June 26, 2016 HOLY HOUR / HORA SANTA The next Holy Hour is scheduled for Monday, June 27, from 6:00—7:00 pm. de las 6:00 pm a - St. John Vianney TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION An old and still vital treasure in our tradition is a document called the "Apostolic Traditions," giving us a snapshot of church life in third-century Rome. Its author, Hippolytus, describes the liturgical life of the church and records the actual texts of the prayers. The way he explained the various "orders" of the church was the basis for a major reform of the rites of ordination by Pope Pius XII in 1947, and later for the Second Vatican Council. Hippolytus tells us that a bishop had to be elected by the entire people, and that ordination had to take place on a Sunday in the presence of the people, the presbyters, and neighboring bishops. The bishop-candidate is ordained by the other bishops, who impose their hands on his head while everyone else keeps a profound silence, awaiting the outpouring of the Spirit. There is a prayer of blessing said by one of them, on behalf of all, asking for the Spirit and describing his ministry. Later centuries layered new features on top of this liturgy, including the requirement for three bishop consecrators. Today, whenever a new bishop is announced (election by the people is no more), a kind of genealogy is provided, tracing his pedigree through the consecrating bishops down through the centuries to Peter and the first body of believers. Every bishop today can trace his office through his consecrators back to the beginning in a tradition called "apostolic succession." —Rev. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, © Copyright, J. S. The message is clear, a true disciple must be willing to undergo what may seem like a stern call, be ready to give up the “flesh” that represents the things of this world—we are born in the flesh. Yet, as true disciples we must live by the spirit of our Lord, Jesus. This will require everything of us as we must be willing to take up the action of wholehearted obedience. We cannot hesitate or make excuses for not taking up the mantle of a true disciple of Christ. Jesus, we learn, was resolute in his purpose and his mission. Jesus does not look back, makes no excuses or wavers from his love and obedience to the Father. It is this type of discipleship that we are being asked to undertake. Christ has set us free so that we do not have to submit to the yoke of slavery, namely sin. He asks us to follow his spiritual law, our commandment to serve one another through love, “you shall love your neighbor as yourself”. . . this is the whole law fulfilled. The law of Christ does not say “love this type of person or only those like you,” it means that we cannot limit our love as our Savior did not limit his love, he freely loved everyone, including his love of forgiveness of those who put him to death. This may seem hard or harsh but as Disciples of Christ we must make a radical commitment to Christ—we are on a journey that requires a total commitment to our Lord. . . we cannot serve two masters, it is either the “flesh of the world or Christ.” Which will you chose? My fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, this is the last “Pastor’s Corner.” I begin my assignment next week at Holy Family parish. I too must answer the call to discipleship and I am under the same commandment of Christ to accept his call to “follow him.” This “call” is full of blessings, expectations and a firm commitment to fulfill the mission I must undertake as a servant of Christ. I will cherish the time I have spent at St. Lawrence, the friendships and yes, the uncomfortable challenges—these are all part of the journey of growth and faith. May the Lord bless you and protect you as your journey of faith continues. Father Enrique TIL WE MEET AGAIN FATHER ENRIQUE! A would-be disciple enthusiastically volunteers to follow Jesus "wherever" (Luke 9:57). Jesus replies that "wherever" means "nowhere to rest his head" (9:58). To other candidates, Jesus brusquely denies reasonable requests to fulfill family obligations (9:59, 61), declaring that discipleship demands total commitment--now! But Jesus also demands that we not judge how others respond. When James and John volunteered to "call down fire from heaven" (9:54) to destroy an unwelcoming town, Jesus "turned and rebuked them" (9:55). All violence of any kind is completely unacceptable among Jesus' disciples, a lesson this Jubilee Year of Mercy is teaching the Christian community once again. Paul's challenge to the Galatians and us reinforces Jesus' decisive command to James and John that they express their commitment to him through compassion for others. We must abandon the violence of "biting and devouring one another" (Galatians 5:15), choosing instead to "serve one another through love" (5:13).
