August 9, 2015 — Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time DIOCESE OF AUSTIN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN CENTRAL TEXAS St. Mary’s Catholic Church OUR MISSION STATEMENT St. Mary's is a community of believers dedicated to the living worship of God. As the only Catholic Church in Limestone County, our faith community reflects the ethnic diversity of the towns in which we live. We gather to fulfill our mission as disciples of Jesus Christ: we hear His Word, we celebrate the Sacraments and we witness His love to others. Our Christian witness consists of sharing our spiritual gifts with the grace of God and the example and prayers of our patron saint, the Immaculate Conception, among us and with others - striving to grow in Holiness. Aug. 8-9, 2015 -- 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time At times in our life’s journey, we may experience periods of deep emptiness and pain, as Elijah did. Yet God feeds us not just with ordinary food, but with himself. Like Elijah, we must have the courage to trust in God, to receive the life-giving food God provides and to continue God’s work in hope and faith. What is that work? To witness to God’s presence in every human life; to respond to human need and to change systems that perpetuate suffering; to be a witness to human solidarity and to work for the common good. Record Year For Knights of Columbus The Knights of Columbus set a new all-time record last year (2014) for charitable donations and service hours with $173,550,680 in donations and more than 71.5 million hours of service. The numbers were announced at the annual Organizational Meeting of State Deputies in New Haven, Ct. The number of service hours rose more than a million hours over the previous year’s total, according to the Knights of Columbus Annual Survey of Fraternal Activity for the year ending Dec. 31, 2014. Donations grew by more than $3.4 million since 2013, achieving an increase in giving for the 15th consecutive year. “These numbers show the Knights of Columbus has the courage to make a witness to charity and to practice fraternal outreach to those in need,” Supreme Knight Carl Anderson said. Among its major donations in 2014, the Knights of Columbus made a gift of $1.4 million to this summer’s Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles. The funds covered the cost of transportation, housing and meals for the athletes, supplementing the Knights of Columbus state jurisdiction’s individual support to the Special Olympics athletes. Another unique initiative in 2014 was the Knights of Columbus Christian Refugee Relief Fund, which has contributed 2.6 million for humanitarian assistance in Iraq and the surrounding region. “It has shocked the conscience of the world that people are systematically being purged from the region where their families have lived for millennia - simply for their faith.” said Mr. Anderson at the program’s inception in August. “It is imperative that we stand in solidarity with them.” Gifts by the Knights of $200,000 each were also made to the Byzantine and Latin Rite Catholic communities of war-torn Ukraine for humanitarian relief, supporting projects that feed and aid homeless children and refugees living on the streets of the capital city of Kiev. The Knights continued to support their local communities in 2014 through such programs as Coats for Kids (which the local council in Mexia has participated in for the past 2 years), the Food for Families initiative and blood drives. The Knights also gave assistance to Habit for Humanity (Mexia council helped with this also), the Global Wheelchair Mission and other large-scale charitable organizations. During the past decade the Knights of Columbus donated nearly $1.55 billion to charity and 691 million hours of service in support of charitable initiatives. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS I n Service To One.
