Page 2 Twenty-First Sunday of Ordinary Time Go Away In this week’s Gospel Reading Jesus says that some people will come to him confidently, but he will say to them, “I don’t know where you are from. Go away, you evildoers!” This must be one of the most frightening passages in the Gospels. But if we get fearful and ask, “OK, then, what do I have to do in order not to be sent away,” we are on the wrong track entirely. Just receive the gift, open to the Lord, let the Holy Spirit of Christ in. God does not hate anything that he has made; he loves it. (See John 3:16). So you don’t have to rush out to bring sandwiches to the poor or do anything else whose purpose is to work your way into God’s love and forgiveness. The gift of God’s love and forgiveness are already there for you. But then why are those people in the Gospel passage sent away? If the gift is already there, then why don’t these people get it? Well, no gift can be given unilaterally. Successful gift-giving takes two: one to offer the gift, and one to receive it. If you refuse the gift God offers you, the gift cannot be successfully given, can it? So maybe the whole problem with these people who are sent away is their determination to do the right stuff in order to be part of the in-group. If you want to achieve for yourself what God is offering as a gift, you are in effect refusing the gift, aren’t you? And maybe that’s why Jesus says to these people, “I don’t know where you are from.” If you accept God’s gift of his forgiving love, then you are in Christ; and the spirit of Christ is in you. You don’t have to come from anywhere to him. You are your beloved’s, and he is yours, as the Song of Songs says (Song 6:3). So what you have to do in order not to get sent away is nothing. Just receive the gift, open to the Lord, let the Holy Spirit of Christ in. Then you might bring food to the poor, or write a book, or compose a symphony. But however you share your gifts, you will do so by first having opened to God’s love, which is his gift to you. —Eleonore Stump, Professor of Philosophy, Saint Louis University Thanks to the Spanish Community for the Mexican food sale last Sunday after the Masses. Through your purchases they raised $727 that was donated to our Religious Ed program! Thank you! August 21, 2016 We’ve kicked off our 90-days to our 90th anniversary...now what? We’ve got several events coming up that we need your help with. SEPTEMBER In gratitude for all our blessings here at St. Didacus, we’ll give back to our community by helping out at Fr. Joe’s Villages. On Saturday, September 17th, St. Didacus is in charge of serving breakfast at Fr. Joe’s Villages. Our shift is from 6am-9am. We have spots for 24 people to help. If you are interested, please call Cindy at the Parish Office ASAP. Fr. Joe’s would like us to provide them with a list of those attending before our scheduled date. There’s also some paperwork you’ll need to complete here in the office to be able to attend. OCTOBER On a Saturday in October, we’ll need your help here on the grounds of St. Didacus. We’ll be spiffing up the place — cleaning, painting, and various odd-jobs needed to put the sparkling touches on the parish grounds before we celebrate our feast day and official 90th anniversary on Sunday, November 6th. NOVEMBER Plan to join us on our parish feast day, Sunday, November 6th. Bishop McElroy will be here to celebrate our 10am Mass. We’ll have a reception in the Parish Hall following Mass. We’ll cap off the special day with a potluck at 5pm that will include lots of great raffle prizes. Mark your calendars now so you don’t miss it! Last Call on our 90th Anniversary t-shirts! We just have a few left in each size. They are $10 each. Don’t let the chance pass you by to show your parish spirit! Come by the Parish Office to pick one up, or give us a call and we can put one aside for you. Get ‘em while we’ve got ‘em! Page 3 Twenty-First Sunday of Ordinary Time August 21, 2016 Stewardship—Building up the Community of God Thank you for using your envelopes! Our GOAL this year: ALL parishioners tithing each week using their envelopes! The Joy of Giving Amount we need each week to cover parish operating costs: $7,155.00 General Collection, August 14, 2016: $4,575.00 Deficit for the week of August 14, 2016: —$2,580.00 Building Fund—August 14, 2016: $ 599.00 Our standards in our society are so different from God’s standards. We often rate or rank people by what they have, how powerful they are, or how successful they are. Jesus reminds us that God will not judge us by the same earthly standards. The date chosen for her canonization is the eve of the 19th anniversary of her death and the date previously established at the Vatican for the conclusion of the Year of Mercy pilgrimage of people like her who are engaged in works of mercy. Mother Teresa was widely known as a living saint as she ministered to the sick and the dying in some of the poorest neighborhoods in the world. Her simple service touched the hearts of millions of people of all faiths. Born to an ethnic Albanian family in Skopje, in what is now part of Macedonia, she went to India in 1929 as a Sister of Loreto and became an Indian citizen in 1947. She founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950. Shortly after she died in 1997, St. John Paul II waived the usual five-year waiting period and allowed the opening of the process to declare her sainthood. She was beatified in 2003. Kid’s Corner The Queenship of Mary Monday, August 22nd This is a royal day—the feast of the Queenship of Mary! To celebrate Jesus’ Mother, Mary, as the Queen of heaven, say a rosary today — or a Hail Mary. Then think about how wonderful it is that all of Jesus’ friends will someday be with him in heaven. Are you a friend of Jesus? August 21, 2016 The Narrow Gate Jesus, in today’s Gospel, shares the vision of Isaiah in the first reading. Both look to a day when Jews and Gentiles from all the nations, “from the east and the west and from the north and the south” (Lk 13:29) will come to share the bounty of God’s kingdom. Jesus’ parable makes it clear that not all will be admitted to the table in God’s kingdom, however. In context, they will be shut out who have put off for too long the discipline of the narrow gate, the same discipline that Hebrews says, seems at the time “a cause not for joy but for pain, yet later it brings the peaceful fruit of righteousness (12:11). Jesus’ words in today’s Gospel are spoken in answer to a common enough question: “Will only a few people be saved? (Lk 13:23). Typically, refusing to speculate, Jesus turns the question into a direct command. “Strive to enter through the narrow gate,” he says (v. 24). It is tempting to speculate about who will or will not be saved. But it is more important, today’s readings tell us, to submit to the discipline of the narrow gate that leads to the banquet of God’s kingdom. Then and only then will we be ready, as the responsorial psalm puts it, to “go out to all the world and tell the Good News.” —Word of Life What is HUMAN TRAFFICKING? What’s being done about it? On the Cover: Damascus (Shechem) Gate: Bab Al Amoud gate in Old Jerusalem. In its current form, the gate was built in 1537 under the rule of Suleiman the Magnificent, the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Beneath the current gate, the remains of an earlier gate can be seen, dating back to at least the time of the Roman Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century CE. One of eight gates remade in the 10th century, Damascus Gate is the only one to have preserved the same name (i.e. Bab al-Amud) in modern times. The Crusaders called it St. Stephen's Gate (in Latin, Porta Sancti Stephani), highlighting its proximity to the site of martyrdom of Saint Stephen which has been marked since the time of Empress Eudocia by a church and monastery.
