Page 2 Fifteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time Our Challenge July 10, 2016 Join us on FRIDAY for Dinner & a Movie Night! It’s FREE! Friday, July 15th at 6pm in the Parish Hall In the parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus challenges us in at least three ways: how close we should get to suffering, how generously we should respond, and how inclusive our compassion should be. First, notice what the priest and Levite did. They crossed the road so that they wouldn’t have to get too close to the injured man who seemed to be dead. Touching a dead body would render them unsuitable for service to God. Perhaps they didn’t want to see. Could it be that the wealthy in desperately poor lands sometimes ride in cars with shades drawn so they don’t have to see the beggars surrounding them? What a contrast with the example of Mary as she stood beneath the cross and embraced all the pain that a mother can embrace when her child is tortured and killed before her eyes! Mary and the good Samaritan challenge us to move toward suffering rather than away from it. When we engage in life “up close and personal,” with open eyes and an open heart, we are much more likely to be moved to compassionate action. The second challenge the good Samaritan poses for us is how generous our compassionate action should be. Jesus raises the standard on what it means to be “good.” In many situations, it’s not enough to make donations of cash, food, or clothes; send a sympathy card; or promise to pray for others. Notice the extent of the service provided by the good Samaritan. He personally comforted the injured man, transported him to a safe haven, paid for his care, and promised to return to see if more was needed. He may have arrived late at his original destination, but sometimes God has other destinations in mind for us when we set out at the beginning of each day. Thirdly, Jesus uses the good Samaritan to underline his constant teaching that the test of Christian love is not how much we love those who love us, but how much we love those who don’t love us. Jesus’ disciples are to imitate their master’s inclusive embrace of all people and the example of the good Samaritan. We are called to extend our compassion to our “enemies” —those who get on our nerves, those who sometime put us down, those who can’t repay us, those who often disagree with us, as well as those who seek to hurt us. —Prayer Time We’ll watch the movie MOMS’ NIGHT OUT... This Christian, family-friendly comedy is good for all ages, so bring a comfortable chair & your family or a friend. Feeling overworked by her children, mother-of-three Allyson decides to go on a moms' night out with her friends, Izzy and Sondra. The three expect a night to unwind, leaving Allyson's husband, Sean, to take care of all the kids. After their reservation is canceled, however, things go from bad to worse when Allyson's sister-in-law, Bridget, realizes that her infant son, Phoenix, is missing. The four travel across the city looking for the child, and ultimately learn to quit blaming others for their own problems. Meanwhile, their husbands attempt to look after the children. What could go wrong?! Check out the movie trailer at: www.momsnightoutmovie.com Did You Know? That Sunday, July 17th is National Ice Cream Day? What does that mean to YOU? It means that in celebration of our 90th anniversary, you’ll have ice cream! Join us after all the Masses next weekend, Saturday & Sunday, for a good old fashioned ice cream social! Come to the Parish Hall to visit with friends and have a scoop or two on us! We are grateful for all those who volunteer as lectors. If you’re interested in learning more about becoming a lector, speak with Fr. Mike. The moral of the story is to love your neighbor, who may be someone you don’t know, someone that looks different than you or someone you don’t like, without expecting anything in return. EXPLORER DAY Learn More About the Priesthood On Saturday, July 16th, the Diocese of San Diego is hosting an Explorer Day for those men who are interested in exploring a possible vocation to the priesthood. The day will be held at St. Francis Center on the campus of the University of San Diego from 8:30am to 3pm. If living a life of service for Christ and the people of God is attractive to you, take advantage of the opportunity to attend this upcoming Explorer Day. Talk to Fr. Mike about getting an application. The Care and Treatment of Trafficking Victims You may be asking yourself — How can I help? Each year approximately 6,000 teenage girls are forced into prostitution in San Diego County. A presentation on trafficking victims will be given by Grace Williams from Children of the Immaculate Heart on Thursday, July 21 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Mary Star of the Sea Church in La Jolla. Grace will discuss the current efforts being taken by the Church in opening a treatment facility and shelter for female minors in San Diego County and in providing programs that supply professional therapy, schooling and job training in a healthy family-style atmosphere that are known to reduce related concerns like trauma disorders, addiction, suicide and help reintegrate women back into society. You are invited to learn, share and discuss ways to get involved. Refreshments will be served. Donations are appreciated. Save the Date for the 90-Day Kick-off party to our big 90-year celebration in November! Saturday, August 6th, noon-4:00pm Join us for a fun afternoon of food, fun, music and a chance to get to know your fellow parishioners better. Mark your calendars now and plan to join us! 90th Anniversary Fundraiser Plant Sale Next Weekend Someone has donated succulents planted in a variety of containers to be sold as a fundraiser for our anniversary. Stop by the Parish Hall next weekend after Mass to check them out. As we prepare for the Diocesan Synod, join us for a “Listening Session” Saturday, July 23rd at 10am In the Parish Hall In last weekend’s bulletin, Fr. Mike invited all parishioners to offer their ideas on three questions that will be included along with others to be discussed at the Diocese’s Synod on the family in October. Our questions focus on “the challenge to provide authentic pastoral support for those who are divorced.” You are invited to offer your feedback to these questions at our “Listening Session.” If you didn’t receive a copy of the questions stop by the Parish Office to pick up a list. Over the years our roses have been cared for by several faithful parishioners including Norm Boyer and more recently, Michele Trevino. Michele is also training the next generation in the art of rose care by occasionally including her grandson, Spencer. We are grateful for everyone’s hard work down through the decades and for the daily reminder of the beauty of all God’s creation. A Walk Down Memory Lane… Thanks to James & Loretta Rodriguez for this photo of their wedding here at St. Didacus on January 29, 1961. Kid’s Corner July 11th is the feast of St. Benedict, an abbot who was known for his knowledge of Scripture and Church music. The word “benediction” means a blessing —so when you say a blessing before each meal this week, ask your folks if you can also read a short Scripture quote or sing a short Church song in honor of St. Benedict. Here are some interesting facts about St. Benedict: 1. Saint Benedict was a teenager when he became a monk 2. Saint Benedict once lived in a hermit cave 3. Benedict died of natural causes or maybe a fever 4. St. Scholastica, the founder of the Benedictine sisters, was Benedict's sister 5. Some monks tried to poison Benedict 6. Saint Benedict is the patron saint of Europe and schoolchildren 7. There is a medal named after Benedict 8. His teaching methods were very harsh 9. He gave up his rich inheritance to become a follower of Jesus Learn more about St. Benedict’s medal on the Order of St. Benedict’s website: www.osb.org/gen/medal.html “Mercy is not an abstract concept but a lifestyle that invites Christians to make an examination of conscience and ask themselves if they place the spiritual and material needs of others before their own. A Christian who chooses to be merciful experiences true life and has ‘eyes to see, ears to listen, and hands to comfort.’ Look at Jesus; look at Jesus in the hungry, in the prisoner, in the sick, in the naked, in the person who does not have a job to support his family. Look at Jesus in these brothers and sisters of ours. Look at Jesus in those who are alone, sad, in those who make a mistake and need advice, in those who need to embark on the path with him in silence so they may feel accompanied. These are the works that Jesus asks of us. To look at Jesus in them, in these people. Why? Because Jesus also looks at me, looks at you, in that way.” —Pope Francis, June 30, 2016 during a Year of Mercy audience in St. Peter’s Square.
