We often equate the need for mercy with the shame of admitting a terrible wrong. We may speak of the need for forgiveness or reconciliation after an argument, but to say we need mercy is going too far. It would mean saying we did something horrible, but a squabble is nothing of the sort. It is striking to read the words of Pope Francis in an interview in 2013. Fr. Sparado, SJ asked Pope Francis, “Who is Jorge Mario Bergoglio?” With all simplicity, the Holy Father answered, “I am a sinner. This is the most accurate definition. It is not a figure of speech, a literary genre. I am a sinner.” He explained that he could say this or that about himself, but “the best summary, the one that comes more from the inside and I feel most true is this: I am a sinner whom the Lord has looked upon.” At first glance, these words might startle us. Why would he say he is a sinner if he is the pope? But if we delve deeper than our initial reaction will allow, we will find a different story and a much deeper meaning. Mercy is for Everyone Why did Pope Francis answer in this way? Because he realized that mercy stretches beyond the woes of the worst wrongs. It reaches into even the smallest, most hidden hurts and faults. Yes, our Holy Father recognized the essential truth that mercy is for everyone. Mercy is not reserved for the worst wrong you can think of. Why? Because mercy is love in action. It is love in the face of sin and misery. It is proof that love is real. In a recent interview. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI said that man often hides a “deep knowledge of his wounds and his unworthiness before God” under a mask, but “He is waiting for mercy.” We may not always recognize it, but deep down, when we equate the need for mercy with the greatest sin, we may be hiding from our own sin and misery. We may be hiding our deep desire to know that love is real and will accept us as we are. As this Easter season draws to a close, let us run to Jesus and invite Him into our hearts, seeking His love and mercy. Keeping the Seasons Sunday, May 8th You Will Receive Power Today’s Readings: Acts 1:1–11; Psalm 47:2–3, 6–7, 8–9; Ephesians 1:17–23 or Hebrews 9:24–28; 10:19–23; Luke 24:46– 53. Traditionally celebrated forty days after Easter, this feast has been transferred to Sunday in many dioceses so that more people have access to celebrate the mystery of the Ascension. It celebrates the exaltation of Christ, when he takes his place at the right hand of God. Since the Resurrection, the disciples have encountered Christ several times. Jesus continued to prepare them to carry out the mission. Today, we hear him commission his disciples (including us) to go out to the ends of the earth proclaiming salvation. This is a powerful image and message. As members of the Body of Christ, we have been gifted with the power from on high, the Holy Spirit, in order to preach the Gospel to all peoples. Though not all of us are called to ordained ministry, or even to be missionaries who travel to other countries, we are called to make known throughout the world all the things that Christ taught and promised. The Church, Christ’s Body, becomes a sacrament of his presence for the entire world. Our common life proclaims this Good News. We, the baptized, make up the Body of Christ, a sign to witness, to the ends of the earth, the magnificent love and mercy of our God. Let us continue to shout “alleluia” and praise God for his marvelous deeds. Consider gathering a group from your parish to strategize new ways of evangelizing the community and your neighborhood.
