The fact that you are in this church and reading this bulletin means you know that the way we choose to live our life matters. Personal experience teaches us that our life choices have consequences and by faith we know the consequences affect our eternity and the eternity of others. This week I was visiting someone in the hospital from the parish. He is a relatively young man. After praying together he said to me, "You know, Father, I'm kind of glad this happened to me" (referring to his sudden and serious health scare). "It has woken me up to realize that my time is short", he continued. His comments helped me to reflect on my own apathy and laziness. It's easy to get stuck in a rut. I usually do the things I have to, but sometimes I don't do the things I should. Days go by, then weeks, and months. Those are wasted hours we never get back. This week I am going to review my goals and priorities for both the Summer and the Fall. What do I want to accomplish? What does God want me to accomplish...not only the practical things, but also in my relationships, and above all in my friendship with God himself? If all of us do this kind of regular personal review, there is no doubt that we will do wonderful things for God, our families, our neighborhood, and our parish. Time is our most precious gift. Katharine was the daughter of a wealthy banker. Her father believed their great fortune meant that God had great expectations for its use. Katharine was influenced to devote her life and wealth to the poor. She founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament to serve Native and African Americans with education, material assistance, and the Gospel. With her twenty million–dollar fortune she founded sixty schools and established Xavier University for African-Americans. Katharine and her sisters ministered tirelessly. Like the seventy disciples in today’s Gospel, they were despised by some for their work, called vicious names, and spat upon. Katharine embraced poverty because of her love for Jesus Christ, gratitude for his sacrifice on the cross, and desire to be united with him forever. Blessed Sacrament Sisters serve today, bringing the message of today’s Gospel: “The kingdom of God is at hand for you” (Luke 10:9) Non ci si fa da sé discepoli di Gesù.
