatest. Then he sat down, called the Twelve, and said to
them, "If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all."
Taking a child, he placed it in the their midst, and putting his arms around it, he said to them, "Whoever receives one
child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me."
Brief commentary
Last week we read how Jesus began to announce the path of suffering that his mission would take him. Shocked,
Peter resisted. Yet, instead of retracting, Jesus announced to his disciples that all who seek to follow him must
likewise be ready to give up everything for the sake of the Gospel and the Kingdom. This week we hear the second of
three passion announcements at the thematic center of Mark’s gospel. This time the focus is not so much on a radical
commitment to Jesus, come what may, but on another inherent characteristic of discipleship, service. After a year
with Jesus, the disciples still misunderstood what following him entails. We can imagine that Mark’s community also
suffered from this misunderstanding, as have Christians throughout the centuries. Although we know Jesus’ words
and example, we do not always understand him. Our life in him is paradoxical: to live we must die to ourselves. As
with last Sunday’s gospel reading, we learn this week another paradox of the Christian reality: to be the first you
must be the ‘servant of all’, to be great you must become small.
The world’s way of thinking and its values have remained relatively unchanged throughout history. In our own time,
we listen so incessantly to the message, “You owe it to yourself,” “Indulge yourself,” “Deny yourself nothing,”
“You’ve earned it,” that we can actually come to believe it. We admire the wealthy, the powerful and the famous.
Yet, is this all we can achieve? Is wealth, power, fame, pleasure the most we can strive for? Is that all, or do we have
the potential for something greater, deeper, more meaningful, more significant and critical? We really need more
than celebrities and heroes in our lives, we need saints. Saints interpret for us the meaning of the radical demands of
discipleship. With the same passion, desire, commitment, intensity and ambition with which so many of us in our
society run after wealth, power, pleasure and fame, so the saints ran after poverty, service, and authentic humility.
And instead of running after those the world considers the winners, Jesus calls us to seek and to receive those ‘little
ones’, the vulnerable whom the world ignores, for by so doing we shall seek and receive him.

♦ As Jesus was “handed over,” so can his disciples who seek to
live the gospel with authentically – such as the letter of James
in our second reading today describes – can likewise expect to
be “handed over.” Yet, the disciples are those who
accompany Jesus on his journey, and share in his redemptive
struggles and sufferings.
♦ Christian priorities are counter to the world’s priorities, but
are in fact what can heal, vivify and renew the world. Instead
of power and status, Jesus’ disciples follow his example, the
Servant of God of the human race who has come to serve.
♦ Christians are those who welcome Jesus in the ‘little ones’.
Service means helping others, seeking nothing in return. We
serve our neighbor, particularly those in need, simply because
they need our help.

