Page 2 Twenty-Fourth Sunday of Ordinary Time Lost Sheep The Hebrew Bible is filled with the imagery of God being the ‘Shepherd’ of Israel. Perhaps, every religious Jew knew well Psalm 23 that read, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” Moreover, Ezekiel’s fitting critique of Israel’s shepherds, who were self-centred and looked for their own well-being rather than their flock was contrasted with the way the Lord would shepherd Israel (Ez 34,1-16) in the prophetic literature: “I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will make them lie down, says the Lord God. I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the crippled, and I will strengthen the weak; and the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them with justice” (vv.15-16). Employing the metaphor of ‘shepherd’ from the Hebrew Bible and the Jewish pastoral life, Jesus illustrates the approach of the Father towards sinners and affirms divine mercy and compassion. The shepherds normally count their sheep at the close of the day to ascertain all have returned home and are accounted for. Since sheep by their very nature are very ‘social’, it is common that an isolated sheep from the herd can easily be lost or deserted. No shepherd, who is in charge of one hundred sheep, which either belong to him or to his owner ever likes to lose his sheep, rather he takes great care not to lose one, for he knows that he is answerable to his owner, if any sheep disappear. In the parable, the love of the shepherd towards his lost sheep consists in the choice that he has to make, which appears to be irrational and illogical—leaving the ninety-nine sheep in the desert to look for a missing one without any certainty that he would find the lost one, while risking the rest of the ninety-nine. Looking for the lost one in the craggy hillsides of Palestine was and even today is not an easy task. Yet, the shepherd acts and consequently, his persistence pays off. He finds the lost sheep, lays it on his shoulders and rejoices. In the story, getting ‘lost’ is an act of the sheep, perhaps not a ‘conscious’ act; but searching and finding the ‘lost’ becomes evidently the ‘deliberate’ and ‘conscious’ act of the shepherd. So, such an act of ‘seeking’ and ‘finding’ certainly gives joy to the shepherd; it spills over to his friends and neighbors in great ‘rejoicing.’ The shepherd’s grief and anxiety is thus turned into joy, when he finds the lost one and restores it to the fold. This parable demonstrates that joyful God cannot rejoice at the loss of his own; rather his mercy culminates in search for the sinner or the lost one. He desires that all be saved and restored to fellowship with him. This does not mean that a person needs to be lost in order to be found or to be sought by God. However, when he or she is, God risks everything in order to find the lost one. Initiative comes from the Divine Shepherd. In other words, the grace for conversion and repentance comes from God and they are not the result or consequence of our human efforts. September 11, 2016 (619) 940-6193 We’ve been working for the past several months putting a Mental Health Ministry team together to serve our parish. Our team has had specific training that will help us to help you find the resources and guidance you or a family member may need in dealing with mental health issues. To help in this effort and to connect to you directly, we have established a specific St. Didacus Parish Mental Health Ministry phone line. Our St. Didacus Mental Health Ministry phone line is officially live on Tuesday, September 13th. The phone line will connect you with a member of our team. If we're not able to answer your call immediately, you can leave a message, and we will call you back within 24 hours. (In an emergency, please call 911.) We look forward, by God's grace, to being able to help you navigate what's next for you and/or your loved one. We are here to offer encouragement, prayer, and practical support. This day marks the 15th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on our nation. Please take some time to remember those who died, and the heroes who responded with compassion and mercy. “Remembering it over and over, my soul is downcast. But this I will call to mind; therefore I will hope: The LORD’s acts of mercy are not exhausted, his compassion is not spent; They are renewed each morning—great is your faithfulness!” —Lamentations 3:20-23 “I am always struck when I reread the parable of the merciful Father. ... The Father, with patience, love, hope and mercy, had never for a second stopped thinking about his wayward son, and as soon as he sees him still far off, he runs out to meet him and embraces him with tenderness, the tenderness of God, without a word of reproach. ... God is always waiting for us, He never grows tired. Jesus shows us this merciful patience of God so that we can regain confidence and hope — always!” — Pope Francis, Homily on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 7, 2013 Page 3 Twenty-Fourth Sunday of Ordinary Time September 11, 2016 Stewardship—Building up the Community of God Thank you for using your envelopes! It is modern -day slavery that is both global and local in its impact on human rights and public safety and is a $32 billion-a-year global industry with San Diego listed as a high intensity region. Recruitment of young victims is taking place in schools, trolley stops, social media and even Churches across San Diego County. You are invited to come and learn more on Saturday, October 15th, 9am-11am in the California Room of the St. Francis Center (lower level) at San Diego Mission de Alcalá, to lear n about this issue from experts like Chief Deputy District Attorney, Summer Stephan, and survivor Tom Jones and more, and to discuss ways that you can help in keeping the children, community and future generations safe from victimization and exploitation of human trafficking. A Q&A session will follow the presentation. Refreshments will be served. This presentation is appropriate for adults and teens. All are welcome. Time is running out to visit Year of Mercy holy doors. We’ll tick off the items on our “honey-do” list in preparation for our parish feast day celebration on Sunday, November 6th! Kid’s Corner Great God, we are sinners. Sometimes we get everything wrong. It is like we are facing the wrong way, dreaming the wrong dreams, working toward the wrong goals. Turn us around so that we face you, dream your dreams, work toward your goals. Great God we are sinners. Too often we are selfish— grabbing the most food, the prettiest clothes, and the coolest games for ourselves. Turn us around. Teach us to share what we have. Give us generous hearts. Great God, too often we think only of ourselves. We think about what we want, we like and what we think. Turn us around. Teach us to see all the people around us. Help us recognize what people in our families and our friends want and need and hope. Help us learn to take care of them and their needs. Great God, too often we dislike others. We dislike people who are not like us. We dislike people who make our lives even a little harder. We dislike people who get in our way. We dislike people we just don’t know. Turn us around. Teach us that people who are not just like us are your children and worthy of our friendship. Show us how to make friends with those who do not agree with us. Great God, we are sinners. We know it. We admit it and we want to change. Turn us around to face you, to become your children, to be part of your kingdom. We ask for your help in turning around, in Jesus’ name. Amen. September 11, 2016 God’s Prodigality in Liturgy There can be no more concrete expression of God’s lavish mercy and love for us than in the celebration of liturgy’s sacred mysteries, especially the Eucharist. God’s prodigality (lavish or abundant extravagance) takes many special symbolic forms during the Mass. Here are a few examples. 1. Intercessions. Always at Mass there are a number of instances we are invited to pray for others—after the “Let us pray” invitations, during the universal prayer (prayer of the faithful), at the prayers for the living and dead during the Eucharistic prayer, during the Our Father, in the quiet meditation time after Communion. Our prayer for each other is an aspect of discipleship and one way we express the worth of all others. 2. Sign of Peace. The sign of peace is an embrace given in compassion and love. GIRM (General Instruction of the Roman Missal) 82 specifies that the sign of peace is offered to those nearby. It doesn’t say to family members and friends, but to those nearby. We don’t judge whether a person is sinner or saint, wealthy or poor, lost or found—we simply offer this gift of peace because God has first given it to us. The dignity of the sign indicates the dignity of both the giver and receiver. 3. Communion. God invites us to the messianic banquet where we rejoice and feast on the very Body and Blood of God’s only-begotten Son. There is no discrimination in how the line is formed and who may come; indeed, ministers are not to judge who may receive Holy Communion but simply offer it to all those who come. Especially important is the sign of the one bread and one cup, for in the Body of Christ we are all beloved in God’s eyes. —Living Liturgy Next WEEKEND!
