Our Pastor’s Letter
More Presentations
Thank you for the warm welcome that I received last
weekend. Having presented myself, I would also like
to present four others who will be spending some
time here with us.
Wilfred and Romi are two seminarians who will be
staying with us for one month. Both are studying for
the Archdiocese of Denver at the Redemptoris Mater
Seminary. Wilfred is from Africa and Romi is from
Colombia. Please also make them feel welcome and
feel free to invite them to get to know Boulder and
yourselves better.
Arriving next week will be Father Bill Breslin, who
was the pastor here for twelve years and who most
of you know very well. Father Bill has generously
agreed to help us out. He will stay for about two
months.
Before being assigned to Sacred Heart, I was
planning to accompany some youth from Colorado,
including some from our parish, to see the Pope at
World Youth Day in Poland. When I learned of my
assignment, at first I decided to cancel my trip as I
knew I would have just arrived at the parish. Father
Bill’s generosity enables me to go and so I am
grateful to him. I have no doubt that you will
welcome him back kindly.
I’ve asked Father José Aníbal Chicas, the new
parochial vicar, to share a few words:
“My name is Father José  Aníbal Chicas Guevara. I
was born and raised in the beautiful country of El
Salvador. I am the second child of seven and the
only boy in the family. Growing up I always had my
dream set to be a professional soccer player. Soccer
was my passion and I was certain I was going to
achieve that dream. Little did I know God had a
totally different plan for my life!
After I finished my college
studies, I entered the
university to study, even
though I knew my dream
was to be a soccer player.
At the age of 14, I had a
crisis in my life with many doubts. I did not
understand why I was the only boy in my family. That
brought many questions about God and about life,
so much so that I did not like to be in Church. In the
middle of that crisis I heard the call God made to me
calling me back to his Church.
I joined the Neocatechumenal Way and this reality
helped me to discover my vocation. I went to Rome
for a retreat and from there I was chosen to come to
Denver. It was God Himself choosing me to come to
a place where I never thought to come. I entered the
Redemptoris Mater Seminary, which forms Diocesan
Missionary Priests. I arrived to the seminary at the
end of 2002, and was ordained as priest by
Archbishop Samuel Aquila on May 18, 2013.
One of the parts in the formation is to do three years
of missionary work. My first year was in the Bronx,
NY; my second year was to work in the new chapel
of the seminary; and my last year was in Laredo,
TX. I haven’t ever been more certain in life and
know that my vocation is to be a priest and give my
life for the Gospel. As a priest I served one year at St
Clare of Assisi in Edwards CO, and two years at
Queen of Peace in Aurora.
I look forward to meeting each and every one of
you. May God bless all of you in this Sunday!”

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time — A Life of Joy and Mission
Isaiah 66:10–14c In the joy of the return to Jerusalem after a time of pain and exile the Lord’s power is manifested. The life
of faith is a life of victory, ultimately. This includes listening to and following Him. He is our God and we are His people.
Psalm 63:1–5, 7–8 This is hymn of joy for deliverance. Consider how the Lord has finally delivered you into joy after
difficulties. How could you pass this joy on?
Galatians 6:14–18 Even in death there is victory in God. We are a new people who cannot boast in our own power. Our
victory is given to us, as well as our life’s work to pursue. We have been called and in responding we are saved and have
our real success.
Gospel of Luke 9:18–24 Jesus sends each of us on mission to spread his message: The kingdom is close, touch it and be
changed. It seems an impossible request, to be lambs among wolves. But Jesus gives some advice for the journey – travel
light, do not get distracted, give peace and accept the peace back if it is rejected, and count on the generosity of those who
accept this good news. And the disciples return in great joy because of their success in turning back evil. But Jesus teaches
our greatest joy is in being called and accepted into the Kingdom of God.

