Page 2 The Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” Jesus is our ultimate leader. He sets us on the path of the kingdom and gives us all the teaching we need to follow him to that destination. He tells us that the first commandment is the best and only one we need: From the commandment to love and obey God, all other laws and prophecies are derived. If we want to know how to live, love God. And if we need particular direction for a special situation, move in the direction of love. And if decisions need to be made, choose love. And if suffering comes, cling to love and not to fear and bitterness. When we’re lost, call out for love’s guidance. When death is near, believe in love and we will see it face to face. The guidelines for kingdom living are clear, simple, and compact. If it seems murky, it’s because we’re not paying attention. Those who remain close to the roots of love in every aspect of their lives and draw all their decisions from its source are happy, peaceful, centered people. We know full well all the alternative lifestyles and their results. —exploring the Sunday Readings NEXT SUNDAY! November 4, 2012 ALERT: “YEAR of FAITH” EVENT! “Catholicism” DVD Presentation Thursday, November 8th 7-8:30pm in the Parish Hall Join us as we rediscover our common faith on a journey around the world and deep into our faith through “Catholicism.” With creator and host Father Robert Barron, you will learn what Catholics believe and why, while being immersed in the art, architecture, literature, beliefs, and practices of the Catholic tradition. Filmed in 50 locations throughout 15 countries, the Catholicism DVD series is on-location and in the streets illustrating the splendor of the global Church. We will meet on the second Thursday each month at 7:00pm to watch an episode of this 10-part series. Following the video presentation, we’ll gather in small groups to discuss the topic of the evening. Join us for episode 2: “Happy Are We: The teachings of Jesus.” The revelation of Jesus as God is accompanied by a stunning invitation to a unique new way of life, explained in the teachings of Jesus. To every generation, the words of Jesus have proven fascinating, disorienting, sometimes confounding, deeply transformative, and always unforgettable. Father Barron highlights the Beatitudes, the path of non-violence and lessons of forgiveness, care for the poor and our relationship with God as presented in the parables. Jesus’ teachings are illuminated during Fr. Barron’s pilgrimages to Poland, Germany, Spain and New York City. Commentaries at these sites also show how the Catholic Church is a living culture, which gives witness to the inviolable dignity of the human person. These evenings are open to everyone of the parish as a chance to delve deeper into the Catholic religion during this “Year of Faith.” Come as you can—each episode is its own entity and does not need to be viewed in conjunction with the others. If you have any questions, please contact Elena in the Parish Office. “Love God, serve God: everything is in that.” —St. Claire of Assisi Page 3 The Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time Mass Intentions Saturday...……………..November 3 9:00AM………………...Yolanda Flores, Spec. Page 5 The Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time YEAR of FAITH: Reflecting on Faith “The condition of the modern world lends greater urgency to this duty of the Church; for while men of the present day are drawn ever more closely together by social, technological and cultural bonds, it still remains for them to achieve full unity in Christ.” (Lumen Gentium 1) Do I let technology distract me from focusing on my relationship with Christ? Pray this week: O God, who gathers what has been scattered, look kindly on the flock your Son has gathered bringing all into unity with Him who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Kid’s Corner Did you know there are 15,000 different kinds of rice? If God made that many kinds of rice, imagine how many different kinds of people he made! Look at all the people you see today. Each one has a face with two eyes, a nose, a mouth, and two ears—but each face looks so different from every other face! Isn’t it wonderful that God’s creations are so endlessly interesting! —365 Fun Facts for Catholic Kids Congratulations to Fr. Rubén Arceo López on his recent appointment as Rector/University President of the Universidad Iberoamericana in Tijuana. Our Spanish speaking community knows Fr. Ruben very well as he regularly celebrates our Spanish Mass here on Sundays. We wish him all the best in his new position. November 4, 2012 It is with much gratitude that we recently received two $1000 bequests. One came from the estate of Alice McDowell and will be put toward our bathroom remodels Alice McDowell in the Church. The second came from the estate of Dorothy Lamkin. That $1000 bequest will go toward our Religious Education program. We are grateful to be remembered in the wills of these parishioners. Please include Alice and Dorothy in your prayers for their generosity to our parish. Catechism of the Catholic Church The Christian faith is not a “religion of the book.” Christianity is the religion of the “Word” of God, a word which is...incarnate and living.” (Saint Bernard, S. missus est hom. 4, 11:PL 183, 86). (CCC 108) The First Commandment of the Law of Moses makes us aware of a basic principle of our Catholic Faith: that there is no other god besides the Lord our God. Why then do we set up anything in place of him? It is a danger then to see anything in this life, including the Bible, the inspired words of our Lord God, as an end in itself, or to understand the practice of our religion as a matter of memorizing verses of Sacred Scripture. Christianity is not a religion of words gathered together, but rather the religion of the Word of God who became man for our salvation, and in fact gathers us to himself. Christianity is the religion that begins here on earth our eternal life in heaven. The Word of God makes this possible by speaking to us, by revealing himself to us so that by the power of the Holy Spirit we might come to know the Father, just as the Word, the eternal Son of the Father, knows him. The Father spoke to us before Christ with words of prophecy and promise, but in Christ we find the definitive Word of all fulfillment. —Father James M. Sullivan, O.P.