Y saliendo de allí, iban caminando por Galilea; él no quería que se supiera, porque iba enseñando a sus
discípulos. Les decía: “El Hijo del hombre será entregado en manos de los hombres; le matarán y a los
tres días de haber muerto resucitará.” Pero ellos no entendían lo que les decía y temían preguntarle.
Llegaron a Cafarnaúm, y una vez en casa, les preguntaba: “De qué discutíais por el camino?” Ellos
callaron, pues por el camino habían discutido entre sí quién era el mayor.
Entonces se sentó, y llamó a los Doce, y les dijo: “Si uno quiere ser el primero, sea el último de todos y
el servidor de todos.” Y tomando un niño, le puso en medio de ellos, le estrechó entre sus brazos y les
dijo: “El que reciba a un niño como éste en mi nombre, a mí me recibe; y el que me reciba a mí, no me
recibe a mí sino a Aquel que me ha enviado.”
Comentario breve
La semana pasada leímos como Jesús comenzó a anunciar el camino del sufrimiento a que su misión lo llevaría. Conmocionado
Pedro resistió. Pero en vez de retractar sus palabras, Jesús anuncio a sus discípulos que todos los que deseen seguirle también
tienen que estar dispuestos a renunciarlo todo a favor de la causa del evangelio y del reino. Esta semana escuchamos la segunda
prenuncia de la pasión que se encuentra en el centro temático del evangelio de Marcos. Esta vez el enfoque no es tanto en el
compromiso a Jesús, pase lo que pase, sino en otra característica inherente del discipulado, el servicio.
Después de un año con Jesús, los discípulos todavía no comprendían lo que seguirle conlleva. Nos podemos imaginar que la
comunidad de Marcos también sufrió de esta falta de entendimiento, tanto como lo han hecho los cristianos a lo largo de los
siglos. Aunque conocemos las palabras y ejemplo de Jesús, no siempre lo comprendemos. Nuestra vida es paradójica: para vivir
debemos de morir a nosotros mismos. Como con el evangelio de la semana pasada, esta semana aprendemos otra paradoja de la
realidad cristiana: para ser los primeros tenemos que ser los últimos y ser el ‘siervo de todos’; para ser grande hay que reducirse.
El mundo con su manera de pensar y valorar no ha cambiado mucho a lo largo de la historia. En nuestro propio tiempo, oímos
el mensaje incesante: “Te lo mereces,” “Darte todos los gustos,” “No te niegues nada,” “Te lo has ganado.” Oímos este mensaje
tan constantemente que podemos llegar al punto de creerlo. Admiramos al rico, al poderoso y al famoso. Pero, ¿es esto lo único
que podemos lograr? ¿Es la riqueza material, poder, fama y placer lo más que podemos aspirar? ¿Es eso todo, o es que tenemos
el potencial para algo mayor, más profundo, más significativo, más significante y critico? De veras que necesitamos más que los
“celebrities” (las personas celebres de la cultura popular; la celebridad). E incluso, necesitamos más que héroes; ¡necesitamos
santos y santas! Los santos interpretan para nosotros el significado y las exigencias radicales del discipulado cristiano. Con la
misma pasión, deseo, compromiso, intensidad, ambición con que tantos en nuestra sociedad corren detrás de las riquezas, el
poder, el placer y la fama; de esa manera corren los santos detrás de la pobreza, del servicio, y de la humildad autentica. Y en
vez de correr detrás de los que el mundo considera los ganadores y exitosos, Jesús nos llama a buscar y recibir a los ‘pequeños’, a
los vulnerables quien el mundo ignora; porque haciendo así lo buscaremos y recibiremos a él.
La lectura de hoy nos presenta tres ideas
importantes:
♦ También como Jesús fue “entregado,” así sus discípulos que
buscan vivir el evangelio con autenticidad – como lo describe la
carta de Santiago en nuestra segunda lectura de hoy – pueden
igualmente ser “entregados.” Los discípulos son los que
acompañan a Jesús en su jornada, y comparten en sus
adversidades y sufrimientos.
♦ Las prioridades cristianas van contra las prioridades del mundo,
pero en realidad pueden sanar, vivificar y renovar el mundo. En
vez de ir en busca de poder y estatus, los discípulos de Jesús siguen
su modelo ideal, el Siervo de Dios y la raza humana que ha venido
para servir.
♦ Los cristianos son los que reciben a Jesús en los ‘pequeños’. El
servicio significa ayudar a otros, buscando nada en recompensa.
Servimos a nuestro vecino, particular a los necesitados,
simplemente porque necesitan de nuestra ayuda.

silencio, comparta con otros sus ideas o sentimientos.
1. ¿De qué discutían por el camino? ¿Cuáles son
nuestras preocupaciones y ambiciones, las metas y
deseos de nuestro corazón? ¿Cómo pueden ser estas
preocupaciones y ambiciones, metas y deseos más
como las de Jesús?
2. ¿Cómo buscas al ‘pequeño’ en tu familia, parroquia, y
comunidad para servirle?
3. ¿A quienes más admiras? (Nota: Llegamos a
parecernos a lo que más admiramos.) ¿Estas dispuesto
a leer biografías de los santos? Si ya lo has hecho,
¿como has sido afectado?

Cuando donas sangre estás ayudando a vivir a cuatro
personas más. Si estás sano y puedes, comparte el don
de la vida donando sangre. En la última campaña
llevada a cabo en St. Agnes, el día 18 de enero de 2015,