MAS PRESENTACIONES
Gracias por la cálida bienvenida que me dieron la semana pasada. Después de
haberme presentado también me gustaría presentar otras cuatro personas que
van a pasar algún tiempo aquí con nosotros. Wilfred y Romi son dos
seminaristas que se alojarán con nosotros durante un mes. Ambos están
estudiando en la Arquidiócesis de Denver en el Seminario Redemptoris Mater.
Wilfred es de África y Romi es de Columbia. Por favor, también háganlos sentir bienvenidos y con
confianza invítenlos a conocer Boulder y a ustedes. La próxima semana llegará el Padre Bill Breslin, que
fue el pastor aquí por doce años y que la mayoría de ustedes conoce muy bien, ha accedido generosamente a
ayudarnos. Él permanecerá
durante unos dos meses. Antes de ser asignado al Sagrado Corazón, yo tenia
ya planes de acompañar a unos jóvenes de Colorado, entre ellos algunos de nuestra parroquia, para ver al
Papa en la JMJ en Polonia. Cuando supe de mi asignación, de momento decidí cancelar mi viaje, ya que
sabía que apenas acababa de llegar a la parroquia. La generosidad de Padre Bill, me permitirá realizar ese
viaje por lo que estoy agradecido con él. No tengo ninguna duda de que amablemente lo acogerán de nuevo.
Finalmente le pregunté P. José Aníbal Chicas, el nuevo vicario parroquial, compartir unas pocas palabras que
siguen:
"Mi nombre es P. José Aníbal Chicas Guevara . Nací y crecí en el hermoso país de El Salvador. Soy el
segundo niño de siete y el único varón en la familia. Al crecer, mi sueno era de ser un jugador de fútbol
profesional el fútbol era mi pasión y yo estaba seguro de que iba a lograr ese sueño. Poco sabía que Dios tenía
un plan totalmente diferente para mi vida. Después de haber terminado mis estudios de bachillerato, entré en
la Universidad para estudiar Arquitectura, a pesar de eso Yo sabía que mis sueños era ser un jugador de
fútbol. A la edad de 14 años tenía una crisis en mi vida con muchas dudas. No entendía por qué yo era el
único chico en mi familia. Esto trajo muchas preguntas acerca de Dios y acerca de la vida hasta el punto de
que no me gustaba estar en la Iglesia. En medio de esa crisis oí el llamado que Dios me hizo de nuevo a su
Iglesia. Me uní al Camino Neocatecumenal y esta realidad me ayudó a descubrir mi vocación. Fui a Roma
para un retiro y desde allí; Me eligieron venir a Denver. Yo no he elegido venir a Denver; fue Dios mismo
quien me eligió ir para llegar a un lugar donde nunca pensé que venir. Entré en el Seminario Redemptoris
Mater, que forma sacerdotes Misioneros Diocesanos. Llegué al seminario a finales de 2002 y fui ordenado
como sacerdote por el Arzobispo Samuel Aquila el 18 de mayo de 2013. Una de las partes en la formación es
hacer tres años de misión. Mi primer año fue en el Bronx NY, mi segundo año fue trabajar en la nueva capilla
del seminario y mi último año fue en Laredo TX. No he estado más seguro en la vida y saber que mi vocación
era la de ser sacerdote y dar mi vida por el Evangelio. Como sacerdote hice un año en Santa Clara de Asís en
Edwards CO, y dos años en Reina de la Paz en Aurora CO. Espero mas adelante en conocerlos a todos y cada
uno de ustedes. Que Dios los bendiga a todos ustedes en este Domingo! "

Sucedió que como se iban cumpliendo los días de su
asunción, él se afirmó en su voluntad de ir a Jerusalén, y
envió mensajeros delante de sí, que fueron y entraron en
un pueblo de samaritanos para prepararle posada; pero
no le recibieron porque tenía intención de ir a Jerusalén.
Al verlo sus discípulos Santiago y Juan, dijeron: «Señor,
¿quieres que digamos que baje fuego del cielo y los
consuma?» Pero volviéndose, les reprendió; y se fueron a
otro pueblo. Mientras iban caminando, uno le dijo: «Te
seguiré adondequiera que vayas.» Jesús le dijo: «Las
zorras tienen guaridas, y las aves del cielo nidos; pero el Hijo del hombre no tiene donde reclinar la
cabeza.» A otro dijo: «Sígueme.» El respondió: «Déjame ir primero a enterrar a mi padre.» Le
respondió: «Deja que los muertos entierren a sus muertos; tú vete a anunciar el Reino de
Dios.» También otro le dijo: «Te seguiré, Señor; pero déjame antes despedirme de los de mi casa.» Le
dijo Jesús: «Nadie que pone la mano en el arado y mira hacia atrás es apto para el Reino de Dios.»
